Hive might not be right for Twitter (and the masses)

avatar

There's plenty of talk right now about Jack Dorsey's online pitch on the need for a new decentralised social media platform.

Here on Hive there's added controversy as we think we've already built it.

So this begs the question:

Why aren't the masses already here?

And therein lies the problem.

We can scream and spam Twitter to our heart's content proclaiming that we already have what everyone is looking for here on Hive - decentralised Web 3.0 social media - but I suspect many more would have already found it by now.

The reality is that this place is still a place for geeks. Geeks like us.

It is simply not ready for the masses.

  • Too techy
  • Too much explaining needed
  • Too complicated
  • Too long form (mostly)
  • Too few users (right now)
  • Too much talk about crypto (especially about Hive 😊)
  • Too hyper sensitive and political.

I live in hope that #projectblank or similar might break the mould and make us more accessible or we might have to just accept the fact that we have to remain as a "specialist sport".

There's nothing wrong with that.

We just need to decide what we want this place to be: niche or for the masses. If we choose the latter, we would have to fundamentally embrace a different feel, tech and content bias.

Those are my thoughts on this right now - what have I missed?

And I think that's because it's still too small.

Too small for now, Crypto is still on an its Early stage. People will most likely individually discover it.

We were once like these, when facebook first launched what most users only do was playing FarmVille, FarmTown, and Pet Society etc. socializing and posting their photos wasnt really a thing, considering smart phones was still young at those years.

This was 10 years ago, When I was just 13 years old lol.

Now when people starting to realize that Social Media could benefit also the community by tokenizing it they will find any ways to benefits for their own. Some of the users are now annoyed how ads interrupting their feed, and those social media platforms are taking users as an advantage to sell the users information/preferences to business ads.

Yes, it is a long and slow road but we've been going for a few years now if you include our predecessor... The time seems right, but I don't think we're quite right for it just yet...

Thank you, thank you and thank you. I've been saying this for years to no effect. We're writing for our crypto-buddies and forgetting about Google, Joe six-pack and Suzy soccer mom.

That's how we bring in the masses.

Maybe all we want is to be a tight little small club of like-minded people, but I'm hearing the opposite. We're talking about this (and other subjects) on LeoMarketTalk come on over and join in!

100% agree. It's a choice we need to make.

Will check out the link - thank you!

I don't like this guy. If he was such inclined towards decentralization, freedom of speech and non censorship on his platform he would have done something about that by now.

Also it may be that society generally isn't ready for a decentralized social media platform. People claim to want freedom, but underneath they'll accept control if it furthers their goals

You're right that right now the product isn't really ready for mainstream adoption. On the other hand I do believe Hive to be the biggest, most successful decentralized social media platform by far. NFTs are a good example, by the time the headlines around NFTs went crazy Hive already had some long-term NFT projects to stand on.

at least it's ready for early adopters to go all-in and use Hive as the primary social network of choice. it's not hard for a crypto-aware person to see the value in Hive at this point.

Too techy

Try getting a 'normal guy' to create an account. I've not been able to onboard a single person without personally setting up their account for them.

Too much explaining needed

They just can't get their heads around the keys. I don't know what the solution is for this. It's a complete mental paradigm shift being your own bank/account owner

Too complicated

Even if you can finally understand what the hell the keys are for, then you have to understand what powering down/up is, what an exchange is, why you can't just buy tokens directly with a credit card or something, and why you can't just sell the coins directly for dollars and send them to your bank account. Essentially, you have to not only understand Hive, you have to understand basic blockchain, exchanges, etc

Too long form (mostly)

We need more quality DAPPs that do different things.

Too few users (right now)

For all the same reasons above... Although, I'm am surprised that we don't have the mass majority of crypto uses here. We should have the entire crypto community on Hive. They shouldn't need to use Twitter and Reddit or wherever.

Too much talk about crypto (especially about Hive 😊)

OMG, I've been complaining about this for years. I have recently given up and joined in. Mostly because since Covid hit, I haven't traveled which is what my blog used to be about.

Too hyper sensitive and political.

This has been a complaint that I have, and have been very aware of but have always kept to myself. I do wonder how many people have come and left after seeing some of the attitudes around here.

Sorry, completely missed your excellent comment!

For all of the above reasons, I still don't bother to mention it to any of my friends or family until we can get at least half of the above points ironed out.

So close, yet so far...
