Lockdown Essential Services Only

With most of the world currently in some kind of a lockdown to prevent the further spread of the Wuhan Virus, most governments are only allowing essential services. The question then is, what exactly is an essential service, and essential to who, and lastly who determines what is essential to others? It's almost like that scene in the matrix when Morpheus asks Neo,"What is real?"

What you determine essential is maybe completely different to what I think is essential, the governments across the world and here have decided what they deem essential on our behalf. Which is basically only healthcare and food, and have have outlawed everything else, movement, work etc. The problem is that for most people around the world can not eat if they cannot work. Take the USA as an example, and keep in mind they are a first world country, statistically 80% of people do no have more than $500 in savings, what do you think the entire continent of Africa looks like?

"The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

Essential does not equal more valuable. Every job, if supported by the market, is essential to the economy, because if there's a willingness to pay for that service, then that service is valuable to someone. But in our current condition, "essential" refers to necessary to sustain life. It's debatable how much of our economy should be shut down, and for how long. Of course some precautions is prudent to reduce the impact of Covid-19, but the shut-downs are impacting not just the short term quality of life, but also long term. The point is, that people need to work in order to eat, both those things are very essential, and governments don't get to decide what is or is not essential to people. There a reason we have human rights, and those rights are not forfeit when there's an virus outbreak.

Below is a great take on this entire situation by The Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort, on the governments actions during the outbreak.
