Profiteering Off of Peoples Passivity

Hey Jesspassivists

Have you ever wondered why one of the most profitable industries in the world is entertainment? Why do we spend so much money on amusing ourselves as if we have this divine right for others to make us feel anything, laugh, cry, excitement, thrills? Entertainment comes in various shapes and sizes, music, sport, movies, documentaries, tv shows, books, podcasts, radio, audiobooks and live shows.

Our need to be entertained goes back thousands of years and has not changed, once we're fed, clothed and warm, we're looking to be stimulated by a third party and modern technology has taken this need and blown it up to extreme levels to turn insane profits.

Entertain us to death

Most people live lives of quiet desperation

If you're ever looking for an asset that is more scarce than gold or Bitcoin, then its will power. The modern human has very little, we can see that in obesity rates, addiction rates and the need for mindless entertainment and the cost of all these industries continues to rise and drive a healthy profit for those at the top.

Our lack of will power is how people sneak into our pockets and take what little we have and we willingly give it and think its a fair exchange. We're so desperate for a release from our existence but making positive change is too hard, long-winded and no guarantee so we stimulate it temporarily with a distraction from entertainment.

Give them bread and circus

As they said in ancient Rome, give them bread and circus and they will be obedient. Thousands of years later and advances in technology and we're still carrying this crutch around with us with kicking the habit having no end in sight.

Have you ever wondered why influencers, movie stars, musicians and other entertainers make so much money, one because they are filtered to the top to keep the "supply" short so we focus on what they give you and secondly because the market wants to be entertained, cheap thrills cost us billions in productive capital every year.

We would rather overpay Beyonce millions for another shitty album and keep it financially viable than spend capital on things that actually generate wealth and a better society.

When I see illogical decision making like this play out on a grand scale it can only be one of two things, fraud, or addiction and in some cases a combination of both. The society we have today is the way it is because we make it financially viable for people to post pictures of their asses online or react to other peoples content.

The level of stupidity and frivolousness knows no bounds when it comes to entertaining humans.

Have your say

What do you good people of HIVE think? Do you think we can kick the habit or manage it better?

So have at it my Jessies! If you don't have something to comment, comment "I am a Jessie."

We could replace bread with cips, to be more accurate lol. Passivity is terrible and some are making money out of it. I think it is people's fault. Entertainment supplies for a demand.

Lol give them chips and internet and they will remain forever docile and loyal. Yes, I also think its a two-way street yes people profit and create entertainment but if there wasn't continued demand that is profitable they would stop. I think when you become a consumer, you forget you're a citizen that has active duties and responsibilities and want to just be told what to do and what to consume at your expense while others enrich themselves on your passivity

Oh docile. How dreadful is that word. But I guess it goes well with the ideas.

I'm a firm believe in the power of the intolerant minority, if enough people stick to their values, they change the world! I see it happening with crypto and I think it should happen with a lot more parts of society

I agree. Always stand firm to protect what you believe in!

Indeed! What good are having values and ideals if you only want to hold them when they are not challenged? The “value” comes from knowing its worth fighting for; those that do are often remembered for their bravery! Be the next Shackleton

Yes. Spend money on entertainment. But instead of throwing that money away, buy Hive, stake it, and get a return on your entertainment investment.

I've been trying to point that out for years and how much a of a game changer it truly is; nobody gets it.

I've been saying that for sometime now, HIVE the Netflix subscription that gives back! Nobody gets it because we haven't reached the point of an intolerant minority same with Bitcoin. Once we reach a certain amount of users that's minds cannot be changed, the rest will just follow, we're not their yet but the social proof will come with the success stories from crypto projects

We'll have more active wallets than bitcoin on any given day once that entertainment money and the consumer finds its way here. I'm not too keen on the idea of alternate tokens; SMTs, whatever. I'd rather see all that money funnel into one token, creating constant demand, offsetting what creators can sell and inflation. Start creating smaller markets each with their own token and it becomes confusing for the consumer, many tokens fail, eventually losing their appeal. Those tokens are great for a big name though. A band, personality, things like that. I can't see it working well with individual communities unless that community had a market of millions already established.

Well we can see HIVE-engine tokens not doing all that well and I think SMT would be the same route but I get why people want it so they can change the distribution of their token without affecting the main chain!

To me I see it as experimenting at scale and seeing what works best that’s the only value I see in SMT in my understanding

Most of these early tokens and chains will die, thats without a doubt! I do like the idea of side chains with BTC as your collateral!

So the amount of BTC you have in your chain is your sort of peg and it limits your inflation! You’ll need more collateral to make more! I think it’s an idea worth exploring

The Hive-engine tokens were a great experiment, demonstrating the importance of the consumer spending money in all this, since that was the missing piece of the puzzle. Content is product and we're refusing to sell it. Much of the marketing and onboarding efforts over the years have always been directed towards creators. Creators naturally go where the money is though. The consumer needs to outnumber these creators. Go to Youtube, you see one video with tens of thousands of views. One book sells thousands of copies. Netflix made billions with subscriptions. Even sports knows there are more fans in the seats than players on the field. Yeah dude, I could talk about this for days. Those curation rewards and the fact the consumer can have their money back if they no longer want to subscribe aren't tough sells, they simply don't know yet. Enough rambling out of me though.

Their is certainly some entertainment that is more of an art and speaks to us in various ways, comedy and satire is probably one of the best so in those cases we can’t just lump them all together as mindless entertainment

I think it’s more than just Netflix it’s the content we read in books, magazines, the news, the quality of the educational material, the quality of the people we interact with, does it challenge us does it push as forward does it drive us to act or is it just their to keep us “busy” and take up hours

good stuff... hey apparently celsius can only be acquired on "Liquid, IDEX, Switcheo, and HitBTC."

which one of those do you use/recommend?

I don't use any of those exchanges, I just sent BTC from my wallet to their wallet and have been keeping it there ever since. If you want CEL tokens for the better interest rate you can buy them directly in the app with a credit card

ok, it seems like they were only allowing you to buy about 6 coins, not CEL, but I can recheck.

Wierd, I see 9 tokens available for purchase on my app with CEL being there

btc, eth, xrp, bch, ltc, and xlm .... maybe it's a country by country thing i guess

FYI: "CEL token cannot be currently purchased within the app if you are a US user, due to the laws and regulations. Alternatively, CEL token is listed on IDEX, Switcheo, HitBtc, Liquid and Totle exchanges, but I believe that Switcheo only provides services to US users.

US users can earn weekly compounded interest on their CEL balance in CEL tokens at the current rate of 5.12% APY and complete loan interest payments in CEL at a discounted rate of up to 30% less than paying in fiat or crypto."

Have any experience with Swithcheo? I may try

Ah makes sense you got that bitlicience bullshit in the US! Never used any of those exchanges, just check the order books because you don’t want to go buy and cause massive slippage which is notorious with these small exchanges and their low liquidity

Also happy to send you CEL if you like to do a P2P trade

The reply I began became so long it should be a post that continues the discussion. I'll be sure to mention you, provide a link to this one, quotes, and...

wait for it... I am going to post this when I am ready to leave some quotes of my own right here for the sake of continuity...

So, here's some thought for food in short:

The funny thing is, once you have power, power is also addictive. It becomes self-important. You become self-important. Delusional, although in other ways than Fictional Power users. Yet similar.

People give their freedoms and dreams away because they fear responsibility.

So we tend to entrust our well-being in the hands of others. Others are convenient to blame. Despite we know...

The Man Sold The World a long time ago.

Did he really have control, though?

Control is an illusion, as a Zen master would say. So, control the illusion, and don't let the illusion control you.

Its a case of if you never try you never have to fail or answer to your critical, we're paralysed by fear and because of it inaction thrives. Our brains make excellent servants but worse masters, the brain is not concerned with the action only the feeling so if you can stimulate the feeling of success by supporting a winning team you get the feeling of winning by association not by action

Yeah yeah yeah, now entertain me, I'll give you a $0.03 upvote for it and keep earning "consumer rewards" in the process... oh wait, what a great model we have here on Hive for that kinda stuff!

It's not even a subscription model here really. More like a consumption model which would probably be more appropriate!

Good to see you got a big payout on this one too, smashing it!

Lol plus you earn from giving me earnings, its a win for everyone! Ssssh don't let them find out about it just yet let me get to orca first, then everyone can run in and get their piece lol

Well, when used properly yes its an active consumption model, since you need to engage with the content and decided if its worth something whereas other things like YouTube the vast majority have no incentive to engage so they just passively consume

Lol, when you knock on the door enough times eventually they have to let you in right?

Ok ok, you need to trade all of that steem out and move it over with steem engine seeing as no exchanges seem to want to support that latest Hard fork though lol! Join #roadtoorca baby!

Yeah I think the vast majority probably think it's too good to be true but you can actually earn through posting/commenting and grow your account that way too. Sure, it takes a while, I think I have about 5,500 HP from post/comment rewards in the 2 and a bit years I've been here so if you stick at it and buy enough Hive, you can get a side income just by actively consuming content on the Hive model... game changing hey!

Haha, either that or you've bashed so much there isn't a door left any more 😃

Lol part of me still wants to see what Tron has planned and to milk it slowly, it’s the slow knife;the one that takes its time to settle between the bones that cuts deepest

You’re probably right and it does have certain Ponzi scheme elements to it like most people see crypto so I don’t blame them! If they do get here I’ll welcome them all the same! My goal is to have the account that I used to be envious of like how the hell does this guy have 50k HIVE how????? Back when it was like 3 bucks

Lol I’ll keep trying perhaps I’ll find the magic formula I see some people have! That or I need to start showing my dick on onlyfans and then using that cash to buy HIVE

Haha, good luck with the Tronsteem coin. I might just keep 1k in but I've removed all my profile posts now and my profile is self-nuked 😃

Yeah the Ponzi element is kinda always there because if enough people get involved with it then us early users will definitely feel the benefit but there's no reason why we can't distribute these tokens out to new users and welcome them aboard to squash any doubts. I'm with you on the 50k Hive haha! Remember when I was starting out and seeing people with 1,000 and being like Woooooah, this guy has the cojones 😃

LOL there's always that onlyfans option as a last resort! #dick4hive 😂

Lol Justin’s greed will be my pay day or so I hope! I’m already well up from what I bought with my HIVE airdrop and earnings so Fuckit YOLO

I’ve been meaning to NUKE my profile but I’m still getting referral traffic from it to my own site so lol I’m kinda watching that first

Lol most of those people who were creators that earned cashed out and left can’t wait for them to come back and beg for upvotes so I can be like look whose a big dick now

Oh defs I want to be one of those nice orcas that people like and dish out upvotes, tips and tokens and have them under my wing and show them the way

Have you seen the new referral reprogram too? I think in this next bulk run with that we can make some serious coin! Like literally just post a pic of your HIVE wallet on Instagram with a link in bio and boom refferals money

Haha, will keep my fingers crossed and I'm also up an unreal amount with the HIVE airdrop which was an awesome bonus. I'm up with the Steem purchases too for the time being. Bought around 1500-1800 Sats so if those damn exchanges open up so I can get out without my funds being moved away then happy days really! Managed to get out about 0.3 BTC out before STEEM's HF23 happened, now I guess I'll be loading up on Hive - put a couple of k HP across and slowly but surely getting there!

Yeah we'll be well positioned on Hive I reckon, those content creators can have Steem, not interested in that any more - can't see any other path for it other than to be ported to Tron. We'll also have our Blurt tokens don't forget!

I did see that referral program, might be worth looking in to for sure, it's that hiveonboarding account right?

Computer gaming is notorious. Develop Hand Eye Coordination, problem solving skills sure but it wastes so much time, in itself addictive and unproductive. (Just look at my kid's room)

I think it’s also dependent on how you use it, I agree as someone who games causally most of it is a waste of time and entertainment and should be done in moderation! You should also have a healthy interest in other things outside gaming.

Eventually the game does end and you have to go out their in that blue planet called earth and play the game of life
