Sunday Ramble: Making a Better Plan + Using Google When You "Lose" Posts

avatar

Someone asked — somewhere in a comment, I forget where — whether my recent relative absence from these pages was an indication that I was yet another "regular" who'd given up on this gig.

Nope, sorry... not going anywhere!

But I am having to make a "better plan," for my time here. Now that both Mrs. Denmarkguy and I are working full-time from home again, I just can't give entire days of slack time to cruising around looking for posts and checking people's feeds. At least not like I used to.

I have to have a lot more "purpose" in what I am doing, and pretty much set some firm limits and boundaries.

And that will include some definite time limits on this little adventure. Unless Steem get back up above $1, I can't justify it... since we barely make ends meet as we are currently living. Let's face it, last time I had a post pay out more than $10 was on May 1st, and that only happened because I got one of the elusive and somewhat random @blocktrades upvotes. And that's basically like winning the lottery, and absolutely not something you can base your grocery budget on!

RE-Finding Your "Lost" Posts...

This will be my 1073rd top level post since I started blogging here.

It sometimes annoys and frustrates me that I can't categorize my posts and create my own archive and "directory tree" by subject matter, but this venue is really more set up to function as a "newsfeed" than as a "resource library." The fact that I try to mostly create "evergreen" content is perhaps a bit of a waste of time in this environment... but I don't really care, as I am basically here to practice and explore my writing. HOWEVER...

When I try to find specific old posts, it becomes extremely frustrating and time consuming to scroll and scroll and scroll, but thankfully we have Google, which I frequently resort to when I know I wrote a post about a topic, but can't exactly remember what I said, nor when I wrote it.

All you have to do is Google your username, the word "steemit," and then a couple of words you think were in the original post title... and the Great Big Oracle will serve you up what you need, with about 99% certainty, I have found. It's much faster than any other approach to finding old content.

Try it! You'll save a ton of time...

Meanwhile, Back to That "Better Plan..."

The reason I am looking at old posts these days is that there are a number of topics I have started writing about in the past, but never explored in depth.

With all these new tribes springing up all over the place, it seems like there will now be more opportunities for creating "tribe specific" posts and essays that actually would add value within a specific group.

Yup, there I go again... even as I have passed the 2 1/2 year mark, I am still concerned about adding value here. Maybe I am just doing that for myself, as the number of manual readers and curators seems to steadily drop. But hey, this is my blog, so I can do what I want to.

Right?

Anyway, I am still being pretty picky about tribes and what to stake... which leads to...

More Tribe and Token Thoughts...

At least from where I am sitting, it feels like the new Steem-Engine based "tribes" and their attendant tokens are kicking a little bit of much needed life back into the community! Maybe that's a dose of "wishful thinking" kicking in... but I am not so sure; I'm seeing some "familiar faces" engaging a bit more resolutely, these days.

I'm sure there will be lots and lots more tokens suddenly showing up in my Steem-Engine wallet, but I am pretty determined to not get spread too thin.

As I already mentioned in my recent "Tag Soup" post, there are already people who have started just listing every conceivable tribe as their tags, completely disregarding the correct tagging of their actual content.

It just makes me sit here, shaking my head.

I'm not sure whether people are incredibly desperate, or just incredibly greedy. I suppose it all becomes a bit of a test of our resolve, and our ability to stick to our principles in the face of most people doing something else...

Thanks for reading, and hope you had a great weekend!

I tried Google search before, and like you said, really 99% found it. About the tags on tribes, I guess most are naive and "just follow" without knowing what is the main purpose of each tribe. But as time goes by, they will find out? We do hope Steem price will increase, as that will make life better. As of now, we do need to wear alot of hats.

You're definitely right about wearing a lot of hats! So far, I am being pretty particular about which tribes I stake and whether something that merely "sounds good" will actually be a groups I'm likely to stay interested in, in the long run.

Well my dear friend, let me help you out a little bit with that extremely frustrating and time consuming scroll and scroll and scroll task.

This tool may well not be still perfect. But could be useful to find specifically any of all your old posts and maybe promising as a good/clean start to backup, control & classify your great content contributions for the steem blockchain along all these years of frustrations, blood, sweat & tears. ;)

Ok my friend. First of all click here. Then, once there in the website, simply write your steemit username in the space which says "Account" and click the "Fetch" button. Wait a few minutes until the full list deploys, scroll the list until the bottom, click again on the "Download" button... and Voila!! all your posts inside a .zip file in its way to your PC.

On other hand, if you just want to find a specific old post you are looking for. Basically using and also filling properly the "Tags" field would suffice.

So, having said all that. I guess you now are ready to kick some serious asses across all those picky tribes you are gonna chose asap.

Cheers!! :)

Wow! Thank you for sharing that supremely useful tool @por500bolos! Works really well because it displays as TEXT so you don't have a memory overrun and all that nonsense. This will certainly make it LOT easier to find things!

Not sure how much asskickage I will be doing... but at least this will make things a little easier!

And as for your asskickage very soon... Don't worry! just frown Cranky Gandalf style a little more and you are done.

Great info.!! Anything is better than feeding the Evil Google Manipulation Machine. I Copy pasted your directions. But unlike The Googlies I will not profit from them. :-p

it would be nice to see this platform evolve to the point that we could organize our posts. Having said that, the same problem exists over on Medium where posts earn for life. They have offset that problem over there by allowing people to create 'publications'. They can be a group of people or just yourself and allow content to be sorted into topic areas.

It's probably going to be hard to code that utility retroactively... a short term workaround might be to allow us to create a "tag cloud" on our feed pages... far from perfect, of course, but better than nothing. It's not as easy a proposition as it might look... it took me years of fiddling around with Blogger tags to finally find ways to display archived blog posts in a "sensible" way, and even then it included dozens of hours of formatting tags on old posts to make them accommodate a specific format.

agreed, on the best of systems it is difficult to organize content that is readily found. That is where SEO, evergreen content and good search engines help.
