Malven-Dickkopffalter ■ Mallow Skipper

Carcharodus alceae (Esper, 1780)

The Mallow Skipper is a butterfly of the family of Hesperiidae. The butterfly flies in two generations from May to September. It colonizes very warm low-nutrient grasslands with rose plants, from which the caterpillar feeds. The caterpillar hibernates in one leaf and pupates next spring. The male has a special behaviour. In resting position it lowers the body and lifts at the same time the rear part. Why the butterfly behaves like this is not yet clear. Unfortunately, this butterfly has also made it onto the list of endangered species. It is classified under the category 3 as strongly endangered.

Nice description and absolutely amazing macro 😮 this pic has some kind of edition? Those white particles?

The white dots in the background were created by the stack of 36 images. The effect could not be seen on the individual images with the different focal planes. From my point of view it was a happy coincidence, but I really like it.

Omg, i'm been doing some macros with the reversed lens technique and i'm always struggling with focus.. now you just gave me this awesome idea to get different layers and combine them, but for this i really need to shoot with tripod and command. Thank you 😁😁

This image is so magical 😍

Absolutely gorgeous. What a shame this species is endangered.

At first glance I thought it was a moth. What a pity, I hope it's not because farming has killed it's main source of food or the plants where it lays its eggs. These days, they're finally letting grass grow in meadows here, and some along the roads. I wonder whether its cause they realized they've combated species like this to extinction themselves .. by they - you could get a hunch who is responsible for overcleaning road sides.

Mowing roadsides and especially forest edges is a big problem everywhere. Modern machines make it possible. However, using whatever is possible is a bad decision. Many insects lose the possibility to hike. They are dependent on corridors with which habitats are networked. Unfortunately, simply don't understand how important such habitats are.
