Creative Chaos

I've never been very organised or cared much about keeping my apartment clean. I get stressed if there is a lot of shit around and chaos all over, but I don't want to have a home, computer or a brain where everything is in perfect order and there is not a speck of dust anywhere, that would kill my creativity. I like a little crazy mess everywhere.

The way I file my photos is a pretty perfect example of how I like my life. I have separate folder for different cameras, and then self portraits and other photos in their own sub-folder. What you see in the above picture is Fujifilm -> Self Portraits, and every shoot has it's own folder. Sounds very organised doesn't it? To this point yes, but if you look at the file names, there is not much rime or reason to them. Apparently I like to make it hard for myself to later find pictures from a certain shoot.

Basically the way I name the folder is a game of associations, the first word that come to mind, or something similar, will be the name. It makes perfect sense at the moment, but very little sense down the road. I also use both Finnish and English words, to make it extra fun and hard. If you were to ask me what each of these folders contains, I don't think I could tell you even half of them, before opening up and seeing one picture. I still think this filing system makes more sense than doing it by year and month. The hell do I know what happened in September 2017.

One of the only things I miss about having a PC and Windows was that the picture folders automatically had a cover image to give at least some sort of idea of the content. I hope AI and all that super fancy and scary technology develops to the point where I can do a search on my computer by thinking of a certain picture and it will pull up the correct folder which contains it. That would save me HOURS every week. I remember pictures, not names or words.

On my Linux system, there are thumbnails for the directories.

Perhaps you could use software such as XnView or Digikam to manage your photos. The both generate thumbnails for directories. It is available on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Digikam has a database back end, so it also allows you to tag your photos, sort and search them.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely check them out to see if they would work for me! :)

Organization is my thing lol I'm such a stickler for a place for everything, I just think it makes all flow better throughout your day.

From what I’ve seen, your home looks immaculate, soooo nice! I would never be able to do that 😂
