Summer Solstice Sunrise Smoke Smudge on the water

(Edited)

My son and I were up at 5:00 am today to go out for a kayak on the river and watch the sunrise to celebrate the summer Solstice. We made it out onto the water for around 5:15 and watched the sun come up. We had our fishing rods, sage and some dry cedar to make a little smoke ceremony out on the water.

Here comes the Sun.

Paddling, Paddling ... trying to keep up.

We met many mystical creatures on our journey. They told us many stories.

Can you spot the wise old turtle ?

We paddled to the edge of the earth.... until we ran into this giant wall... the earth must be flat. Lol

Too steep for a portage.... Happy Summer Solstice.

We met a guy who has been catching walleye ( pickerel) out of the river all spring. I had no idea we had those in the river. I thought just bass and perch and sun fish.

You had me at this 😂😂

the earth must be flat.

And beautiful photographs! Must be quite serene in the morning. Also, what is the smudge used for? (I am totally unfamiliar with fishing, apologies if it seems stupid) :) 🌸

It is unrelated to the fishing.... but it is kind of related to the fishing.... it is the burning of sacred herbs (white sage, cedar etc ) practiced by Indigenous peoples ( Anishinaabe) here in Canada and USA

My ancestors are Ojibwe (Chippewa) and we do the smudge to celebrate the Summer Solstice and to give thanks to the Great Spirit ..... Gitchee Manitou.

I see, had no idea!
What a nice gesture of celebrating the summer Solstice and being thankful. Will do some reading on it.

This makes me want to get my Kayak and goout in the bay. Not allowed in the water right now because of quarantine. I miss paddling to work and back, the best commute ever
