Our Little Homestead Helper's First Harvest Of The Year

Our Little Homestead Helper joined me in the garden the other day. She helped out for a little while but soon got bored with pulling weeds and spreading leaf mulch. Besides, there were cattle gates that needed climbed!

I guess if I were still small enough to sit in the gate like that, I'd do the same thing. Instead, I continued my work in the garden while she played. It wasn't long, though, before she was back and asking what everything was and if she could pick anything. Well, t just so happened that we had a radish or two ready to be harvested, so I coached her through reaching and grabbing just above the root; wiggling it around to loosen it out of the soil; and finally giving a good tug to pull it free.

I have to say, she did an excellent job. I guess we'll have to pull the rest of the plants from that group in a couple of days. I'm pretty excited about what we're going to try making...

STAY TUNED

I am encouraged when parents let their little ones help out. The time and effort you invest in your little one now will have a lasting impact.

I agree. It's getting harder and harder to instill work ethic and responsibility in kids (or people in general, it seems) in today's society. It makes me happy that she enjoys hanging out with me outside. We just came in from some nighttime bug hunting. lol

Thank you for the thoughtful comment!

Lovely! We didn't manage to plant much this year (only a few squashes and we will get tomatoes later on). The covid situations made us too busy with our jobs :(

Thank you! I hope it was a memorable time for her.

It doesn't take very many squash or tomato plants to keep you stocked up. Throw out a couple of cucumber seeds, and you'll have lots of veggies going!

The problem is that in our case, this requires to prepare the soil. We added tons of it last year to level, and now we are dealing with our jungle, little by little. I plan to be ready for next year. ^^

In the meantime, we found a reasonably nice solution: we have a nice herb garden, and for the rest, there is a place where you can go and pick anything you need, for a decent price (reasonable agriculture, without having the 'organic' label that is actually pretty hard to get).
