"The Mayfly"

Some days start off great. Everything is going along well,
Then something happens, or you get some news,
And the world as you thought you knew it,
Crumbles, and you are left with few choices.

You can either roll with the punches and adapt.
Or
You can cower in helpless, apoplectic fear,
Or
You can change and adapt.
Then
You can make better choices for the future.

All this means little to the ones who left, whose
Time was up and are no longer here.
It always leaves a gap in our lives where that person
Once was, even though many years and many more
Miles and life experiences have intervened
Since last you saw each other.

Such things bring to diamond sharp clarity
Just how fragile we are in this life,
How like the “Mayfly” we are.

Compared to the lifespan of a galaxy or star,
We are less than a sparkle on a stream as
It flows past us, bringing light and music with it.

Those things may seem ephemeral, but to the
Mayfly, they are timeless.
All we can do is move ever towards the light,
And away from the darkness.
Like the Mayflies do.

She and I were in the same class from about 7th grade up. She was in love
With another mutual friend, a grade or two behind us. I loved her in my
Own way, but couldn't let on, because I loved them both. I was one
Year older than she, and I will miss her.}
