Baby Proofing The Cot (Part 2)

(Edited)

I've got a lot going on right now.

I think it hit me today how many projects I've got at the moment.

The Inky Adventures, currently on pause because I need to figure out how to seal and varnish them. Same goes with the acrylic pours.

I'm still doing the orgonites, although I didn't have time to make any last weekend.

Then there's the candles..

And now sewing...

🤦🏻‍♀️

All this while I have a super clingy baby.

Test Sew

Before I go cutting up the materials for the cot bumpers I thought I better do some small sewing projects to warm up.

Textiles isn't my thing and going by past experience whatever I envisioned sewing had a 30% chance of working out.

I'm pretty sure that 30% dropped to 10% today....

so much hair...

Bella was born with a head full of hair and because of that at 8 months old we are faced with this dilemma ☝️.

Hubby suggested we shave it off 😱 I was totally against it, but it is getting harder to keep her hair out of her eyes every day. She's got elastic headbands but they're not wide enough to contain her hair so I've been considering other options.

One was the baby turban. Seemed easy enough on YouTube but after two fails (on account of the turban being way too small)

baby turban = fail

I gave up and cut a strip across a baby singlet which took 3 seconds to do and worked out heaps better than the turban.

Then hubby came home which gave me a bit more time to be ambitious.

Double sided, wider band with a curve that's looking like a face mask and finished off with an elastic to give it stretch.

double sided headband = fail

It was a horrible fail.

I didn't sew far enough in so when I turned it outside in I had huge gaps where I didn't sew the materials together and then the edges frayed.... 🤦🏻‍♀️ A lot went wrong... I chucked it..

Still determined, despite the time and the crying baby in the background, I cut myself a wide strip of fabric, sewed the edges together turned it inside out, measured it on Bella's head and when I got the length right I added the elastic.

It's not the cutest or fanciest headband on the planet but it did the trick.

Things I learned from today's mistakes were:

Taking accurate measurements is important.

Giving myself plenty of room along the edges is also important.

Planning it out is also very important.

Cot bumper materials

Now that I got re-acquainted with the sewing machine it's time to turn my attention to the cot.

I decided to go with foam underlay instead of the usual wadding because it's much thicker and I thought it would provide better protection.

Then I selected a cute flannelette.

Basically the idea is to make removable covers for the wadding this way everything can be washed and aired.

Measurements wise, the recommended mattress size is 1320mm x 700mm x 120mm. I'm thinking its pretty safe to base my measurements on that, give or take a few cms here and there. There are 11 bars which is a bit annoying since I was going to group them into twos ~ but I'll survive.

I'm hoping I'll have better luck with the sewing machine and that Bella let's me do some work tomorrow.

It is ritual in hinduism to shave off the first hair of baby...we call it "mundan"

That is a quality head of hair. If it was Summer I'd break out the clippers, but the extra warmth in Winter is worth the hassle. Gorgeous kid.

Lol theres heaps eh?! Good point about winter warmth 👌. Am now consolidating shaving it off, depending on when 👇 her mundan time is. If it'll be in Summer we just might do it. ❤ Thanks Uncle Matt!

I think your headbands are pretty cute XD Just make her little wrist sweatbands and she'll look like a little 80s athelete ;D

If you don't want to shave her her head just clip the fringe while she's distracted?

Good luck with the cot bumpers!

Isn't it a hard one when one's baby is full of lots of lovely hair? My daughter was the same but she had ash blonde hair. Your head bands are very creative and practical, I am very impressed at your persistence as it worked out in the end.
