Being More Professional

World record of over 50 m for a throw in.

When you are coaching a club whether it is football or basketball it doesn't matter as long as you provide the best expertise and training that will ultimately improve your team. This is the aim of any coach and sometimes you have to think out of the box in areas where others don't. These areas can lead to nothing but can also be exploited to create something out of nothing.

Most clubs will have similar drills and training methods which will make players fitter and sharper, but then again if everyone is doing something similar it is like a stalemate. There are only so many things where you can improve on and this is practiced over and over again until there is perfection. Practice makes perfect is what everyone says and there is no replacement for repetition.

I was reading an article about Liverpool and Red Bull Leipzig employing a throw in coach and thought that every team would have some thought or input regarding throw ins. Apparently not as it is a piece of the game that just happens and nothing has been done with this set piece.

Possession is critical so why wouldn't you spend time on this and try and perfect the art of throwing in. I am not talking about a long throw in but your every day bread and butter throw in that happens during the game. How often do we see tams throw the ball in and it is a 50/50 situation whether you get the ball back. Surely the thought process should be to at least make it a 90/10 chance of keeping the ball or even 100 percent guarantee.

If you have the ball you are controlling the game as possession normally stipulates that. Teams practice free kicks and spend time passing in order to keep possession and create opportunities so where is the difference regarding the throw in. very few teams have explored this side of the game and one ex player who holds the world record for the longest throw in with a football is now coaching 8 sides around the world.

Liverpool with all the stats people around have recorded 12 goals this season that can be directly awarded from throw ins. That is a high percentage and could be the difference between winning or losing a match. The last game against Wolves in the Premiership Firminho scored the winner from a throw in.

Football has progressed just in the last 10 years as managers regard possession as the key factor. If we look at how goal keepers distribute the ball today we see that they don't just kick the ball aimlessly up the field but they are aiming for a certain player in order to keep the ball. Pep Guardiola selects his keepers on distribution as much as defensive skills. In the past playing the ball back to the keeper was purely defensive and a last resort but we see it more and more today as part of the build up.

I was going to say, I don't feel like it is too often that you see throw ins like that because there is just too much chance for the player to get injured. That is probably the last thing a club would want.

He s just showing what is possible as no player would actually do flips to throw a ball in. hey are using him to teach players to be more accurate and to think more about retaining possession.
