Not all ideas are great...

"Not all crazy ideas are great but all great ideas start off CRAZY"

I heard this quote in a podcast and thought it was brilliant.

So often, the great ideas come from the fringes. They are unexpected and generally seem like a bad idea to start with. They are the exception.

First They Ignore You, Then They Laugh at You, Then They Attack You, Then You Win

On the flipside, if everyone thinks an idea is a good one, it's time to start worrying that it's going to fall flat. Consensus breeds average. It breeds the unexceptional.

Nothing truly great comes from consensus. It comes from those who are willing to think and speak against the grain. To zig when everyone else is zagging.

Above all, I think the true courage comes from being willing to float those crazy ideas in public. To raise your head. So often, we will write off any ideas that seem edgy for fear of being mocked. We bury them away before even daring to air them. It's from our ancestral 'herd mentality' - the need to fit in and not be rejected by our group.

So next time you have an idea that seems edgy or little bit crazy, it is time to get excited. You might just be on to something great…

Reminds me of the time this businessman went in our national talk show in the mid 80s. He told the host he was going to bottle water and sell it for cash money. He got laughed out of it. The whole country thought he was mad.
