Introducing a Community to Help Support Home Educators.

(Edited)

I've been procrastinating for some time now, but finally took the plunge. We now have a discord and account for homeschoolers and unschoolers. Introducing @HomeEdders, with huge thanks to @lordnigel who has provided the Steem account and @pennsif for the moral support.

It's very much early stages and will likely be slow moving, after all, homeschoolers don't have a lot of free time. However, I want to see more of a support network for homeschoolers here so I hope we can build this.

In the current climate, homeschoolers and unschoolers don't always get much support, despite the fact that it is becoming more and more popular. It's also only natural that we will second guess ourselves when we do something different to the mainstream.

Yet more than ever we have the resources at our fingertips to be able to educate our children and, indeed, ourselves. Free online education resources like Khan Academy are of such high quality that even schools and universities use them to help students learn.

I hope that this can be a community where we can help lift and support one another in our journeys and share experiences. So whether you're a homeschooling parent or someone who was homeschooled, please feel free to join us on discord. This is very much in the first stages and all constructive feedback and suggestions are welcome.

I've taken the liberty of tagging all the homeschoolers/unschoolers from the @altlife list:

@mysticlilly16, @ryivhnn, @wildflowerjessi, @ashtv, @radicalpears, @redrica, @apanamamama, @canadian-coconut, @crosheille, @hippie-witha-gun, @ironshield, @papa-pepper, @ginnyannette, @nancymoral, @wholeself-in, @bpangie, @squishysquid, @homesteadhippy, @tecnosgirl, @bowentroyer, @thefarmerswife, @sumatranate, @gregorypatrick, @dreemit, @fiberfrau, @saturnme

This is a sorely needed asset for parents, who are not only undertaking the uncharted course of parenthood (kids notoriously come without a manual), but also taking the positively amazing route of homeschooling - which was the SOP until kids needed to be separated from their families so the adults could work in factories a few centuries ago.

Most parents have suffered government indoctrination, er..., I mean public school, and have a hangover of believing deep inside that sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, meaning that it was good enough for them, and their kids should suffer too. It ain't so, and the encouragement and broader support from other parents on that journey can really help to relieve the panic and self-doubt that most parents experience when nothing seems to go textbook perfect, and their particular munchkins are apparently uniquely not suited to independently grasping reality.

When I suffered such angst, I just remembered 1) the stick is the greatest toy, learning tool, and precision instrument ever created, 2) my kids are smarter than me, and 3) I literally could not do worse than public school. Whatever problem I had faced was then solved using the magic of the stick, by my kids, who then taught me the solution.

Honestly, nothing teaches a parent more better than teaching their kids.

Thanks!

We have been so conditioned to think that one way should be the only way. When someone asks me

Are you certified to teach your children ?

I pull out there birth certificates and say

I’m more than certified, I was chosen to teach them.

Okay I really don’t pull out their certificates but you get the point. It’s funny that we’ve been trained to think we are not capable of teaching our own kids. We are the best teachers for our children and no one knows them better than we do. Great points you made above.

I love learning from my kids and I have learned so much about myself from teaching them. And it’s a second chance for me to learn the things I didn’t get in school. I’ve had so many ahh, that makes sense now moments. 😅

Funny and so true! Isn't the goal for the student to surpass the teacher, after all?

For thousands of years we existed and evolved without pubic schools, but now we aren't capable or competent to teach and have to send them to school? It's rather like we're having to unlearn certain things.

It is always nice to see people make up their mind to help others who are in dear need in any way they could. Am glad you made up your mind, leave procrastination and take up the mantle. Wishing you all the best.

I want sure whether I could take it on alone, but was confident, in the end, that others would step up to help.

My kids are grown, but I love the idea of this community! Great job and great use case.

I have had the privilege of connecting with a lot of homeschoolers (all who are on this list) since I joined Steemit back in 2016. I have always thought it would be nice to have us under one roof to better connect and I’m glad to see that happening.

Parent educators definitely need support and encouragement along the way. A lot of us have similar reasons for homeschooling and some different. Either way this will be a wonderful opportunity to share some of our journeys, struggles, victories, tips and resources so that we can all continue being encouraged and inspired to remain steadfast in what we are doing for our children.

Thank you @minismallholding for taking on this challenge and for the personal invite to join in. I am here to help as much as I can and look forward to seeing this community grow :)

A real pleasure to have you on board.

Yes, there are so many different and so many similar experiences that sharing can only help benefit one another.

Ahh so you're behind the mysterious new entity I'm about to disappoint as I only do homeschooling posts once a month if we're lucky XD (and right now I'm still a month behind aaaaaahhhhhhhh >_>)

Slow is good. Because time what's that XD

Do you have plans for this account or is that what the discord is trying to work out? :D

Yes, 'tis I! 😆

I feel like the discord will be the main working out area. I feel it's very much a support network that most need. The account will be an attempt at financial support and creating more awareness on Steem. I want it to be of the community and for the community, so any ideas and thoughts are welcome. At the moment I'm just curating manually anything homeschool, helpful to homeschool and supporters so far. I'll probably set it up on autovote for those helping out and/or delegating. I need to get on a desktop first, though, because I'm struggling to do certain things from my tablet.

Please include my wife @bridgetmartin in this. I've been wishing she would be more active on here. Maybe something like this will help motivate her. Thank you for having this.
