My market on a sad autumn-winter day

avatar

In this part of the world, in Eastern Europe, we have a winter like an autumn. Global warming or who knows why causes, the beginning of winter to be pushed to next year!

I remember that in my youth but especially in my childhood the winter it started, meaning there was a lot of snow and cold, at the beginning of December ... I think this blog will be with a few references in the past.

That should have been the case now!

So it is now, on this day of December 13th.

A short walk to the neighborhood market on a rainy December day.

For this story I was inspired by @dswigle and her #MarketFriday. Actually, it's not a story. I want to take a picture of a lesser known part of a city, Bucharest. A part of the city that even a large part of the inhabitants of the city don't know.

Those who know me know that I live in a suburb of a big city in Romania, Bucharest. Because many of those who know me are no longer here, many no longer read my posts, then I must say for any new readers that I live in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Romania, a country on the edge of Europe.

I am happy that I live in a suburb, the former slum. I am happy that I live far from the turmoil and pollution of the big city. The suburb is full of greenery, every house has in the yard at least one tree and a park with secular trees is one minute away. Beyond all these are the people! I forgot to say that I have been living in this neighborhood for almost twenty years. Most of my neighbors have always lived here, they were born here.

The neighborhood has changed and modernized in the last twenty years, since, like myself, many residents of the city center who wanted peace and greenery began to move here.

Some of the old residents of the neighborhood sold their houses and gardens and left, but those who remained remained with their old habits. Old habits refer to a rural lifestyle. Although it was close to the city, this neighborhood, like most of the neighborhoods around Bucharest, were large ... villages. Here, in particular, people from the province lived to work in the city. They came with their customs from the country ... in most of their yards they raised hens, ducks and even pigs.

Everything I've said so far is necessary to explain why the neighborhood market looks as you will see. It looks pretty bad, sometimes dirty and with improvised stalls. It looks the same as it was 40-50 years ago, if we remove the many cars that flood it now.
For all the importance was the quality of the products sold here. And the price! A low price for high quality. Organic products!

These are the causes that make me go only to this market. And because it is very close to my house, a few streets away.

In a wet and ugly winter(which has not yet come) day I left, driven by needs, to the market.

Due to bad weather, the market is almost empty, both for customers and sellers. Also, because it's Friday. The market is full especially at the weekend. This is the entrance to the market and now you will understand why I made such a long introduction with the history of this place and the explanation why these people are less interested in the image of the place.

Before I go any further I must apologize for the poor quality of the photos. I had to photograph as discreetly as possible. People here do not like being photographed, many are not allowed to sell here ... and yet they do. If they see that they are photographed they think they can be called to the police. The first example is right here, where someone sells fish caught in the nearby lakes.

Although a little risky, I also bought a fish of about 4 kg. This is a fish that eats only underwater vegetation, the so-called phytophagus.
I had to clean it and cut it in the yard. I got sick because of this, as I said it was a cold and humid day.

I also had the joy of seeing flowers in the yard. Instead of snow there are spring flowers!

Back to the market, there is cold and moisture and few people. A little merchandise.

In the foreground are pumpkins. They sell well, everyone eats pumpkin pie or pumpkin in the oven on these cold days. They are very good, milled, sweet and warm (in the oven).

The winter holidays are approaching and the first signs are also on the market. They are traditions. Pretzels! These are offered to children who will be singing on New Year's Eve.

Also, the first Christmas trees appeared. Now they are very expensive, people are waiting for Christmas to come when it is possible to get cheaper.

Now some less happy sellers this month, meat sellers. Orthodox Christians don't eat meat until Christmas, so sales are lower and stores are nearly empty.

Instead, the bakeries are full. I don't know why, maybe because it's hot inside! Or because they are the only modernly arranged places.

My favorite bakery. Bread made after traditional recipes and in the oven where wood is burnt.

I think you noticed the multitude of cars, a real treat as well as the people who build a house roof. That is, unfortunately, here the laws are not very respected. It is built hot and results in extremely ugly buildings as there is no respect for parking spaces (which are few) and that is why cars are left everywhere. Extremely unpleasant.

Bakery is a pleasure. I bake bread and cakes only from here. Good and hot bread! It is very pleasing to see how to bake bread while you wait to buy.

I left home with a nice and tasty bread. My favorite, potato bread.

Bread and fish. That's what I bought today. I am satisfied, there is the promise of tasty food. I like to eat fish. This was the story of the nearby market. The peasant market near my house.

A flower, always a flower, This is how our friend Denise gets used to ending her #marketfriday postings (actually she is the initiator of this challenge). I will end with something new, with an image I saw in a corner of the market.

Thanks for taking us along with you on the visit to the market, and I do agree with you the weather patterns are all over the place without a doubt

I love the pheasant market. There is something so neighborly about it. I know that the other markets are cleaner and probably more organized, however, everyone knows everyone here and you know where the food comes from.

I am with you on the fish thing. I could eat fish or seafood every day. That is the way I was brought up, living on the sandy beaches of New England so I thought everyone in the States ate fish all the time. Little did I know that many were pure meat-eaters.

The weather is crazy! Flori minunate care se numesc violete. They are indestructable~!

Your bakery is wonderful, I can smell that potato bread from here. Isn't it funny how we develop habit when we live somewhere for a while. Have a wonderful weekend, Dan!

Haha! I should send you a flower! :)

#MarketFriday loves you!

I really like it when #MarketFriday loves me. Thanks!
Thank you understand why I love this market ... and because I love it I show its less beautiful sides.
I'm glad we're in the same team of fish eaters. You are a professional! The advantage of those who grew up on the beach.
A wonderful weekend for you too!

It is nice seeing your part of the world especially the market in this season. If the prices are lower wouldn't mind if the place is dirty.

Thank you! The place is not always dirty, this sensation was given by the bad and humid weather.

Small older market place may not be pleasing to some, it will always offer friendly faces, familiar chatting about the unusual weather.

Good nourishing food, lower cost always more pleasing than big city shops that all look the same @bluemoon, at least you know where the food is coming from.

This is quite the journey. I really enjoyed reading about the local markets in Romania, although I’m sorry for the lack of snow. Climate change is now apparent everywhere. 😟 And I’m sorry you got sick. Take care of yourself!

Thank you very much! I apologize for the response so late. Yes, the climate has changed a lot and I think we will continue to have surprises. Thanks for your concern for my health, I hope it will be better.
