Market Friday Doesn't Go Shopping

avatar

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share different markets across the globe. I find it one of my greatest pleasures on the platform, mixing our cultures and our lives. Share in the experience of enjoying markets from around the world and different cultures.

Fear has gripped the United States. Not all of us, but, some have taken it to another level. The aisles of empty store shelves and the barely anything there dairy cases give the appearance that we should be alarmed, at the very least. Are we running out of food?? Not even close. This is what I was met with last Friday.

Not a traditional #MarketFriday, but, who doesn't love to be a little bit different? There is no right or wrong here, just what drives you that week. I love to share and be shared with! So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

The perception that they are battling against is that there is a huge shortage of food and will not be able to be supplied. If people hadn't panicked and bought out the stores, perhaps this wouldn't have happened. But, people started hoarding non-perishables right away, giving the probability that shortages and empty shelves were one their way.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They are so much easier to find in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much for joining us!! ❤

I am looking at that cheese that is left hanging in the middle door and I am pretty sure if nobody has touched it, it is something I wouldn't want. Desperate times may call for someone to come back and get it though.

Admittedly, I was in an unnamed grocery store, perusing up the aisles for pictures, I had long ago done my food. But, anyway, the only thing left in the bread aisle was Nature Valley Honey Wheat Bread. The rest was empty. Now, I can tell you that even if I ate that stuff, the fact that nobody else would touch it should tell you something, right?

20200316_122336.jpg

I kid you not. I won't keep posting empty shelves. We all know what it has been looking like. It is dismal. I have all the food I can possibly need and I just know that when we ease up, the supply wagon will be able to give us more. Slow down, it isn't going anywhere. If you need something, go to the store when it opens, Most places stock overnight. If you are over 60, most of the stores are opening the store for two hours, usually, Tuesdays and Thursdays for them to shop without the crowds. Check with your own stores to see if they are doing this.

It is a trying time for many, kids out of school, people out of jobs or working from home. No places to escape to, not even a movie to watch, although the industry is fixing that. But, we will persevere and we will be fine. I want to thank you all for showing up for #MarketFriday and I wish each and every one of you well. Be safe and practice sanitizing and proper handwashing. And still no handshaking. I don't even like elbow bumping. Just bow. No touching.

Lastly, a flower. #alwaysaflower. To color my world. Daffodils are on the menu this week, Everywhere you look, the loveliness is there, it never escapes me. Oh, may I gaze upon you, always and a day?

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
    folding at the middle
    like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
    tried to ‘okay’ my voice
    i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

    i’ve been praying,
    and these are what my prayers look like;
    dear god
    i come from two countries
    one is thirsty
    the other is on fire
    both need water.

    later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
    and whispered,
    "where does it hurt?"
    it answered,

    "everywhere"
    "everywhere"
    "everywhere"

I read a news even Amazon suspended grocery delivery due to "high order volumes". For me, attention on the cryptocurrencies market.

I heard that from a newspaper in China, but, it isn't true at all. I know because I still get deliveries on a regular basis.

I am not sure where they got that from.

Thank you for being part of the challenge and for dropping the link here!

Perhaps those greedy ones can show their filled pantries and rooms. The rich can afford to buy the rest can drop dead and die?
There's plenty of food but someone needs to fill those shelves. What I do not understand is why shops are accepting this behavior. Because they sell great and do not care?
It's simple.
Four hours open, three hours closed to fill the shelves, one hour open for elderly people only, one hour closed, three hours open and a max if two items.
I see the popcorn is left how come no one bought it? Once stuck home there's a lot of time to kill inside in front if the television. I will see next week if there's something I can afford to buy. I have no freezer and fridge and doubt I'll die for hunger.
I wish you a great day. 💕

I'm actually not sure how to respond to this. It had nothing to do with rich or poor, just the panic that people feel. I doubt I will die of hunger either. :)

Have a great weekend ahead!

Gosh your supermarkets do have lots go bare shelves. Ours are not as bad but it is sad to see that the panic shopping is not going away.
Thanks for reminding me to go on a #marketfriday trip.

I laughed when I read the title of your post !

No... there is no shortage in general and yes, the people are the reason for these empty shelves, that didn't have to be empty.

Maybe the cheese and bread aren't the ones no one would buy, maybe they are just the only ones that came in and were replenished ? Ok... just throwing out another possibility. ;)

Love the daffodil !

Hope you are doing well and staying safe.

XOXOXO

Yes, with this nasty virus, my whole life changed. You have to be very careful not to get caught. But it's Friday and we're going to the fair to have fun :-)
Here is my new post.

Scary stuff! Those empty shelves make me feel like in some sci-fi novel about the end of the world. The supply chain does seem to be catching up, however. I've heard from two people in Toronto that the stores are now fully restocked and you can buy everything including hand sanitizer. Here in Victoria, I'm seeing the somewhat the same thing. I went out yesterday for eggs and I saw shelves being restocked with toilet paper and dairy products. The frozen food aisle was looking a lot more normal. I didn't try to find hand sanitizer because I wasn't sure where to look and I wanted to get the hell out of there. I did try to buy a thermometer but no luck with that.

Stay safe! The streets are empty here and my goodness... the birds sound so much louder with the reduction in car traffic!

It's true! All of the above! The streets are empty, even here in Washington, DC... Can you believe it?

Except at the Tidal Basin. The darn tourists are still coming!! I won't go down there. I walk on by. That is a first.

Different stores put hand sanitizer in different places. Costco and other stores here put it in the health and beauty. One place put it in the soap aisles. I just don't want to spend any time there. I want out as nobody knows how to keep the correct social distance.

The birds are louder, the flowers prettier and life is so peaceful if it weren't for this dang pandemic hanging over our heads. Right? Keep safe and stay away from the stores. Order off Amazon for God's sake.

We don't need to hear about you getting sick. :(

Thanks, Denise. I won't go back to a Costco again till this is all over. They were rioting over toilet paper last week, it's just insane! Some local distilleries have apparently started to manufacture hand sanitizer. Cathy and I go out for walks a few times per day. You should see us zigzag down the road, crossing to the other side any time someone threatens to come within 50 yards of us! I notice other people doing the same thing now. Honestly, I'm very scared by all this.

You should be practicing exactly the social distancing that you are. I stocked my pantry and paper supplies (I get them every six months, I hate shopping for them) almost a month ago, so I am all good.

Glad you and Cathy are keeping up the exercise! I hope you are punching an extra dose of vitamin C and maybe some Elderberry... and your multivitamin at least. :)

Keep safe and just know that you are in my thoughts.

@dswigle,

Hey Denise.

People have lost their minds. Mass hysteria. In my 52 years I have never seen anything to which so many have over-reacted ... and I've spent a lot of time in war zones. We are creating the very catastrophe we were trying to avoid.

Florida is shuttered. Even the beaches. Forget a recession, this is going to cause a depression. Go forbid when the next set of economic numbers come out.

No kidding! I am surely disappointed with everyone! They are creating the shortage themselves. It is so annoying, honestly.

I was over at Fort Myers Commissary (The Base Adjoining Arlington) and the commisary there was nothing like the civilian sector. Why? Because most in the military or even if they are only associated with it have different life experiences.

Makes a difference.

You should be in the National Capital Region. Government Buildings are shuttered, everyone is telecommuting, nobody can use the Metro unless there is a reason, so they are totally empty! Time to build a new house when the market crashes.

Le sigh.

Hi! Forgot to post here: the link to my post.

https://peakd.com/marketfriday/@kaminchan/market-friday-villagers-paying-respect-to-the-nagas

Thank you very much for your generous support and encouraging comment.

Yesterday there was a mad rush of people in supermarkets in Bangkok. The shelves for toilet roles were emptied! Luckily I did my shopping three weeks ago. Any way, I don’t think we will run out of food or toilet rolls this year. I am more concerned about the spread of the virus and economy.

Praying that things would get better soon!

Take care.
