Yes, Our Water Comes Out of the Tap "Green"

I had a toilet issue the other day that required me to collect 5 gallons of water from the shower. What I saw surprised me. The water was a turquoise color.

I've known for some time that there are a lot of minerals in our water, including added chlorine and fluorine. I just wasn't expecting it to come out "green". We get our water from Detroit, the same as Flint Michigan.

I put my nose up to the green water and gave a big sniff. It does have a distinct odor. Not bad, but slightly chlorinated.

We Filter Our Water Before Drinking

This is the water we use to shower, bathe and wash our cloths and dishes. But we don't drink it before using our Berkey water filter.

We fill the top chamber with tap water and it slowly filters down to the bottom chamber. We usually keep ahead of demand by filling a second container of filtered water. This is what we use to drink or make tea or coffee. If we use unfiltered tap water to make coffee, it just doesn't taste right. Not at all.

We Do Not Trust Unfiltered Municipal Water

The most resent report from 2017 shows everything in normal specs. But there has been scandal in the drinking water for the suburbs around Detroit.

Water Source Health Guidelines

Water is sampled from around the country and where we live, the tap water was many times higher than their guidelines. Technically, it's legal. But it's far from ok.

We can only hope that the Berkey is filtering well enough to make our water fit for consumption. Meanwhile, this green water is used for everything else.
