🌈Fortpflanzung ist das Ziel │ Reproduction is the goal 🦋
Kleines Nachtpfauenauge ■ Small Emperor Moth
Saturnia pavonia (Linnaeus, 1758)
Field photograph of a copula of the small emperor moth . But if you think the moth is sucking on flowers, you are completely wrong. This moth from the moth family Saturniiade does not like flowers and nectar. As a moth, it does not eat any food. In its life, which lasts only a few days, its only goal is reproduction. The female is lazy in flight and attracts the males with a pheromone. The males can smell the scent of the female up to three kilometres away. They then fly to the males to reproduce. After copulating, the moth only lives for a few days. The female lays her eggs on the stem of a food plant. Once all the eggs have been placed, the female also dies within a very short time.

In this photo I had released a female from breeding into nature and put her on a flowering blackthorn. It did not take long until the first males became aware of the female. A wild commotion arose around the female. Everyone wanted to fertilise the female. The following somewhat tousled male finally succeeded. To observe something like this in nature is really fun. My pupae for the spring are now in hibernation. In April I hope that some females will hatch again and I can release them into nature.
