Swan Lake Fire update and a rainy picture

Today is Monday, it is still raining. That is good, it will help put a damper on the Swan Lake Fire, and maybe one day soon we will be able to get up there and take a look at the results. Here is a link to the: Swan Lake Fire Fact Sheet 09/16/19 10:30. With the rain yesterday and a few sprinkles not to long ago, they now have it at a Containment: of 48%. Still a lot of smoke, so still hard to breath at times.

My wife spoke to a few people that have seen some of the results of the fire, and it was good news. total devastation to the area they all said. From what they have said it is easy to see the destruction caused by the fire from some of the roads. I will be happy when I can go and take a look and see for myself. I think it is actually good they let the fire just burn and tried to only protect property. It was caused by nature, and fire is one of the replenishing sources for many species.

I hope to be able to get some nice pictures when we make it up into the mountains. I think that they will be a nice contrast to a few we have from before the fire, and possibly a chance to see the new burst of new growth and life in the area next year. So as not to dwell to long on the fire here is a picture I got on Sunday, the one I tried to get of the fall colors and trees changing just did not come out focused well enough, I don't know if it was shaky hands or the heavy rain or the low light conditions, but it was not a good enough picture to post, so on the way home we pulled into the wood carvers place.

He does a lot of carving year round, today front and center stage was this nice sculpture of a salmon. He is located just outside of Soldotna, Alaska. He has a pretty nice looking merry-go-round of carved figures: a moose, a bear, a salmon, a caribou, a walrus or a mountain goat, and yes it is a working carousel, I think I posted pictures of that last year or the year before.

So Sunday was a wet one, good for the fire, not so good for me trying to get first fall color change pictures, but a nice carving taken from inside the dry comfort of my vehicle.

I hope that fire is put out soon! I have a good friend who has spent most of the summer up there fighting that fire. Some of her stories are quite harrowing. I'm glad it's raining; that should help quite a bit. I am also curious to see the results. It sounds like there's been quite a bit of devastation. I hope the smoke clears up soon!

It has been a very long fire, They are closing in on 50% containment, hopefully it is out before the snow falls. One of the real dangers for the fire fighters I guess is what they call ash pits, where all the dead and decaying leaf and small branches have built up and then burn forming a solid looking surface but is really a hole filled with still possibly burning stuff.
