International Health Passport In Final Stages of Development

Right now the International Air Transport Association is developing a new health travel pass that is going to assist in streamlining information about passengers and their COVID-19 history.

For example, once finished the app is going to display vaccine or testing information etc about that passenger, that various government agencies will be able to access around the world.

That health passport is supposed to be in the final stages of development right now and would eventually be a digital passport mobile app that could be used for travel purposes. They want to ultimately get people back to their airports and traveling again around the world.

Early this year when numerous countries went into lockdown it effectively drove down travel rates by more than 90 percent.

They want the app to possibly replace the current quarantine restrictions that are in place. Already there have been a variety of COVID-19 related restrictions introduced for travel, along with the closure of borders for non-essential travel. This has meant that often times people need to quarantine for at least 14 days when going to a new area. Travel is still heavily restricted for non-essential travel purposes, which is why several organizations are working to race toward developing this new app for the industry.

"In the immediate term, that means giving governments confidence that systematic COVID-19 testing can work as a replacement for quarantine requirements,.."

This isn't the first app of its kind to be developed, there are competitors out there that are working toward solving the same issue for airlines.

One of them is already being adopted by several airlines this winter. That list of airlines includes Virgin Atlanic, Lufthansa, Swiss International Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue.

That other app or travel health pass that works in a similar fashion, is known as the CommonPass mobile app, which also aims to share traveler information with different government agencies.

But are these travel health passports going to be enough for different regions to open up their borders again? Already the travel industry has lost billions and thousands of jobs have been lost. The airline industry, cruise ships, and dozens of other industries, are just waiting to see when they might be able to return to doing business as usual again. There are also privacy concerns about who can access the information and how the information is ultimately being stored.

Multiple surveys have displayed that people around the world are longing to travel again, but the potential for travel is not be coming anytime soon since many regions are now in their second lockdown for the holiday season..

Pennsylvania was one of the last states to offer that Real ID, (as if the old ones weren't). Without one, there will be a small list of places that you cannot go, that I can only see expanding over time. Starting in October, 2021, it will in effect, become a national identity card.
