Market Friday: rushing to the bakery

This is my #marketfriday post, a popular tag hosted by our kind and generous @dswigle. This week has been a very busy week with lots of emotional ups and downs as the crypto world seemed to be in turmoil with Bitcoin dipping to under 50K while ETH went up to all time high and got smacked down. Luckily I had too many things to keep me busy so I just had to ride the waves and use my sixth sense to steer me through this confusing time. The morning started off with bright strong sunshine so I knew it’s going to very very hot. I had to rush out to collect my bakery at the oldest bakery shop in New Road, near Robinson Mall in Bangrak district. I had to take the local minibus which took about forty minutes to arrive at the nearest stop so I could walk another five minutes to reach the bakery shop.

I took photos from the minibus whose driver seem to think he was riding in a horse race. It has been quite a bumpy ride. The roads were strangely empty of the usual busy traffic. The spread of cases of coronavirus and the official daily news Including the mainstream media have been fueling a sense of fear and panic among people. It was the first time I saw people wearing two masks at the same time. They had no idea that it would be very detrimental for the health in the long run. The increase acidity in the blood would increase the chance of encouraging the spread of cancer cells. There would also be some neurological problems for some people. Most Thai people couldn’t use English as a second language and out education system has been designed to make people lacking critical thinking. The economy would be badly affected by this widespread self-imposed lockdown. I saw the first outcry from the small and medium enterprise group for governmental assistance. I could see small or ordinary people trying their best to get the system floating above the water.

Many street food stalls have been in operation making daily life possible for other hard working people. I do admire their patience and perseverance amidst frightening uncertainty of the future.

The red minibus bounced along the narrow lanes which ran parallel to the main road but it had it turned into the busy Sathorn road. This road is flanked by skyscrapers, condominiums, foreign financial banks and companies. I did manage to take some photos of the preserver old neocolonial building and the entrance of the embassy of the Vatican. There are several foreign embassies along both sides of Sathorn road.

The bus stopped in a narrow lane leading towards Sathorn Pier. I had to get off at this stop and walked about five minutes to reach the Panlee bakery. The sunshine was gloriously hot which meant that all kinds of coronavirus would be vaporised by the strong UVC ray. I made certain that I would get my dairy dose of vitamin D from my trip. The local street food looked so good and reasonably priced that I almost stopped for some quick lunch. But there were queues waiting for taking home at all the famous eateries. The bright sunlight made take photos rather difficult as I could not adjust the aperture of my iPhone. At least the sky was clear blue and the air was very warm.

I arrived at the bakery and asked about my order; I did phone the shop up to place my order earlier. It’s advisable to place an order by phone as most of the delicious items get sold out very fast. This bakery was a recently discovery for me at the beginning of this year when an old senior friend came along for a walking tour with me. The modernised shop did not convey anything special about this place. Only when I tasted some cakes and bakery, did I realise that this shop is really quite good. Furthermore, the size of each item is not too small or too big; the prices are much cheaper than most modern bakeries. I went to collect my box of sorted buns for my journey to the north. The whole box would last me a few days.

The owner of the bakery is in her late eighties; this business has been in her family for almost a hundred years. Her ancestors were making their living after New Road was opened for public transportation. There is also a coffee shop with seating area on the upper floor of this bakery. I would have loved to try their coffee one day when I had more leisure time.

On the way back to the bus stop, I was so hungry that I had to stop for a quick vegetarian snack. It’s called Chinese steamed noodles which is topped up with three kinds of mushrooms, steamed diced tofu and bean sprouts in soya sauce. The portion was rather small for the price and there should be more mushrooms. However this was enough to get me back home for my own snack. I was glad I got all the stuffed buns for my weekend.

ช่วงสัปดาห์นี้ราคาเงินเหรียญคริปโตมีความผันผวนหนักมาก เราก็มีภาระกิจมากมายต้องเก็บให้ทันเวลา จึงไม่ได้ติดตามเรื่องคริปโตอย่างจริงจัง เรามีสะสมน้อยมากจึงคิดว่าถือยาวไปเรื่อยจะดีกว่า รอเวลาที่เหมาะสมก่อนจึงค่อยดำเนินการต่อไป เราเปลี่ยนร้านซื้อขนมปังใหม่ เป็นร้านเก่าแก่ที่บางรักตรงถนนเจริญกรุง ไม่ไกลจากห้างโรบินสันมากนัก ร้านนี้เป็นร้านที่เพื่อนรุ่นพี่เราแนะนำให้รู้จักตอนที่เราพาเจาไปเดินทัวร์แถวบางรัก ตอนแรกเราไม่สนใจร้านนี้เลย เพราะการตกแต่งร้านเป็นแบบสมัยใหม่ ไม่มีเอกลักษณ์ที่สะดุดตาเลย แต่พอเราได้ชิมขนมที่ร้านนี้ เรารู้ว่าเขามีฝีมือดีทีเดียว ราคาก็ไม่แพงและขนาดของขนมแต่ละชิ้นก็กำลังดี เราจึงโทรไปสั่งขนมปังใส่ไส้หลายๆอย่างเพื่อเอาไปกินที่ต่างจังหวัด เราก็เดินทางด้วยรถสองแถวเพื่อไปเดินออกกำลังกาย เดินตากแดดด้วย

รถสองแถววิ่งไปตามตรอกแคบๆ ทำให้เราได้เห็นสภาพบ้านเรือนในสมัยก่อน และเห็นการใช้ชีวิตของผู้คนทั่วไป ร้านอาหารตามสั่งที่เปิดบริการคนที่ต้องทำงานทุกวัน สภาพถนนที่เงียบเหงาและคนเดินตามถนนที่บางตา เราถ่ายรูปไว้เตือนใจตนเอง เราคิดว่าครั้งนี้ธุรกิจจะโดนโคโรนาไวรัสทำให้มีอาการสาหัสมากกว่าเดิมอีก คนถูกกล่อมให้กลัวโดยการตามข่าวรายวันในสื่อกระแสหลัก และคนไทยส่วนใหญ่ไม่มีความรู้ภาษาอังกฤษมากนัก ทำให้ไม่สามารถเข้าถึงข่าวและข้อมูลที่แย้งกับที่เราถูกบอกให้เชื่อได้เลย เราคิดว่าอีกสักสองปีความจริงจะเริ่มออกมาในที่แจ้ง แต่กว่าจะถึงวันนั้นคนคงถูกชักชวนให้ถึงความตายและความวิบัติมากมายทีเดียว เราก็ได้แต่ติดตามความเป็นไปต่อไป จะดูว่าคนไทยจะช่วยต่างชาติลดจำนวนประชากรได้มากเพียงใด และช่วยเปลี่ยนโครงสร้างทางเศรษฐกิจเพื่อเอื้อทุนต่างชาติได้มากขนาดไหน

รถสองแถววิ่งแบบไม่เกรงใจคนอื่นนัก แต่เหมาะสำหรับการดูวิวและสัมผัสชีวิตคนทั่วไปที่ต้องทำงานหนักและต้องประหยัดเงินด้วย รถพาไปตามตรอกแล้วทะลุออกมาที่ถนนใหญ่ คือถนนสาทรซึ่งมีการจราจรที่คับคั่ง มีคอนโด โรงแรม ธนาคารต่างชาติ และสถานฑูตหลายแห่ง เราถ่ายรูปบ้านเก่าที่ยังเก็บไว้ให้คนรุ่นหลังได้เห็น แต่ที่น่าสนใจคือประตูทางเข้าของวาติกัน รถไปหยุดที่ตรอกทางเข้าไปที่ท่าน้ำสาทร เราก็ลงที่นั่นแล้วเดินต่อไปอีกห้านาที ก็ถึงร้านปั้นหลี ที่ทีอายุมาประมาณแปดสิบปีกว่า เจ้าของร้านอายุแปดสิบกว่าปีและ ธุรกิจนี้อยู่ในครอบครัวมาตั้งแต่สมัยปู่ย่า ร้านขายขนมปังนี้จึงเป็นร้านที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดบนถนนเจริญกรุง เขามีร้านกาแฟอยู่ด้านบน แต่เราไม่มีเวลามานั่งจิบกาแฟเลย แต่เราอยากมาลองชิมกาแฟร้านนี้สักวันหนึ่ง

ขนมปังใส่ไส้ให้เลือกหลากหลายมาก ขนมก็ชิ้นกำลังดี ไม่เล็กไม่ใหญ่เกินไป ทำให้กินได้ครั้งละสองชิ้นสบายๆ ราคาชิ้นหนึ่งไม่ถึงยี่สิบบาท เราได้โทรศัพท์ไปสั่งขนมไว้กล่องหนึ่ง เพราะเรากลัวว่าของที่เราชอบกินจะขายหมดเสียก่อน เราโชคดีที่ได้เกือบทุกอย่างที่ต้องการ เราจะเอาไปกินที่ต่างจังหวัด เรามีขนมกินอร่อยๆสามวันแล้วสบายๆ

ตอนเดินไปที่ป้ายรถเมล์เราเก็นร้านขายอาหารริมทางหลายร้าน ทำให้เราเริ่มหิวจึงตัดสินใจกินก๋วยเตี๋ยวหลอดมังสวิรัติหนึ่งจาน แต่คนขายให้เห็ดและเต้าหู้น้อยไปสำหรับราคาสี่สิบบาท เรากลับมาบ้านมากินของว่างต่อ แล้วค่อยลุยงานที่ค้างไว้ต่อไป เราถ่ายรูปถนนที่เงียบเหงาตามทางไว้เป็นภาพประวัติศาสตร์ เราก็ไม่รู้ว่าจะมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอะไรที่น่าตกใจในอนาคต เราคิดว่าคนส่วนใหญ่คงคิดไม่ถึงว่าสิ่งต่างๆที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น เรื่องสำคัญๆเป็นผลจากการวางแผนของกลุ่มทุนข้ามชาติกลุ่มใหญ่มาก ที่กำลังคุมอาหาร ยา เศรษฐกิจ และการเมืองทั้งโลก
