Snows, SMTs and the coming Spring

Let it snow, SMTs here we go.

so, the SMT testnet is up and running, something I think many people have been waiting to arrive for a couple years at least.

While I don't think they are an immediate panacea for all things challenging Steem, I do think that as developers come to terms with how they can be used, they will proliferate. While still on Steem, each token can carry its own rules of how it operates and how it is distributed and hold configurable attributes that can be used to complement the users.

I am hoping that in time they will be used to tokenize the Internet and make crypto much more human friendly as they integrate into websites and communities that already exist. I reckon they could be used to gamify and help make a popular website more dynamic whilst simultaneously onboarding users into the mindset of crypto, blockchain and content and experience ownership.

I think that if the developers are able to apply them well and if a few decent communities are able to integrate them early enough, a strong crypto bullrun would see a great deal of interest across all crypto projects, especially those who offer new users a chance to earn without having to go through all the learning curve of crypto that most current users did. The more that this happens, the faster the adoption cycle rolls and the quicker that critical mass point is reached that tips crypto into mainstream usage.

It is going to be interesting to see how the dynamics of all of these projects change as mainstreaming happens over what I suspect will be the next five years, as I do not think that even the most well supported projects really understand how bit it will play.

At the last bullrun the entire market was still valued at under a trillion dollars (not that everyone would ever be able to sell at the ATH prices) and the world went "crazy" with BTC and Ethereum getting mentioned daily in mainstream news and finance media. A trillion dollars is a veritable drop in the ocean in regards to how much investment capital is out there already and if coupled with a crash, who knows how much is going to poaur into Bitcoin and other projects.

At some point, the Big Boys will be over bought and then the over-spill will begin into projects that have some utility and ability to offer something unique in the market, something leveragable. Steem is one of the very few projects that offers more than speculation and, with SMTs having the ability to quickly and hopefully easily tokenize pre-existing websites, it will be a highly sought after blockchain from both a developer and investor perspective, and then user growth follows.

What I am hoping is that Steemit Inc are not just working on SMT code and hoping for people to use it, but there will also be a toolkit, instructions and support on how to integrate Steem for blockchain newbies. The smoother and easier it is to get an SMT -supported website up and running, the more people will climb aboard.

I am hopeful.

Oh, this is a post for #inktober "Snow" and since my last posts weren't about Steem at all, I thought I should add one, since my drawing is a bit crappy to stand alone. wWhat I am hoping is that soon the crypto winter will thaw and the sun will start to shine on Steem so that it can grow many new branches in the crypto Spring.

I've gone grey and got fat since SMT were first announced. Hopefully I can soon afford to buy some Just For Men, and a gym membership.

Just For Men

A gay cruise?

Yeah, it has been a while, but at the same time I do not think there release in the last 18 months would have helped much at all. Maybe now there will be some industry hype to piggyback on.

Lol, I’ve seen enough open bar receptions that end up turning the ymca into some perverse interpretive dance that boggles the mind..

I agree, they could well have fluked the timing very well :)

I always wondered why steemit.inc never created a facebook-like comment section that could be placed under a article and delegated something like 100k SP to major crypto news sites to reward commenters.

That seems like a no brainer to me.

Now we expect SMTs to create a value proposition for websites when steem itself could have done it.
It will be interesting to see what it does to the price but tokenizing each website could have been done with steem itself.

but tokenizing each website could have been done with steem itself.

Not really as each would then be bound by the entire Steem blockchain rules. SMTs can act independently and be customized for the needs of their use case. A game might want a different set up than a forum and, noe would want their tokenized website to be at the mercy of the entire staked community.

Yes. But you have to acknowledge that creating a economy from scratch requires effort and a lot of thought. For a website that isnt introduced to crypto, for a crypto website that cares only for eth, btc, xrp, spending time to create an economy for its users via SMTs is too much.
They wont take the time.
If they wanted they could create a erc20 and do the exact same thing. And erc20s are much more known.

No. If steemit.inc created a facebook-like comment section to implement for lets say CCN and delegated 100k to them, that would require nothing from them. No work. No nothing. Just pressing the upvote button for engagement.
That would drive traffic and engagement what those sites need.

That would bring in so much more then SMTs ever could.
Still... Maybe SMTs will do wonders for the price but i still think that this would bring so much more towards utility. Magnitudes more.

Consumer experience and ease of use is king.

Anyone could have created that in the last 3 years, it doesn't require steemit Inc at all for that. I agree that having plugins would be great, which is why I mention tools. I would like to see SMT plugins getting created for WP, Joomla and all other website builders and CMS'

But they didnt. Steemit.inc is really the only dev team that has enough resources to make it "a thing".

Im not sure about what utility SMTs will bring outside what steem-engine did and what other smart contracts already could.

Hopefully Steemit will create another SMT for their own interface so that it could lead by example of then potential of the new economy that could be created.

I am hoping for the same. I'd like to see some showcasing for marketing.

Hi
That’s an intriguing idea. Please explain what would that look like and what would the use case be?
Thanks

I see it just like another Tribe like SteemLeo or Palnet which they can use to distribute rewards actively. If they are able to create value with it, it would reduce pressure for them to sell Steem for their funding and could use the SMT instead.

I see, in what ways will SMT be different from SE Tokens?

No difference except that SMTs will be more decentralized as they are on the main blockchain protocol whereas SE is like a sidechain.

We will see how it all plays out especially with steem-engine tokens that is already giving steemian preamble of how tokonizing steem looks like

Yaba was saying he'd like to see Steemit INC focus next on developer toolkits.
Couldn't agree more. We're a long way from drag and drop, but if we can get it out of the scary-sounding blockchain realm and accessible to the broader developer community, that's the sweet spot.

The toolkit is a make or break point I think and if Steem can become the everyman's development blockchain, it will do well.

I am also hopeful too that the crypto winter will soon clear and the sun will shine for Steem to blossom. The road may be rough and unforgiving but we will overcome. Cheers!
