Free College For Billionaires?

avatar

Yes, free college for billionaires. And yes, they get to participate in healthcare for all too. It's sad to see regular people on the political left react just like politicians on the so called political left...

There are Democrats and other "leftists" who argue that free college for everyone is a stupid idea and too expensive. They even go so far as to say that it's unfair to make college free for the children of billionaires. Hillary Clinton said in 2015 when she was still counting on becoming the first female POTUS: "I'm a little different from those who say 'free for everybody.' I'm not in favor of making college free for Donald Trump's kids. I'm in favor of making college free for your grandson by having no-debt tuition." (source) Now doesn't that sound reasonable and just? Maybe it does at first sight, but it becomes plain stupid after a few seconds thought. Politicians in general, the "professional" ones (corporatists), constantly make use of the people's ignorance, and always set them up against each other for all the wrong reasons.

A good example of this from the other side of the spectrum is the Republicans' often used argument of paying of the national debt. This is so stupid to even want to do that, but they count on the voters' immediate reaction in which they compare the national economy to their own household. How often have I heard right-wingers ignorantly say that it's easy to run an economy: you know what your income is, you know what you spend, so it's easy to balance your finances and not create debts. This argument only shows that you don't know the difference between your personal household and a national economy; cutting expenditures will hurt income in the national economy, while it won't affect your income as a private citizen who works for a living. And that's besides the fact that with debt-based money, your debt grows with the amount of money existing in the economy: debt IS money, it's not an unfortunate coincidence that the richest country is also the one with the largest debt...

Back to the free college though, because Hillary's argument also counts on people's tendency to make things personal; it's counting on the understandable (but ultimately erroneous) reaction of people to think and say "well, I'm not gonna pay for some rich brat to enjoy free education!" Really, we need to let go of our carefully manufactured and overemphasized individuality, and start seeing things from the perspective of the society in which we all participate. Think about that free college, and think of it as a basic and UNIVERSAL human right. Just like roads or libraries; would you exclude billionaires or their kids from using public libraries and roads too? As soon as you start making exceptions to a right that's supposed to be universal, it's not universal anymore, which is the start of its downfall.

Some so called progressive Democrats use the same argument against health care for all and claim that its not fair to take away people's private insurance if they choose to hold on to it. And they make sure to emphasize choice, because that's something we all want, don't we? No, we don't, not when it comes to basic rights for everyone. And everyone includes the billionaires. The strength of universal programs is their universality. If we ALL pay, if we ALL contribute, we're ALL invested in its success. In case of a single payer healthcare system there IS NO CHOICE but to include EVERYONE. Because if you go for attractively titled programs like Pete Buttigieg's "Free healthcare for all who want it", or one of the many "public option" programs suggested by other so called progressives, you keep intact the middle-man's power to drive up prices, and the private insurers will keep the healthy people and let the ones with a "preexisting condition" flow to the public option, making it even more unaffordable.

The building of a just society goes a lot further than only insuring and protecting individual rights, and needs strong support for protecting universal rights that benefit everybody. A lot of the disappointment many people experience in life has to do with the demolishing of any sense of community or shared destiny that's been done in name of capitalism on steroids; they feel let down by their own society as it's simply not there to catch them if they fall. One final remark about free college for billionaires: when classrooms are filled with children from all economical classes, that's the best thing that can happen! It's good for society for all income levels to get to know each other's lifes, and it's good for social mobility to get to know some people that aren't on your level.

I sometimes hear that the progressive left blames billionaires for much of the world's troubles and that we should stop complaining so much about them... This completely misunderstands the critique, and disregards all the whining billionaire snowflakes do themselves every time someone threatens to increase their taxes or take away their subsidies. When Bernie Sanders tweets that billionaires shouldn't exist, he doesn't blame them, but critiques a socioeconomic machine that creates such immense wealth and income inequality. It's time to change that and welcome the billionaires and their children in our midst. It really is all or nothing, there are no grey areas when it comes to basic human rights.
