Civilization's Fall Begins with Moral Narcissism

We Live in Crazy Times

Driving around the neighborhood, getting a feel for how things are locally to me, I've been seeing these signs occasionally in front lawns.

I go to work for you, please stay home for us!

While at first glance it sounds good, "wow" I think, "those frontline workers are saving lives." While I'm sure there are many exhausted doctors and nurses, it's not because of any virus. They're exhausted after all that dancing!

Moral Narcissism

The definition of Moral Narcissism comes from the two words, Moral and Narcissism.

Moral is the judgment of right or wrong of human action and character.

Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's idealised self image and attributes

Moral Narcissism is self gratification in admiring ones own judgment and enforcing of a self-determined right or wrong. It's judging others as morally inferior if not adhering to certain practices considered in their own mind as good, while not necessarily following those practices yourself. Defining yourself as "good" by your beliefs, not your actions.

Like Narcissus of Greek mythology—mesmerized by his reflection in water, the handsome hunter gazed longingly upon his image until he died—human beings have always been susceptible to the psychological malady we call narcissism. Distinctive to our era, according to Simon, is a special form of the general personality disorder. In the case of "moral narcissism,” he writes, “What you believe, or claim to believe or say you believe—not what you do or how you act or what the results of your actions may be—defines you as a person and makes you ‘good.’” The incidence of moral narcissism, he contends, has reached epidemic proportions. Signs of Moral Narcissists

Have you heard any of these quotes? Then you've been exposed to moral narcissists.

"It's selfish to not wear a mask"

"stay home to save lives"

"not maintaining social distancing is practically MURDER"

"we're all in this together"

"we can return to normal once there's a vaccine"

None of these are original concepts, they've been inserted into the human psyche by the media and online sources. They are artificial slogans that will be remembered associated with the year 2020.

Why do People Become Moral Narcissists?

It's because "knowing" good from evil for ourselves is very self-gratifying. It does lend superiority over other people who are not as enlightened. This "knowing" seems good, pleasing in our own eyes and oh so DESIRABLE... for obtaining wisdom.

Sound familiar?

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. Genesis 3:6

This is the answer to the age-old question of why people are narcissists. People have declared themselves "good" based on their moral beliefs. Based on their judgment of there who are not as "good" as them.

The Tree of Life: His Knowing

We've all inherited Adam and Eve's sinful nature, but there is a way out. A way that leads to life. It may be guarded by a flaming sword, it may require a lifetime of trials and testing, but it is worth it. We cannot eat both from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life at the same time - but we can seek the ancient path that leads to life.

Man shall not live on bread alone, but by every word proceeding from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4

Blessed are they that keep his commandments, that they may have a right to the tree of life. Revelation 22:14

On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22:2

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who wins souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30

Am I Being a Moral Narcissist?

I just quoted a bunch of bible stuff at you, now do I think I am morally superior to you? Am I now the Moral Narcissist?

Not at all.

I am like the poor man on the street, coming to another poor man on the street, telling him where the food is. It's free. It's good. It leads to life. It doesn't promise to be easy, but with diligence and discipline, it will reward beyond anyone's imagination.

The fear of God is the BEGINNING of wisdom, it's a long journey to the end of the road.

Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin

We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.

No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny

Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations. Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books.

It's probably a mistake for any of us to consider ourselves above such flaws as moral narcissism. Humanity has common traits, and some of us feature some more than others, but all of us are human.

Best to grant our critics have some basis for their complaints, and work to reduce it.

Yes, we all can fall into this moral narcissistic trap. I agree, we are all fallible. Best we can do is be aware of it, acknowledge our own shortcomings and do our best to do better.

Do you think it is self-rightousness akin to being a modern-day Pharisee?

Social media spreads this toxic narcissism.

Yes, it's like modern-day Pharisees. They lay heavy burdens on others, but don't lift a finger to help bear the weight. Social Media does offer a platform for all kinds of behaviors - it's a playground for narcissism.

I don't mind a little dance. Those things can reduce stress and help people psychologically. But most of these are highly choreographed. I mean how do these morons find time for them if they are saving lives. I feel very iffy about the quality of "medical" care given at these hospitals.
