Downtown Shots of Taipei, Taiwan

I've gone out a couple times for some street photography in Taipei. The bright hot sun in Taipei makes it a little difficult to get good shots because the sun blows out the highlights but I did what I could to make these pictures look better.

This picture wasn't so blown out so I turned down the highlights some more and it made for a more rainy/grimy effect on this photo. A lot of Mainland Chinese people think Taiwan looks "run down" because back in the Mainland, you are used to seeing modern architecture. However, the reason for this is because Taiwanese people actually own their property as opposed to the government owning the property in the Mainland. This allows the Mainland to do as they wish with property around the country in order to modernize it. They are free to demolish old looking buildings to build new ones. In Taiwan, it is far more difficult because families can live in their own home for generations and the government doesn't have as much power to just say "we are going to demolish this building and there isn't much you can do about it. Please leave by xyz date."

The "run down" look is pretty cool at times, except if you have mold problems...

I also really like the vertical signs that they put on the buildings that reminds me of Japan. They don't put signs like this in the Mainland.
