GROUND BROKE FOR THE STOREHOUSE AND MOVING STONE~~A HOMESTEAD UPDATE
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
For those who haven't been following, we just recently started the process of building a homestead with the dream of becoming self-sufficient and not reliant upon anyone for anything.
The first step what's to purchase a piece of property that was suitable for a farm with crops, an orchard, a garden and some livestock including birds such as chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys. We recently made that purchase and have now started the process a shaping the land to support us. We are doing this a manner that prevents changing land any more than necessary.
We have been working on clearing a small section of the woods where we will build our home. We are also doing a few other things in preparation for when we start. Which leads us to where we are today...
BREAKING GROUND FOR THE STOREHOUSE
This picture was taken shortly after a size was picked(approximately 14'x8' or 4.25m by 2.43m) and a basic line had been cut in the soil. It was a late start to the day and we only progressed a few inches into the dirt. This is in large part due to the massive amount of roots because we are in the middle of the forest. And also because of a considerable amount of rocks due to the cliffs that are below the soil. But by the end of the day we had accomplished a bit.
THE NEXT DAY
We returned to work and dug a bit deeper. The digging is getting easier as we have dug through the root/rock later and have hit soft clay. At the end of the day we had made it to about 18 inches(0.5m) in several places and at least 6 inches(0.25m) at the shallowest.
STILL NOT TO DEPTH
We will need to obtain 3 feet(1m) of depth to set a proper footing and ensure that it is deep enough to not freeze. So we have a little bit of work left still yet. This will probably take another day of work to accomplish and we will then be able to start building the stone walls.
THE STOREHOUSES PURPOSE
Other then the obvious use of storage long-term, this stone building will serve as Evan, my son's, clubhouse/house. It will also allow me a warm place to hunt from and enable me to stay at the homestead for extended periods of time to work. This will save me a lot of gas money and wear and tear on our truck. It will also make a great place for a camping base. It will be very versatile in it's uses so an invaluable asset to the homestead. So for now it has precedence over many other projects there.
THE FIRST STONES WERE MOVED
The first stones to be used for our actual house were pulled from our creek today as well. I will be removing some each time i visit the homestead to work because to build the house it is going to take a massive amount of stone. So rather then kill myself doing it all at one time, I will do a little at a time...like our friends the ants. I only moved one partial truckload today and it felt great to have started this part of the process.
Thanks for continuing along on our journey to self sufficiency and homesteading life. We truly love all the support we are receiving and send our love and happy healthy vibrations your way in return.
If you've made it this far,why not enjoy a few pictures of one of our newest friends at the farm...Harry Opossum. He climbed up on a log while we were taking a break from digging and was checking us out. So i went and introduced myself. He was very friendly and seemed as interested in me as i was in him. As a matter of fact he let me walk right up and take a few pictures without even being frightened.
*Harry playing hide and seek. Do you see him?
*Taking a moment to enjoy the beautiful sunset...
*Ready for his close-up, so he can by a #newsteem star!!!

Lovely to see the homestead coming up nicely. I've been trying to fix up my shoebox home. Just managed to get the lights and one fan installed yesterday....
Lots more to get done.. furniture being the most headache.
