Follow Friday - Bits and pieces

The News

The crypto markets have settled down a bit after recent volatility. I try not to get too stressed about it. As most of my crypto is powered up $HIVE I cannot react quickly anyway. I know some people want a shorter power down time, but having it like this does promote long-term thinking and prevents people just taking a quick profit, as well as making it more secure.

Many prices seem to follow what Bitcoin is doing and I have find it is less alarming if I look at how prices shift compared to the biggest coin. You can select which currency you prefer to see on @coingecko.

Prices

$HIVE had been stuck around 1000 Satoshis, but has broken away now. For a brief period during the week it was equal to the $STEEM price, but then I assume some of their backers did some strategic buying.

There is a lot of $HIVE being powered down and sold. Those of us who believe in it should do what we can to counter that. Power up all you can to lock it away. That also helps distribute the rewards better. The next Hive Power Up Day is on Tuesday with badges and other rewards to be won.

Friday Followables

I will feature a few fellow runners this week. I have got to know people all over the world through Hive. We inspire each other.

  • @ervin-lemark is a dedicated runner in Slovenia. I went there for my job years ago, but did not get to do any running as I was not into it back then.
  • @run.vince.run is a triathlete in New Zealand. His fiance @run.kirsty.run is also a great competitor.
  • @king-cobra in Malaysia seems to run most days despite having to cope with the heat. That will make running harder.
  • @rthelly is a British lady who has recently tackled an 'ultra' in the Lake District. That is a real challenge.
  • You should check out the @exhaust dapp from @mstafford that can be used to blog your activities. You can import the GPS track from various apps or sync directly with Strava.

Acting for the community

I have been writing in these posts about various abuses of the Hive platform. We have downvotes for a good reason. They are a way to rein in selfish and greedy behaviour. I know some people feel it is wrong to take rewards away from others, but if nobody does this then Hive will get corrupted from what it should be.

There is no unique set of rules or overall authority to say what counts as abuse. You can make your own judgements. If you think it is productive then you can leave comments to say why you adjusted rewards. That is all a downvote really does. It is not 'violence' in any way. It can reduce reputation, but it generally takes a lot of downvotes to have a significant effect.

You can report or discuss abuse in the Hive-DR Discord. I know some people in there are a bit jaded by what they have seen, but they do care about Hive.

There is also @hivewatchers who check for various forms of abuse, including impersonation. In the absence of a central authority we need community efforts to check that people are who they say. On their site you can prove that you control social media or blogs for a given identity. That will prevent you getting on their blacklist. They will accept a temporary link if you are 'ashamed' to be associated with Hive. You can also report abuse on their site. I believe it is a very small team behind this project and they can get stressed out by dealing with everything. Do not be too hard on them. It is not like they are getting rich from this.

I am of the opinion that if you are being well rewarded by this platform then you have some obligation to help improve it. It should not be just about taking. Part of that is voting for others of course, but reporting or acting on abuse can make a big difference. If we can catch it early enough we can minimise the damage.

I will not taint whole communities or countries as abusers as I have seen some do. Hive is so small that just a few dozen people collaborating can do some harm. I think everyone should be welcome if they act in the interests of Hive and they will benefit by doing so.

The End

I will close here. I will say that I will be running off another #BritList next weekend, so further submissions of Brits, including ex-pats, are very welcome. I do keep running searches for them, but some slip through.

Hive five!

Thanks for sharing this! I try not to let the token prices get me down too much any more either. It just isn't worth it. I figure it will all come back eventually. Just need to be patient and wait.

I am happy enough if $HIVE is doing better than others. It needs to climb relative to some of the competition. Hope to see it at least in the top 200 soon.

I avoid looking too much at the prices.. since I don't do a lot of trading, it doesn't really affect me too much. I look every now and then to identify buying opportunities but that's about it
