The unpropitious powder problem

avatar

An error of judgement. A mathematical miscalculation. A bloody stupid mistake! It doesn't matter how I try to define it...The unpropitious powder problem has left me in the unenviable position of potentially running short of my medication. My pills. No silly, I don't mean medically-oriented pills, I mean freedom pills. Pew pew pills. Ammunition! I know right? What self-respecting preparedness-advocate allows such a travesty to occur? I'm shamed.

I shoot a lot and so have to make a lot of rounds (ammunition) which means I need to have a good supply of the wherewithal to create said ammunition, the pew pew pills. I usually make sure I have ample supply of (gun)powder, projectiles, primers and brass (cases) and that I always create more ammunition than I will need so I can put some aside for future need, whatever that may bring. I put 25% of the rounds I make each session aside for the future. I have a healthy stockpile of rounds and considering I do this for my rifle and handgun calibre's you can probably guess I have a lot of rounds stored.

I shoot around 200-400 handgun rounds a weekend, give-or-take, so I'm always churning through my store of components, including the powder. Here's the thing though, I neglected to factor in that the powder I use for my 9mm rounds, AP70, is indeed discontinued to be replaced with APS650. The problem is that I only have no AP70 left and the APS650 is not yet available. See the problem? My 9mm ammunition production has come to a grinding halt through lack of powder.

This causes issues.

I could dive into my stockpile, there's a few thousand 9mm rounds there of course, which is what I'll probably do, but with no timeline on the arrival of APS650 powder it means I could potentially find myself in the horrific situation of not having any left.

Fortunately I have some good mates, and a few calls around the place has meant I have scrounged almost half a kilo of AP70 from their stockpiles. They were loathe to relinquish the powder of course but I made them an offer they couldn't refuse...Don't even ask what lengths I had to go to ok?

I think I'll be able to facilitate the unpropitious powder problem I have put myself into through stupidity, at least for a while anyway. I'll have to shoot more accurately to save rounds...Maybe, and I'm not committing to this, I'll need to shoot a little bit less. Hmm, hurts my brain just saying that! Unless you use pew pew pills you probably won't understand what I'm getting at...Hmm, what example could I use to convey the same emotion...Ok, here goes...Imagine I took your mobile phone or computer away from you every Friday night at 5pm and didn't give it back until 9am Monday...How do you reckon you'd go? You think you'd be happy or would you feel odd, uncomfortable and a bit lost.

Ok, maybe it's not exactly like that for me but you get the gist. Oh well, it's my mistake and I'll own it. I'll probably dip into my stockpile of 9mm rounds and all will be well, I hope. I'll be fucking livid if the zombie apocalypse begins and I haven't got enough 9mm though! I'll have to resort to...Other options.

Haha! Well, to be honest it wasn't too hard at all...Nothing freaky has to be carried out. They donated it free of charge however I know what that really means...It means, "listen here asshole, you owe me for life for this tiny amount of powder I've given you!" So yeah, no stress. 🙄

You've been trying to get out to the range for a long time. You better make it happen before you go bonkers from not shooting. I normally go bonkers after about 1 week of not shooting...😁

For me running out of ammunition isn't really a big deal but there are those in the world for whom it is. I've got some good mates and a reasonable stockpile. Crisis averted.
