Market Friday: window shopping around Siam Center during the New Year holiday, เดินเล่นแถวสยามก่อนปีใหม่

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the lovely and generous @dswigle. During the long New Year holiday, I took the opportunity to go window shopping around Siam Square in which all stores have been beautifully decorated for the holiday season. The best way to get there is by skytrain; the nearest station is Siam or one could get off at Chidlom station and walk all the way to Siam area on skywalk.

There were people everywhere inside the shopping are in Siam Center and around the connecting area in front of Siam Paragon. In fact, Siam Paragon used to be the biggest and most luxurious shopping mall until IconSiam was opened to shoppers last year. However, all the expensive brand names and famous restaurants are still to be found in Siam Paragon. I rarely visit these places because of the traffic jam and overly expensive prices. But it was worth my time to go inspecting the colourful decorations during my long holiday. The lighting at the water fountain was very nice although the scale seemed so much smaller than at IconSiam.

There was a big crowd in front of Siam Paragon so I had to take my survey. It’s funny how I felt like an outsider in a transparent bubble looking at all these people and surroundings. I could feel their excitement and enjoyment in this colourful though crowded space. They all wanted to take their selfies with the lighted castle backdrop and the tunnel of lights.

I am afraid I am a stranger to the modern Thai culture as most people seem to be very Westernised and materialistic. Most have forgotten or ignored the old way of the middle path principles and basic Buddhist values. All the entertainment and bombardment of main stream media including social media have turned our society into ‘society of facing down’ (to mobile phones). The concepts of awareness and mindfulness have become difficult and useless to be bothered with. People seem to be lost in emotional consumerism and entertainment. The really spiritual side of living seems to slowly fade into the back of consciousness. Observing these people makes me wonder if they have ever thought about preparations for a reset in the global financial situation in the future. Sometimes ignorance is bliss as no matter what will happen, we have no control over it!

I had a short-cut walk through Siam Paragon and was so surprised by the number of people there. Lots of tourists and local Thais were taking selfies; this has been a new phenomenon in Thai culture. In the past, Thais were too timid and shy to have their photos taken. Now they have all become extrovert and obsessive with mobile phones. Their lives’ meanings are dependent on mobile phones and social media. Mobile phones seem to become an important source of happiness and gratifications. Today, Thais hardly read long analytical articles or do their own research. I am afraid very few people have heard about cryptocurrency or Bitcoins.

ตอนหยุดยาวช่วงปีใหม่ เราได้ไปเดินสำรวจห้างใหญ่ที่มีการลงทุนตกแต่งหน้าห้างอย่างสวยงาม เราก็ไปเดินแถวสยามเซ็นเตอร์และสยามพารากอน เราแค่เดินผ่านชั้นล่างไปทางสยามพารากอน นํ้าพุที่บริเวณหน้าสยมาพารากอนกลายเป็นเหมือนน้ำพุของเด็กเล่น เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับที่ไอคอนสยาม คนส่วนใหญ่ดูตื่นเต้นกับการถ่ายรูปเซลฟี่ และการเดินผ่านอุโมงค์ที่มีแสงไฟระยิบระยับ การตกแต่งสถานที่และการที่มีคนมาถ่ายรูปกันด้วยมือถือ ทำให้เราเห็นได้ชัดเจนว่า เดี๋ยวนี้คนไทยและวัฒนธรรมไทย เริ่มเปลี่ยนไปตามแบบทางตะวันตกมากขึ้นทุกปี

เราเดินสำรวจบรรยากาศ และดูผู้คนมากมายราวกับว่า เราเป็นคนแปลกหน้าที่มาเก็บข้อมูลในสังคมของมนุษย์ เราไม่รู้สึกหรือคิดเหมือนคนทั่วไปเลย เรามองว่าคนส่วนใหญ่กำลังถูกครอบงำโดยสื่อกระแสกลัก และสื่อออนไลน์ ทำให้เขาไม่คิดเอง หรือหาข้อมูลเพื่มเติม่ คนไทยไม่เหมือนสมัยก่อนที่มีความขี้อายและไม่ค่อยกล้าถ่ายรูปตนเอง คนไทยกลายเป็นคนที่กล้าแสดงออก และชอบถ่ายรูปตนเองเพื่อแชร์ในโซเชียลมีเดีย เราก็อดใจกายไม่ได้ว่า คนส่วนใหญ่กำลังเสพสุข และใช้ชีวิตหาความสุขสนุกสนานไปเรื่อยๆ โดยเขาไม่ได้เตรียมตัวกับสิ่งที่ไม่คาดคิดในอนาคต เช่น การล่มสลายของระบบการเงินทั่วโลก การรีเซททางการเงินเป็น สิ่งที่นักวิเคราะห์ชั้นนำหลายคนได้พูดถึงไว้ว่าต้องเกิดขึ้นแน่นอน

Inside Siam Paragon, I saw two big shops with queuing systems in front of these shops. I was amazed to see people wanting to spend exorbitant amount of money for prestigious brand names.

เราเดินผ่านสยามพารกอนเพื่อไปทะลุออกสถานีรถไฟฟ้าสยาม แต่ก็ค้อวแปลกใจมากกับการที่ ร้านใหญ่สองแห่งมีคนเข้าคิวเพื่อรอเข้าไปเลือกซื้อสินค้า เรางงที่คนบางคนพร้อมที่จะจ่ายเงินจำนวนมากเพื่อยี่ห้อสินค้า

Life is like a coin with two sides or a Taoist symbol of black and white on a circle. There is a black spot on white and a white spot on black, creating a dynamic spinning of life. I have gathered lots of food for thoughts during my window shopping. Life goes on and there will naturally be a gap between ‘what is’ and ‘what should be’. The traffic jam outside the shopping center was the reality telling me to hurry on to my next destination.

เราเดินสำรวจความเป็นไปของสังคมไทย ที่เหมือนเหรียญสองด้านที่มีความแตกต่างตรงกันข้าม เราจึงต้องมีสติในการดำรงชีวิต และอยู่กับความเป็นจริง การจราจรติดจัดที่ถนนเป็นความจริงของชีวิต ที่บอกให้เราสีบเดินทางไปยังจุดหมายต่อไปโดยรถไฟฟ้า
