Trump And Healthcare For All

Do you remember David Letterman? I really liked watching The Late Show now and then back when Letterman was presenting it; there was something about his unpolished character and dry humor that really got to me.

David Letterman stopped hosting The Late Show (not to be confused with The Late Late Show) in May 2015, and Stephen Colbert took over in September that year. But this short post isn't about either of them: it's about Trump. Three months before retiring from The Late Show, on January 8th 2015, Letterman had Trump as the guest and I just wanted to share that episode with you today, dear reader. It's January 2015 ans Trump is still claiming in this interview that he doesn't have any plans to run for president of the U.S. That's remarkable in itself, as it shows quite clearly how unprepared this narcissistic game-show host and real estate businessman really was. And it shows how he approached his run for the Oval Office like any other business deal in his life.

Whatever else you think about Donald Trump, the man can sell almost anything, including himself. He sold the American people the idea that the country, still recovering from its largest economic setback since the Great Depression, could be fixed if only its leadership made the right deals with the right people. And in his sales-pitch to the people watching he made sure to stress that these deals shouldn't be made for personal gain, but with the benefits for the American People in mind. I can't imagine how betrayed many Trump voters must feel by now, when it's so clear that he really did approach his run and presidency like any other business deal; benefiting himself and his family and not giving two cents about the people. The part I'd like to focus on starts at the 5:58 minute mark in the interview, when he and David Letterman discuss their experiences in other countries that have healthcare for all...

Trump specifically talks about the wonderful experience he had with the Scottish healthcare system. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and has the National Health Service (NHS), a government run single payer healthcare system where healthcare is free at the point of use. And Trump loves it. At least that's what he said and seemed to believe before he started his efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare. In the interview Letterman even points to the fact that many Americans still believe that free healthcare is tantamount to socialism, which Trump immediately waves away, saying "people are scared of a lot of things". Remarkable. But watch the entire thing; it's only 15 minutes and a stark reminder of how fake the current POTUS really is, how little substance his remarks have...
