Life and Mallorca, 1 of ?

My first month back on the Island of Mallorca has gone quickly. Here are a few photos dotted around a catch-up on how things are progressing.

If you include the snow that landed on the Tramuntana mountains earlier this week, Mallorca has seen glimpses of all 4 seasons since I arrived. Weeks of sunshine to start have turned into cold and windy days and nights, and we are currently receiving a fair amount of water from the heavens. The island welcomes the rain though, it does get pretty parched during the summer months, and with bars, restaurants, and shopping centers being closed for 2 weeks on Monday, we might as well get the unpleasant weather out of the way at the same time.

I've been working during the day, equipped with a 4g connection that is doing the job pretty well, at a price. The change in location hasn't affected my output, and thanks to my mums partner's eye for a decent office chair at the knockdown price of 0, I'm actually working at a table, and not the sofa as I was in the UK.

Around work, there have been visits to offices, print/photocopying joints, photographers, and solicitors, in order to progress my application to become a long term resident, and a legal one in terms of taxes too. This is moving along, although not at the pace I wish for and it's a little stressful wondering if things will be sorted in time. I have a 6 month deadline, or it's back to the UK, or somewhere else - I'm not hopeful work would agree to that though.

Padel training hasn't kicked off yet. I did email the local court but got nothing back, and so when it warms up a bit and stops raining I'll pluck up the courage to go ask if someone is available to coach me. I left my 'starter' keyboard in the UK, and due to things still being up in the air, don't really want to splash out on anything too sizable, incase I need to get on an airplane again before the summer. It's still on the list though, as is a guitar - not purchased yet for the same reason.

What I have bought, which could end up being super awesome or a totally rash purchase, is a Drone. It's not close to top of the range, but will do nicely as a starter gadget and I've got a few places in mind to take some footage from, once I've learned how to fly it. Expect videos this year - if it survives further than the unboxing post.

Alright, enough ramble, and onto a few photos I took prior to the rains arriving. The first two looked to be good signal for a change in weather, and the winds arrived morning after these were taken.

It's hard not to include a few photos of the sea when you live less than a kilometer away....

20201226_154248.jpg

You may have seen this unfinished but active Church last week sometime, probably my favourite place to visit for some quiet time at present.

20201226_151047.jpg

The final 3 were taken in Palma a couple of weeks ago. It was a Sunday but I could not believe how quiet the place was. Both the water feature at the foot of the Cathedral, and the stairs in the second photo have been pretty busy the times I have visited previously.

20201220_141357.jpg

20201220_142259.jpg

A little tacky, but included to wrap things up.

20201220_143051.jpg

Mallorca cases are at a high, same for the UK, and it looks like the first quarter of this year in Europe is a write-off. We'll get to the summer and things will improve, that's obvious isn't it with the better weather. However, are we all going to be vaccinated and safe from mutant virus next autumn and winter though? I doubt it.

So does that mean more lockdowns, more money printing, more Bitcoin and co. to the moon?

Enjoy the weekend, cheers,

Asher

What a sunrise. Came wait to see some sunrise drone shots, sunsets too for that matter.

It's going nuts here in the UK, Scotland fairing slightly better than down south but still shit. They will fuck up the vaccines and it will still be a shit show for ages to come. At least there is beer :0)

Yeah I'm pretty excited for some Drone action, I hope I don't fly it into the Med on its maiden flight!

They will fuck up the vaccines and it will still be a shit show for ages to come.

Can't see any other outcome. The virus already mutating so the vaccine is outdated, or am I missing something?

Beer! Yes! Oh wait, I'm doing dry January :O :O

Ahh, cheers!

Can only drink at home from Monday here anyway, so that would mean much solo boozing. Blown it on a drone instead :)

I hope I can pay a little bit of it off with some extremely high quality aerial content :)

Sad how the place is deserted of people! Looks like a beautiful place for sure though. We have poked a realtor here to help us buy some land somewhere sunny and warm which we thought would be sold in an hour but he seems a bit lazy, haven't heard back, I talked to him on Monday.

Ah, challenging with the questionability of citizenship at a time like this. You'd think they would welcome a person from outside to live in their place?!

Yeah, eerie stuff in Palma the other week - was deserted!

Good luck with the land in the sunshine, that sounds like a worthwhile purchase to me :)

I wouldn't call them welcoming at the offices, but I got here before the end of the year so should sneak in alright. The bigger issue is taxation, but I got people working on it so just got to wait and see. Cheers!

Looked night but brought the wind and rain!

I've eaten those 'chips' before. You get about 8 in a box and they are soggy and fuck. Cheers!

Yeah, they are pretty nasty. I remember eating them along with packet noodles a lot when I was in uni. Can still remember thinking that the cardboard box woulda probably tasted better.

Thanks dude. Would be nice to get the drone out when the sky looks like that - can't really fail to get some nice shots.

It sounds like your move is as plagued by form filling as mine is - honestly, I think there's been at least one day every week where I've had to spend a morning or afternoon going to fetch some pieced of official paper and feel the need to get wasted afterwards because it's so stressful.

I have to drive up and down a mountain to get the nearest printer/ photocopier. At least it's free - the 'local' library. Got a really nice early 90s vibe to it!

I did order a printer/ photocopier/ scanner from Spanish Amazon - they fucked me - the delivery date is sometime in February - still, it'll come in handy eventually!

haha, to all of that :D

It is true, form filling is the norm right now and it is stressful filling in forms where you have to translate everything.

My photocopier place is down the hill, and each time I go I have to round up to a euro or feel like a tight arse.

I ordered some vape juice from amazon recently, they delivered a card game...

Add dry Jan to that lot :)

There's a card game called 'vape juice'?

I've come to the conclusion it's best to be sober in Jan and life is a bit shit - hangovers during such a time are just too crap!

Naa, they sent totally the wrong thing :(

Agreed, almost done a 3rd already, piece of piss!

Looks really nice! I bet you're glad you are not in the UK now. That photo of the pink street - wow! Beautiful. What kind of drone did you get/ I'd really like one for when we eventually take off in the Landrover, if we are ever allowed to leave this fucking island, that is.

Deffo happy not to be there!

Search DJI Mini 2 on Amazon, it's 249g which makes it a little more legit to fly (over people's heads) here.

I'd really like one for when we eventually take off in the Landrover

Fuck yeah, you have a flying Landrover?!

Omg this made me spit out my tofu curry all over my keyboard! A flying landrover would be so wicked.

Will check that out, sounds awesome.

Ah, that's the one we were looking at!

Hate it when I get sauce on my keyboard 😒

It looks like a good starter drone, not crazy money but still with a decent camera. I'm excited, first toy I've had in years!

Good luck to you, with your life abroad.
To fly your drone legally in Spain, please check Spanish drone regulations. For example you need fireproof plates on your drone and remote control, with details of your drone and your contact.
But it is real fun to fly a drone, so enjoy.

Thank you for bringing flight regulations to me :)

I checked the link, and as the drone I ordered is 249g, I'm good to go apart from the 'fireproof plates' - need to check out what that is, cheers!

When I visited Spain in September, I ordered mine from Germany. They are not expensive and good quality. There is a link:

Nice, thanks.

I guess these will take the weight over 249g - they didn't think of that did they!

When I am back in Europe someday and it is allowed to travel I come visit.

We go to the Ballermann first of course to visit my people and then you can show me the rest of the island while I hold my head in shame for my people

Gorgeous colors in the first two pics. The mask on the statue is funny 😁, the architecture is really nice, I imagine this place must be full when covid and lockdowns aren't happening. Nice shots!

Good luck on getting your long term residency, hopefully it works out for you, it must be a stressful situation but have faith. A drone would be a neat toy to get to celebrate if it works out the way you hope!

I really like what I've seen of Palma, both when busy and empty.

Thank you very much for the best wishes re: Residency :) And yes, looking forward to playing with my new toy!

Hard to imagine that part of Palma virtually deserted!

Our numbers have also gone sky high and we're back in a semi-lockdown. No alcohol sales and a 9pm to 6am curfew. It's a disaster.

Stay well and hope it all comes together for you, Asher and I look forward to more photos.

Yeah it was very strange, but quite enjoyable to walk around pretty much alone.

Your curfew is very similar, but at least we can buy booze - I'm not sure what the logic in stopping sales is?

Thank you!

The alcohol ban is directly linked to trauma cases taking medical resources. We have huge problem here and the alcohol ban meant not one New Year's eve trauma case at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital in Joburg. It's the largest hospital in Africa. Overall, There is a more than 60% reduction in trauma cases when alcohol is not legally sold.

I don't agree with it given that only about 30% of the population drinks. However, among those that do, binge drinking is a huge issue. We will hear this week if things will ease. I am not confident as we have had between 17 and 21k+ new daily cases in the last week. And those are the testes cases. I know of at least one positive cases where he's not been tested. He definitely has it because he has the same symptoms as his wife who did test positive.

A bit of a long-assed answer...🤦🏼‍♀️

beautiful photos. Especially first two and of course a masterpiece that is the last one.

With that being said if introvert like me thinks that in the streets is not enough people something clearly is wrong. Maybe this is just a bug and people will load soon...
