This November...

It's less than a year from now but the wait already seems so long... I'm not just talking about the upcoming presidential election in the United States of America, which could for the first time in recent history produce a POTUS who sets the first steps toward a saner, more just, more sustainable and more equitable future for our world; America could for the first time become that shining example for the rest of us to follow...

In that month however, something else will happen that I'm anticipating so eagerly I can hardly contain myself; the best science fiction novel I've ever read will be released as a film made by the best science fiction director of recent years. I'm talking about Dune of course, directed by Denis Villeneuve who also brought us some of the best science fiction movies in recent memory, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, as well as the Sicario. When I heard that someone was going to make a sequel to one of my sci-fi favorites of all time, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, I was skeptical at best and secretly angry at worst; how could one even think to match or even improve that classic? Well, Villeneuve proved me wrong and Blade Runner 2049 compensated for a lot of the bad feelings left by the botched Disney take on Star Wars.

Dune is a huge project to take on as Frank Herbert's novels excel at painting a very detailed world, filled with political intrigues, a rich history of what makes the Dune universe tick including the social, environmental, political, cultural, philosophical and religious themes that shape, and are shaped by many different factions, cultures, families and bloodlines; everything works together and weaves a narrative landscape that completely sucks in the reader and makes all the mythical and esoteric aspects of it thoroughly believable. This is a hard one to capture on the big screen and within the time restraints that are inherent in the medium; Villeneuve wisely decided to spread the story of just the first novel (there were 6 in the original series by Frank Herbert) over two feature length films. It is therefore crucial that the first one does well at the box-office, or we might never see it completed.

"The ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw. In a way, it’s Star Wars for adults."

There's not only the prospect of these two films directed by Villeneuve; he's also credited for directing at least the first pilot episode of the announced TV series Dune: The Sisterhood, which is set in the Dune universe and centers on the lives of the Bene Gesserit, the secretive sisterhood that influences all the noble houses and therefore the fate of humanity in the background. It looks like Dune is set to be born again, this time as a multi-media universe akin to the DC Comics and Marvel movie and TV franchises; if they can pull that off, we're in for a treat :-) Filming is done on the first movie and recently some footage was shown to a select audience; the first reactions that have appeared online have been nothing short of wildly positive, which only strengthens my believe that Villeneuve is the right man for this job. It's being described as a mix between The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars; if that doesn't excite you, you must not be a fan of sci-fi ;-) Just watch the below linked video; I hope that after watching it you'll be as giddy with eager anticipation as I am...

"I couldn’t imagine anyone more suited for the tone of the original Frank Herbert novels than Denis. There are some things that are - for lack of a better word - nightmarish about what you see... There’s just this kind of brutalist element to it. It’s shocking. It’s scary. It’s very visceral."
