ย ย ย ย ย A positive attitude is among the best medicines known to man. While we don't enjoy city life, Paramaribo is our home for now as we adjust to life in a strange new land. We dream of a quiet life in the countryside with a small house and a garden someday.

ย ย ย ย ย When we feel down and out, dehydrated and exhausted from lugging the children and bags around all day and waiting in government office queues, we simply look out the bus window for some inspiration. We always find it, and spirits are lifted for a fleeting moment.

ย ย ย ย ย Here in Paramaribo, Suriname, our public transportation system is not the most user-friendly system in the world, but within a country not much larger than Cuba, and whose population is barely half of Kingston's, it's an impressive feat. There are no share taxis like in Jamaica or other parts of the Caribbean. There are buses that run a series of fixed loops all over Paramaribo. Cost is $ 1.85 SRD ($0.25 แดœsแด…) to board.

ย ย ย ย ย Suriname is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, if not the most multicultural. There is no better place to see the influence of the various ethnicities, religions and cultures on Suriname than the artwork and text adorning the public transportation here.

ย ย ย ย ย I have begun to admire many of the slogans, idioms, expressions and self-help messages displayed on the buses of Suriname. More often than not, the driver privately owns the bus. While the driver must run a set route and charge a price set by the government, drivers take the opportunity to display their favorite celebrity, singer, sports star or Bollywood actor on the back of their bus, as well as a slogan, idiom, proverb or even a bus nickname.

ย ย ย ย ย These buses aren't as heavily adorned as you will find in many other countries around the world, but some of the messages are very powerful. Below are some glimpses of what you can learn about life while commuting in Suriname traffic.

The message is simple here, and this is transportation for the masses, so why not simple self-help for the masses. Is that blood dripping from the top of the window? This is is also the first time I have seen sticker curtains. I don't know what the PD represents, as well as the mask, but white cowgirl's soft skin looks as though she may not much about the struggle. There is so much going on here. Getting too Suriname has certainly been a struggle for us, and it isn't over yet. Life is a struggle, but don't ever give in or let anyone draw you out.

ย ย ย ย ย Not every bus is doling out free self-help messages. Some, like this one, want to promote their own brand. More often than not, these buses are privately owned by the driver, and you can hire them after hours for private trips. Having an easy to remember bus name can go a long way. Besides, Fantan Mojah fully approves. I can't say I understand "Iem Sabie," but I know "sabi" means "to know" in Sranang. Look closer and you will see some bald eagles and American flag banners. How did those get in there?

ย ย ย ย ย If you carefully read up top, this bus is "The Rule Breaker." I would agree with that, as putting Shakira on public transportation is definitely breaking Rule Number #1 - Only Reggae And Bollywood Star Stickers May Be Put On Public Transportation. Suriname can't help but take a little influence from its Latin neighbors. Okay, so Shakira isn't exactly imparting conscious life messages. I just wanted to show you not everybody can always have good taste.

ย ย ย ย ย We all need a little balance in our lives. This happens to be a bus we catch often to go downtown. No mascot is required on this bus other than a pair of eyes and BALANCE. Perhaps this is a reminder the self is not infinite. The only things impermanent are balance and infinity in this time. Would you also believe the driver of the bus is a well-rounded individual?

ย ย ย ย ย I can speak from experience, the interior of this bus needs lots of love. However, the badge up front totally makes up for the interior. You've got "We Run Things," two lions, one Akshay, two checkered flags, an endangered species, palm trees and a logo from the Palm Beach County Fire Department in the USA. It doesn't stop there, Akshay is chilling at a waterfall, and his ring says BOSS. I have so many things I need to ask, or aks, Akshay.

ย ย ย ย ย The point is love, nothing more. Take time to love a little more in life, and not only commuting will become more manageable. If you can't find it in your heat, borrow some from Akshay.

ย ย ย ย ย I've always admired this bus and finally got a chance to take a photo of its sponsor. Every time I see the chief downtown amongst the traffic and chaos, it causes me to pause a moment and think of living in nature one day. Perhaps a house, a land, transport, the dream gets big quick. But I mentioned earlier we need balance in life.

ย ย ย ย ย Well I only noticed Mr. Tophat Skull when looking over photos, and thought it was in stark contrast to the chief. I google translated "wauwshe, and it came back as Swahili for "kill them." Now it's "kill them chief" I think when I see this bus. Balance is what we all need. Peaceful pensiveness and violent rhetoric, what could be more balanced?"

Thanks for the shoutout man. I never would have thought someone could post an interesting blog about bus graphics, but you really pulled it off! :-)

ย ย ย ย ย I was trying to hold off on this post for awhile; there are plenty more buses with better designs than the ones we ride every day. But I somehow thought I would share the thoughts that pop into my head when I see the backs of familiar buses that we often ride. You've been a sage on my steem journey, thanks for all the tips and advice.

these buses remind me of Mexico, but they were more music themed, well the ones I saw were. If I had on it would say 'Embrace Change and Let Life Flow*. I didn't really know much about Suriname so thanks for the wonderful info, it sounds like a really interesting Country xx

ย ย ย ย ย Thanks for the feedback. Suriname is a mysterious and overlooked corner of the world. It feels more like South Africa, Indonesia or India than it does South America or the Caribbean. I thought the variety of bus designs was a good way to showcase the multicultural life here.

Interesting how you made content from messages on bus and your daily life commuting. Content is everywhere. LOL Fantan Mojah would be so proud. Well If I had a bus running on the road ( somebody would have to run it for me and I give them a percentage, ship a hiace bus over from Japan and put a meter on it) I'd put "unwavering faith, good times ahead" with palm trees and blue seas art lol

haha... COOL post, @justinparkes! :) Especially appreciated you finding something quirky and interesting to share when it would be SOOOO EASY to collapse into a rant about government offices and queues.

Shared to the @c-squared curation community for you too. :)

ย ย ย ย ย Of course, thanks as always @ecotrain & @artemislives for you curation and recognition. I feel lucky as a newbie to have so many wonderful communities behind me. I do feel a bit of pressure now to provide the best content I can. Some of us perform better with a fire under our butts, and I am one of them, so thank you. A positive attitude can alter realities.

Definitely some interesting artwork! I missed the sticker curtains until I read the caption below, haha. I think Shakira still pops up on the radar every now and then, but I didn't think enough to warrant a bus graphic. I'd have to think about what I want on my bus. Probably something like "Eat Plants & Move Your @$$" ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

ย ย ย ย ย Eat plants & Move Your @$$!! Fair enough, motivational and a little intimidating. I haven't taken time to think about a potential bus moniker I would use. Perhaps "Nuff' Vanity". I'd have to put Vaughn Benjamin on the back, as he is the most underrated conscious reggae artist for the last 30 years.

Thanks @joanstewart, I haven't been too Steem-active lately, but our offline life has been very busy. More and more though, with the mixed Indian-African heritage and the Dutch language, this place feels a bit South African-esque at times.

I don't know a lot about Suriname except it is a poor country. This post of yours made my morning! It is so positive! I also like travels & I find it interesting how you noticed these details on buses. I also admire you traveling with your whole family! I wish you all best luck on your journeys! ๐Ÿ˜‰

ย ย ย ย ย Thank you @careassaktart. Well, coming from 10 years in Cambodia, we are quite excited about the upgrade in quality of life. To us, Suriname is a very wealthy country full of citizens with cars and houses. That being said, it's not comparable to western Europe or the USA as far as standard of living. All in all, it's the perfect balance of standard of living and cost of living. Suriname is off the radar of international tourism, there is much potential here, where as other countries in the Caribbean are all played out.

WoW! I didn't know that either! It would be interesting to visit the country! Is there a dark / negative side of the coin?

ย ย ย ย ย Considering the ethnic diversity and variety of cultures here, the food is surprisingly terrible. The Indian, Chinese and Javanese food here are all some of the worst I've had in the world. Vegetable and fruit prices are relatively high compared to the cost of living as well, but the country is very safe. As chefs, we look for opportunity. Considering the high food prices and cheap land costs, we are considering abandoning the restaurant business and getting into farming. @sreypov and I both have a background in farming, so we'd handle the transition quite well.

Well maybe "kill them" is like in the way of the dj or mc killing em all ;) Yes all Bollywood movies and generally Indian movies as the best are actually the locally produced ones in the south will have a Boss as the star who can fight, dance, and lip sync with the best of them including Milli Vanilli. Actually, lip syncing is the norm there. Positive and interesting messages on the buses do make the journey go better and especially the waiting time, as well. Seems I've heard of some places in Africa, Lagos, Nigeria I believe, where they pimp out the minibuses big time :) Do they play music on the Surinam buses as well?
