Responsibility slips away too easily from the hands of those who don’t make good use of it. Because after all, nobody likes to be put under the guilt radar. The narcissist child inside us begs not to be inflicted with the pain that comes with ownership. As taking ownership risks leaving a permanent stain on our most precious asset a.k.a our reputation.

A reputation must be protected at all costs, even if that comes with the price of losing our authenticity. Saving out mask to the world can only be done by denying to ourselves the true nature of our actions. When Blame invites Shame to join the game, the race to escape as fast as humanely possible the playground of guilt begins. You best believe running away from responsibility is a race with too high of a success rate.

Yet some human fuckups are so brutal in their very nature that attempting to rationalize them is near impossible. That’s precisely when throwing the blame on external causes becomes our only way out of losing face. If you can’t justify the unjustifiable, might as well hold something or someone else accountable for it, right? Even if you know damn well in the darkness of your soul that the monster lives nowhere but inside you.
