The Right to be Sad

Hello, @adsactly readers

This is the last month of the year. December is a month full of music, joy, food and many colors. Christmas and the arrival of the new year create a festive atmosphere in almost every corner of the world. However, surely if we make an inventory of the things that have happened in this 2019, many people will think that there is more negative balance than positive; but they will prefer, to maintain the festive and hopeful spirit not to clash with the time and not be accused of El Grinch of the group. The idea, apparently, is fraternity and love; sadness and unlove is uncomfortable, annoying.

In recent years the fashion of a positive current has prevailed in which we must all remain happy and with a smile not only to ward off adversity but also to face it. It seems that maintaining a good and optimistic attitude is the cure for all the world's ills: from curing diseases, preventing hair loss and the appearance of wrinkles, to reaching longevity and health. Advertising states that by being happier and keeping sadness away, we will become more sociable, friendly beings with whom everyone will want to share, because it seems that sadness is trouble, especially if someone else is sad.

I think extremes can be dangerous. While it is true that I am a person who tries to see the positive side of things, I think that you can not control or hide emotions, especially if it is done to look good with the environment, ie at the mercy of our own mental health, our spiritual peace, we can not hide emotions such as sadness, anger, helplessness, hopelessness. Negative emotions are also part of us and if you try to shut them up so that they don't come out, at some point they will be able to come out before the less suitable people and perhaps in unimaginable proportions. Emotions are like repressed water: if you don't let it out, it can cause a flood, a tragedy.

There is a story by the Venezuelan writer Carlos Villarino entitled Represa that talks about how a woman who had never fought with her husband and after having endured years of infidelity, disloyalty, mistreatment, one day decides to leave and the husband, when he goes to look for her to tell him why he left her, finds this vision:

Her face was in her hands. Gerardo insisted that he calm down, but his cry was an explosion in the middle of the cafeteria.
I just want to know how long you've been unhappy, woman? Since when have you kept those tears?
The woman lifted up her face and said, confident, tired, empty:
Do you remember when we met, Gerardo?
The man nodded, looking at her from the front.
Well, since that day.

In these brief lines we see how one cannot keep the pain for so long and how one cannot pretend to be well also for a prolonged time. Sooner or later, that feeling will come out. If something sad or unpleasant has happened to us, it is normal that we are afflicted and suffer. Nothing happens with it. This does not mean that we should remain in pain and suffering. What it means is that we must allow ourselves to cry and free ourselves from that negative emotion in order to move forward.

Even though we are in December, there will surely be people in our environment who will be particularly nostalgic, heartbroken and soulful, either because they are so by nature, because they hate this time of brightness, or simply because they have had a terrible year.

In Venezuela, for example, we don't have much to celebrate this year. Thousands of families will surely not be able to make the traditional dinner, they will not be able to decorate beautiful trees, they will not be able to buy new clothes and many of the family members will wish each other a happy new year through a video call or a long distance call. In short, regardless of the mood or discouragement we may have at the moment, the important thing to remember is that we are not robots and we don't have to be well all the time. It's worth crying, breaking down and being weak. Let's leave superheroes for comics and happy endings for soap operas.

Well, we also do have the the Right to be Happy :) And its best to learn from the kids - they don't need a reason to be happy.

LOL. Yes. I believe that human beings are an accumulation of emotions and feelings. The idea is not to repress them or deny them. The idea is to live them, to demonstrate them, in their just measure. Thank you for your comment, @sanjeevm

You have summarized the situation for venezuelans quite well. I am going to be struggling to keep up the spirit. One thing that makes this xmas more dramatic for us is the fact that most of the countries that have allowed other venezuelans to migrate and get jobs etc are now having all kinds of social and political turmoils; that is ruining the plans of many.
I think that even though we have to struggle to keep our mental and emotional health, this year's end will be particularly hard.

Like you, I think this year leaves us with a negative balance, @hlezama. It's going to be hard to maintain the festive and celebratory spirit of the time. I aspire, the only hope that sustains me, that next year will be better in everything. A big hug for you.

Very wise reflections, @nancybriti, in my opinion. I'm not a supporter of those unilateral or one-way visions that see everything in a positive light, like a big party. I think that the human spirit is extremely complex, and that, therefore, its feelings and emotions must be accommodated. One of them is precisely sadness. Psychologists talk about "living in mourning"; the father of so-called "profound psychology", Carl Gustav Jung, said that we had to face our shadows. Poets have always known that. Thank you for your post and greetings.

When I wrote, I remembered you, @josemalavem. I think there are people like you who keep a spirit so far away from the spirit of Christmas, but this year will surely not be so happy, even for those like me who try to see happiness in everything. Let me hug you. ;)

It's so sad that the situation in your country is not being resolved but then much of the world is in turmoil! It's good to face troubles head on and one should not pretend all is well when it clearly is far from well! Here's hoping you can at least still have celebrations even if it's not on a grand scale!
