Mexican Murals - The Rapidly Changing Wall of La Casa Picnic

(Edited)

As I have discussed it in one of my earlier mural posts, some murals seem to last forever, while others get vandalized immediately. Well, it seems like there is also a third option: Murals that don't even have a chance to get vandalized, as they are changed so frequently. This is certainly the case of La Casa Picnic.

I have mentioned this enormous wall before, located on the edge of the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood, just across the massive intersection from the Condesa, or to be more exact, on the corner of Cto. Interior José Vasconcelos and Gob. José Maria Tornel. Back then it had a mural painted on it, advertising the a couple of NBA games that were played here in Mexico City. More interestingly, the image featured a number of peyote-inspired (or DMT, whichever) animals.

Since then the mural on the same wall had been changed at least twice. The two pictures I have captured are both commercial in nature, though this time I managed to identify the artists, and even found a couple of informative links on the paintings.

What's Your Crunch by Sofía Castellanos

Up until recently this much frequented corner was painted in various shades of blue, except for an exploding chocolate bar, presumably of the company sponsoring the art. The images in it range from an old movie camera, a tennis racquet, to a French horn and a bowl of ramen noodles, but also include paint brushes and a needle and a thread.

According to the artist, the idea was to capture people's imagination regarding their passion. What drives you, what inspires you, what is your... well, your Crunch? For Sofía Castellanos the answer is clear: to draw and paint images with her hands. All this information, by the way, comes straight from the very informative Picnic Media page.

17th Morelia International Film Festival by Alter Os

As I passed by this same corner only a week ago, I was greeted by a completely different mural. This abstract image had to have something to do with movies, judging from the roll of celluloid and the eye-balls surrounding it. And indeed it does: Drawing attention to the 17th Morelia International Film Festival, which will be held from October 18 - 27 in the capital of Michoacan, Omar Arias, better known as Alter Os included a top-down view of the dome of Morelia's cathedral. As for the eye-balls, he commented: "It's the mural that looks at you."

Once again, thanks to the a wonderful article in Picnic Media I could access all the info, and pass it on to you. In the future we can probably expect more great art on this highly visible corner of La Casa Picnic, most probably with identifiable artists, and cool background information.
