Weekly Zekely - Community, Spice and Musical Hockey

zeke.jpg

I like to pause once every so often and look back through my photos to relive memorable moments, remember the forgotten ones, and reflect upon adventures of the recent past...all in vain hope my small-town swashbuckling entertains you.

We are approaching the end of of a month-long lockdown to the power of stay-at-home order and wondering if we will have to do it all again. No matter because you can't stop Zeke from adventuring.

This week you get 6 pics and 6 stories.

Might as well get the work out of the way first. "We have an installation" they said. "A bit of a long cable run" they said.
This is a panoramic shot I had to send to explain this was a little more than a simple long cable run. It doesn't even do it justice as the end point is 3 stories up, there is a recession to the left you can't see in the photo, and the antenna has to go around front another 40 feet past the corner on the right. I have dropped yellow dots on the anchors I will have to drill.

If you don't feel sorry for me now, just wait til my next Ladders post.

A year ago easter, the Dufferin Groove hockey team was scheduled to hit the stage as a headline slot in the annual Hockey Summit of the Arts. Riding the wave of recent momentum including smash hit performances:

I will have to rehash the stories for my most recent legion of followers but that will be another post. For, there has been neither rehearsal, nor hockey for most of the year in this country. We have stayed in contact digitally but that is about it. You can tell there is a little excitement for getting back to hockey eventually. Then polishing up our next show, Huey Lewises and the Groove. Til then, we will share images like this:

Speaking of hockey, one of our players had his car broken into, and all of his goalie equipment stolen. This is pretty much considered a capital crime in Canada. Not only is it impossible to replace the custom made sweaters, but goalie equipment is insanely expensive.

One bit of good news is that Dinser found one of his Groove jerseys in another bag! The rest of his equipment was replaced by other goal tenders in the league and he is back in business.

I love me some hot stuff. I grow hot peppers in the garden, make it into hot sauce in the winter, and really enjoy hot and spicy food. This is a bag of some of the seriously hot snacks. A nice gift for me and a decent punch of heat to the mouth while gaming. Had to share!

Along the lines of spicy food, I snapped this one while onsite with a client. as there is a funny trend in town called #signwars. Businesses are either shuttered, closed to patrons, or operating at partial capacity. Some local businesses are having fun engaging each other with messages on their billboards and shop windows.

Here' re have a new kickass southern BBQ restaurant throwing their hat in the ring with some shots fired across the bow of one of their local suppliers. Amazing what you will see with a strong community of businesses.

Speaking of strong community, we have plenty of that as well. I have had the privilege of working with the regional multicultural association and their efforts of supporting newcomers to the country and those in need. I never thought about how hard it would be to navigate a health system, let alone during a pandemic, in a foreign country. As one of the latest initiatives, volunteers and organization members have been providing free transportation for folks who might otherwise have difficulty getting to their immunization appointments.

In typical MAPH flare, they added a red carpet to the service as they are VIPS for doing what it takes to prevent the spread of the virus. Well done http://www.MAPH.ca!

Of course there was beer! This one is a mediocre NEIPA from a nearby region which I showcased on #beersaturday week 201 https://hive.blog/beersaturday/@zekepickleman/beersaturday-201-looking-down-from-the-short-hills-for-expansion. That is up for week #202? I will see which of the old favourites, new brews, or a handful of sours in the fridge will produce the most blog-worthy stories.

We are 4 weeks into a Grey/lockdown with an added stay at home order, while not expecting any change for at least the next 2 weeks. Numbers of new cases are still discomforting as the metropolitian areas are starting to send the overflow of ICU patients to our hospitals. Hopefully our sustem can take it and the strength and diligence of the local community can continue to weather the storm well together.

Thanks for checking in. Stay safe and happy 'til the next Zekely.

Aww that sucks about the theft! I love the logo with Dr. Teeth, though. I've been enjoying the various Sign Wars posts I've seen online. The original shoe store/music store one apparently spread to their whole block! LOL

Can you imagine wanting to steal a whole pile of the bulkiest smelliest gear? No idea.

There are signs of humour everywhere and it is great to see the businesses having fun.

Right? There are some thefts that are just so WEIRD. Like, you understand when valuable things that someone might sell at a pawn shop or whatever are stolen. But like ...hockey gear?
Locally I've seen a restaurant post on Nextdoor that someone stole their giant couch-sized wooden bench that was in their outdoor area. Like ...that's pretty identifiable? If someone stole it and put it in their yard, it'd be easy to spot ...ntm heavy af to haul away and enormous. They literally PLANNED and came with a pickup truck to steal a wooden couch?
Another weird one is people having plants DUG UP FROM THEIR YARDS and stolen. I can only imagine that it's some shady lawn/gardening company who charges customers for buying plants but really they just steal them, because otherwise ...what?? You're gonna steal someone's bush and put it in your own yard, really?

Yah man. That is the lowest of the low. Nobody wants that shit anyway and it is expensive as hell to replace. He is a real hockey whore to so he uses it every week when COVID allows team sports.

Not even. Like stuff that can be turned into plenty of beer but it will take an extra a step.
