Market Friday: a new creative district in Bangkok, แหล่งชุมชนงานศิลป์ในกรุงเทพฯ

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the wonderful and generous @dswigle. Last week as I was searching for some silver traders, I stumbled on a group of young artists and photographers. So, I followed them along the alley, I found myself in a new creative district which was only five minutes’ walk from the Grand Postal Office. These renovated old warehouses have been transformed into an artistic and creative center for gathering young artists and creative people into a community to exchange ideas and help each other in their artistic endeavours. This place is called Warehouse 30

It seemed the these photographers were doing a special portrait project as I could see several pretty models and lots of expensive cameras with heavy lenses.

They were using Warehouse 30 as their meeting place and photography project. Warehouse 30 was initiated by a famous Thai architect called Duangrit Bunnag who transformed a row of old warehouses of 4,000 square meters into artistic places for locally designers’ clothes and crafts, galleries, theatres, restaurants and hostels. He did preserve all the old wooden and metal structures of the warehouses with the concept of as little interference as possible to the original design. The results are quite stunning and thought provoking to me. There was an exhibition going on in one of the galleries; so I had a look at some painting by Thai artists.

Some of the rooms were still under renovation and there was some building work inside. I met an artist who could speak Thai and he was doing some work for his art exhibition in July.

Yup! But I need to have long lenses! iPhone doesn’t work well for portrait.

Life must be tough for Thai people without "Bunnag" surname, model like features (luk kreung) or exceptional talent.

Yup! These are gifted people. Luckily we had so many talented people and exceptional people in the past.

Art Districts are always fun to peruse and you just never know what you will see! You really lucked out when it came to this one. Especially stumbling upon artists/photographers in the making.

I am so happy to see that they kept the architecture that is unique to Thailand intact, and renovated to its former beauty. The last few pictures of the (the third to last in particular) show off a stunning place to show off the art. I really thought the pieces were thought-provoking and politically charged. :)

A wonderful opportunity to show off the district, have a #MarketFriday, and give us a sample of how photographers work.It was a great blog and I am so happy you took the time to do it!

Thanks for joining! I appreciate the love and support you are giving to #MarketFriday! Without you and people like yourself, I wouldn't be able to have such a successful challenge! I know that it is one of those challenges that take a lot of time and effort to be part of, so it means a lot to me that you participate. Thank you again for being a part of all this and I hope that you will, indeed, have a great day and week ahead! If you or any of your friends are in doubt about how to participate, this should clear it all up!

Thank you so much for your tip and kind attention. Yep! Modern young artists are mostly very strong headed politically. I do prefer the older traditional artists to those younger artists who are mostly too influenced by Western style paintings and schools of thoughts.

I was quite lucky to be in the middle of this group of photographers. They couldn’t quite make it why I was the only one with iPhone camera! LoL

It was fun watching these budding art students and photographers hard at work.

Have a wonderful working week.

Cheers.

Bkk is cool because you can go for a walk and find yourself in a new super interesting place like this. I do like the art. Here in Phuket we have quite a few art galleries in town. I'm curious about the set up there. Do the artists need to pay to use the space? Is there any support for poorer struggling artists? Thanks for the post. Very interesting. I've been planning on doing a post on some of the galleries nearby my house here.
