Scottish Highland Games for Market Friday

Scotish Highland Games are one of the most popular events in Scotland that usually take place anytime from May to September. Any country with Scottish connections will have their own, so if you don't, you might not want to miss them. I have been attending the ones here, in the almost local area for a few years now and I have to say, they are a definite must-do! A truly cultural event that the whole family can attend.

text16.png

I love the friendly competitions, including drumming and highland dancing, and of course the piping. It wouldn't be complete without the famous tossing the caber or throwing the hammer. Oh! I forgot about the fun tug of war. Not for the weak. There is no mercy. I am looking forward to this years already. Next year, possibly in Scotland.

The sport of caber toss originated in the Scottish Highlands. The Gaelic word cabar or kaber means “rafter” or “beam,” and during military campaigns, such large beams were tossed across often ice-cold streams to provide a temporary bridge for soldiers. source

The Caber is a tree, cut and trimmed so that one end is slightly wider than the other. It can be anywhere from 16 to 22 feet and between 100 to 180 pounds. The smaller end is rounded off so it will be easy to cup in the thrower's hands. I suppose you have to see this to believe it.

Fiddle competitions are an important part of traditional Schottish music. Open Competition. Most played by ear. All were amazing. A father/daughter duo to start the competition off.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share markets from across the globe. Different and varied as the countries themselves, I always look forward to seeing what you send me. Come. Sit down. Relax. Enjoy the shortest trip around the world you ever experienced, perhaps taking in a market from somewhere you have never been, seeing something you may have never seen.

Highland dancing socks are like knitted tartan, they choose a color from their kilt and then they knit them in a diamond pattern with white yarn.

Highland Games 2.jpg

Oh, yes! Of course, it is all about the kilts! Who doesn't love a kilt? "Highland dress and the tartan are among the most powerful, romantic and dramatic of all the symbols of Scotland." It has been claimed that "a man in a kilt is a man and a half"; Oh, for sure! You don't have to talk me into that one.

Le sigh.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. It helps you and me to have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

Highland Games 3.jpg

The uniforms are swoon-worthy. Typical Scottish Officer. The sporran, or purse, may be made of leather for day wear; the head and skin of the badger, seal, and ermine skins are worn for evening,

image.png

Highland Division was rated by the Germans as the most formidable of all the formations they came across during the First World War. Certainly, the British government had no doubts on the matter when, after the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie, they banned the use of Highland dress and the tartan, which they clearly saw as an incitement to further subversion. Offenders were killed or sent to the colonies. The form of Highland dress has always owed much to the army and it was the Highland regiments which kept the kilt and the tartan alive until at last, in 1782, their use was once more permitted. Before that time, Scots were only permitted to wear any Scottish wear if they joined the British Armed Services. Pipers were permitted to wear their kilt, but usually in a Regimental color. Other servicemen - most were permitted to wear the balmoral with their clan badge on it. A high price to pay to wear highland clothes, laying their life on the line to do it. source

1265348_10151882269618832_1749949375_o.jpg

Yes. When he isn't fiddling or playing the bagpipes, he is knitting his own socks.

1263042_10151882294383832_346172213_o.jpg

Everything you need to keep your kilt-wear up-to-date, you can find here. The shopping was awesome and the prices were fair.

I got to take a fencing class while there, all included in the price of admission.I am trying to decide if it is an advantage or disadvantage to be wearing a kilt while fencing

Youngest fiddle competitor.

1269704_10151882272718832_2037988090_o.jpg

There were very well-trained herding dogs there. I was impressed with the relationship of the dog and the handler, the obedience involved. When a dog is trained properly he can move the sheep just about anywhere. They can control the sheep in a very cool, calm manner. This little Border Collie would drop to the ground in a New York minute if he was told to do so. So impressive.

1274493_10151882290138832_2011922781_o.jpg

They played all day. Somewhere on the grounds. It was heaven.

Bagpipes are a class of musical instrument, using enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. Though the Scottish Great Highland Bagpipe and Irish uilleann pipes have the greatest international visibility, bagpipes have been played for centuries throughout large parts of Europe, the Caucasus, around the Persian Gulf and in Northern Africa. The term "bagpipe" is equally correct in the singular or plural, although in the English language, pipers most commonly talk of "the pipes" or "a set of pipes". source

Perfectly Tartan.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:

2. Take pictures! Be creative (or not)
3. Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
4. Post the picture(s)
5. Don’t forget to hashtag it! #MarketFriday by @dswigle
6. Drop the link to your post here so I can easily find them

It is always interesting to see the different markets around the globe! C’mon! Show me your market shots! I eagerly await them!

I had a most wonderful day, as I always do at these Highland Games. If you have any in your area, I encourage you to go, there are plenty of booths to shop at, food to be had and demonstrations all day long. It was educational and fun. You can't beat that. I am all ready for next year!

And just like that, this post is over! I want to thank you for visiting #MarketFriday! The support has been amazing and I cannot tell you how good that makes me feel. Thank you, always!
Love, Denise

i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

I would have loved to hear those fiddlers... those guys are pretty damn awesome, even if they technique is somewhat unconventional at times!

The fiddlers and the competition were the best! So were the dancers! Their technique is anything by conventional, for sure, but, somehow, they make it work for them! I love the Highland Games and go every year.

Talk about unconventional. The hard rocker with the bagpipes! Sweet!!!

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

I am always amazed to see them too the caber! I was totally in awe at how far they could toss it and the disappointment could be heard all the way back in Scotland when they stumbled or dropped it too soon. They are a fun visit and they always have something going on.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving me all those tokens! :)

That is an interesting question, Ace! @ace108

When I go to Venice, Italy, I am not allowed in the churches unless I have a dress on and my shoulders covered. I have to guess that they may hold to their beliefs.

Definitely gets the Scottish drop of blood or two going over here still Denise, we have annual Highland Gathering with pipe bands and dancers competing from all around the country in April every year. Funds raised by Round Table for charities. https://southcoastsun.co.za/137126/excitement-mounts-54th-highland-gathering/

Highland Games have recently been re-introduced with the first event happening during October last year, perhaps one day they will marry the two together again. it too is a fund raising event. https://southcoastsun.co.za/150977/don-yer-kilts-amanzimtoti-highland-games/

Durban Military Tattoo is another event in July holidays that is exceptionally popular with strong pipe band presence normally https://www.travelground.com/attractions/kzn-military-tattoo

Have attended 1st and 3rd over the years, not recently I must be honest so thoroughly enjoyed seeing your very traditional affair where you live.

How awesome to use them as fundraisers, Joan. We always get a big crowd at these events, so putting them together is sure to be a win.

A Tattoo is an event that I haven't been to in years! My dad loved it. I was so happy to hear how many people have been to one and will be going back to the Highland Games. I think this exactly the kind of fun that we need to be having, instead of our youth sticking their noses on cell phones or other devices.

It used to be they were on the phone too much, not they opt not to even talk but to text or surf!!! Thanks fo much for taking the time to stop by and say hello and I'll check out those links! Thank you!

Yes, it seems that we have a spring too early, I think winter has not said the last word.
Even though I don't have time to comment (I'm kind of a curator and that's been around me almost all this month. I feel like I stumbled upon something here, in Steemit, and I'm trying to recover. I don't think I'll succeed, I'm like a losing bet and that's why I bet more and more, losing more and more. I bet in a period, not large amounts but I went through this experience.) ... I look at your posts and I admire, first of all (as I do children), your wonderful photos.
I'm glad to see that you post almost daily, that makes me think you're good and still feel fun doing it.

Thank you! The games were a lot of fun and it was really something I always look forward to. No matter how many times you go, the outcome is different, even the way they do the herding of the sheep. The terrain makes a huge difference too. They always have it out a bit and on one of the farms, so there is plenty of land and there is lots of room to spread.

Ha! The hurdy-gurdy! Yes. I do love the bagpipes and at one time, Sarah was going to take lessons in one as she was really interested, but, a move prevented her from taking it up with a reliable Scot so the plans were dashed. But, I still love the sound. We used to have a neighbor down the street that played one and he practiced late at night. It was hauntingly beautiful and very melodramatic sounding drifting into the darkness.

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words and dropping your link. It is always and forever appreciated by me. Have a great week!

Oh! How cool is that! I love Scottish traditions and I am German and French. LOL But, I can be Scottish for a day, right?

Thank you for letting me know you liked the post. Sometimes, I think I shouldn't post something and then end up doing it and it gets more hits than usual. I guess I am a terrible judge of things. LOL

Oh, Outlander. Great timing! Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

Oh, thank you so much. It was such a fun event and even though the shots were not the best, I was having a great time. Sometimes it is better to live in the moment than to sit and take pictures all day, and that is what I did. Although I managed a few. :)

I hope you do get to go! The music, the people, the kilts! Oh, the vibe was delicious! Thanks for stopping by and saying hello! Have a great week!

I always knew Scottish men wore kilts, but in the photo if the fiddlers, both the woman and the man have them. So, was the kilt the thing that all Scots wore on their bottom half, male and female?

I love the shot of the border collie herding. I watched a video a while back about how we came to have the different dog breeds, and in one segment they highlighted some herding dogs that would go by command up into the mountain ranges where the sheep or goats would go and bring them down. It was an incredible sight to see!

A wonderful Friday market post as always!

“Female highland dress includes women's shoes, also called ghillies, that are tied in the same way but have thin soles for indoor wear and dancing. Traditionally, women and girls do not wear kilts but may wear ankle-length tartan skirts. A tartan sash or shawl may also be worn.

The bottom line on the kilt? There is only one kind of kilt, be it a man or woman wearing it, it is still a kilt. You know how we love to break tradition. When traveling, many Scots wear their kilts on formal nights or for dinner. The women have always worn ankle-length tartan skirts. I have no idea if it is us here in the States that are breaking tradition or it is common nowadays. Here they were, leaving the event. Notice the all the men have socks on. :)

Thanks for straightening that out for me. I had never really thought about it until I read your post. So the girls have brought the hem lines up from the ankle to just below the knee. By any chance did that happen around the time mini-skirts first were in vogue? ;)

Yes I do see all the socks, and I notice that the guy on the left's kilt is very pleated, and it looks the the lady on the right has some pleating, but the others in the picture don't appear pleated. Is there a reason for this too?

0

0.000
avatar

Actually, the others are pleated, but not in the same manner and most of the pleating is up front, I believe. The newer trend of short kilts is newer than that, but, these games are the only time I really see them. When I see them at a formal dining affair or a public event where the dress is formal, they are in the traditional, ankle-length tartan.

Kilts can be pleated either to the sett, so that the tartan pattern is preserved in the pleating, or else to the stripe so that the same vertical line is centered on each pleat. Traditionally civilian kilts were pleated to the sett, and military to the stripe. But ultimately it is a matter of taste.

You wouldn't believe the yardage used to make this happen!

You really got a lot of the photos of the Scottish man in action .. ha ha
It's really nice that some cultures are still in practice and maintain from generations to generations.
It's always so worrying that the younger generations may not remember and continue on these culture.
Yearly activities such as there are a good chance to remind them.

0

avatar

Haha! There are many more traditions in Scotland that keep the kilts on. They still wear them, in fact. So, it is not a matter of maintaining for them. It is still in use.

I do worry about some of our youth and the different cultures. Even Americans. We have living history museums so they can learn how to make soap and spin thread and all the things our pioneer people did. Lest this go into oblivion, never to be retrieved. You are right.

I love that they do this and I will be going next year again! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

Oh, yes!! Right? I have been to both when I lived in Europe, but, I am thinking I need to go back again. It has been a while. I thank you so much and yes! This was a fun post to do and I hope you do a blog about your history.

You are an American Indian? Do you know which tribe? Have you gone to any of the PowWows? I put out a post on one I went to and I just had the most fabulous time there! If you haven't, let me know. I will link you to the post. If you have, it is just another PowWow.

Well, when I get unbusy from this post and the one ahead, I will be popping in, but it had over 100 comments, as MarketFridays do... so it takes me a bit to answer... plus they link me to their post, which I go over and comment and steem and tip and well, it is just time, right? :)

I won't bother you too much.. sounds like you have a lot of typing to do (that happens when your a popular steemian I suppose) :-P

My great grandmother was part of the Iroquois tribe or confederacy. I have been to several pow-wows over the years. Lots of feathered stuff, jewelry, pottery, leather things bought. been a while since we've gone to one. She was an independent and strong woman who was also quite opinionated. She may have been Penn State's biggest football fan as well. haha.

I'm not that interesting.. just here breathing and trying to make the most out of the time I have been given. Everybody has a little coolness and creativity just waiting to come out I suppose. My puppies think I am pretty cool though.. especially when I'm eating..lol.

Have a great day and do not answer this post.. NO TIP EITHER! Pass it along for me to the next "interesting" thing you read :-) Ms Tipper!

Before your leave of absence I love dropping in on your post because to me, but you always were interesting and it doesn't matter what you think. LOL I hope to be doing more of that and then I am off on another adventure the first week of February for most of the month. I actually do find it quite exciting to be he's just a little bit part Indian but in your case it sounds like quite a bit of Indian. I am sure she was an interesting woman and I am hoping that you took some good photographs of her. Thanks again for your time and your words and trust me, I love hearing you. Have the most awesome day.

Have a blast on your adventure! Lots of good material for posts coming would be my guess ;-)

Pictures are tough.. I may be able to dig up a few.. maybe. She was not a big picture person. hated it.. but i will surely dig through to see. My brother did most of the family tree and research on the tribe, so he may just have something or even gave something to me a while ago. I'll have to do some research of my own I suppose. Have a terrific day @dswigle!!!!!

They are wonderful, these events! I get chills too when I hear the bagpipes. They still play them at funerals of policemen here. I thought I have seen it also in England, but, I could be wrong.

If you have the chance, don't miss it. The music alone is amazing and well, it might well be because I love the fiddle and the bagpipes. But, I will go again next year. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your words!

Ah! So that's where our Zulu dancers got it from?
In place of the kilts they wear loin skins made of lion skin Lol
Instead of the Scottish headwear, our local guys don leopard tails.
In place of the bagpipes they have spears and shields.
Wow! The scots had a great influence in Africa Lol.

Now serious, you must have enjoyed your adventure there Lady Denise and so bad that the one guy busted the myth of no underrods under his skirt. I bet several ladies were disappointed.
A lovely post here!
Blessings!

Haha! Oh, you could hear the resounding disappointment in the crowd of women! :) Frankly, I was a little relieved as I had two of my daughters there. My son, not so worried.

It was a great many days of fun and I look forward to seeing the Zulu dancers one day. Although, I should have made that a priority years ago when things weren't so commercialized and different than they once were. But, progress, yes?

Some day when things calm down there, I will feel like I can move about freely without fear, I will be there. Africa is still a huge adventure.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving me lovely words. Have a wonderful week ahead!

You are so right my friend, now is definitely not the right time to visit and by the looks of, also not in the near future.
Only when the races realize that they must all work together and the looters are stopped will things start to improve.
There is always hope of course, but in the meantime things are rough.
Glad that your daughters were not "exposed" to something that could affect them negatively.
Blessings to all of you and thank you for the kind tip!

Of course, that makes me sad as this year was the year of Africa.

Le Sigh.

But, I would rather be safe than sorry. The State Department has been sending me the no go a message for a while... :)If there is any chance of violence or looting (you get the drift) I get an advisory to stay clear. So, I get to go to Columbia and Panama this time around. I will save a bigger trip for later in the year.

Haha! No "no exposure" was checked before I took them.

Stay blessed, my friend!

I'm excited to go to Columbia! I haven't been back there in a very long time, it was one of those No (no go)

Oh, Zambia! Now I am jealous! When I was a young girl, I used to dream of living in Africa and National Geographic really made that come to life!

Have a great day!

All that I ask is that you take care my friend.
At school one of my best subjects was history and I admired John Livingstone, or was it David Livingstone? In any case it was great to explore the places where the great man made his inroads. I even visited the small town called Livingstone in northern Zimbabwe. Chobe in Botswana is another of my favorites. Oh and of course the mighty Victoria waterfalls.
Then there are places such as Magoebas Kloof with the tea plantations here in the far north of South Africa that should never be missed.
I think that you know that I have just taken you on a short tour in our backyard and I trust that you have enjoyed the trip.
May your day also be filled with love and laughter!

Those are actually a little different than these. These are clan kilts, as the Scots are divided into clans! See here for the list of clans and tartans.

I had a skirt also with the pin to keep it closed in the front. I believe they were the fashion at the time. I loved mine and felt so Scottish in mine! :)

Oh, you know it!! Hmmmm. A black kilt. You might have to give us a post on that bad boy. The $50 question would be to ask you if you knit your socks? Because any respectable Scot knits his own. :)

You and your black, black heart. Haha! Not even close, unless you count when you are filming your Star Wars paraphernalia. Now that stuff is dark. Like your heart kilt.

This is so wonderful, @dswigle. It looks like so much fun! The pictures are so beautiful and I’m amazed by people knitting their own socks to pass the time between games! That old guy is so cute. This is a wonderful view into a world I may never actually experience in person!

Your little kilt comments had me in fits of giggles — whether it’s an advantage or not to wear a kilt while fencing...? Ha ha. Something to ponder! And yes it does sort of eliminate a bit of intrigue to discover when the lad spins that he’s wearing athletic shorts! 😆

Methinks he may be too American to go traditional. It takes a special breed to ummm...lay the jewelry out for strangers. You know, perhaps trust issues.

Actually, I thought this was pretty cool with the guys knitting their own socks too. How many of our men can/will do that? But, it was pretty neat all the way around. I am sure that somewhere you have one too. If you ever get a chance, you should go to one. It is quite entertaining.

And interesting. I learned things I never thought I would want to. And I will add that it was very interesting. :)

Thanks for stopping by and giving it a look and leaving an always stellar comment. I hope you have a good rest of your week!
