Comment like Hive depends on it

avatar

I just saw @theycallmedan is launching the #HiveComments initiative in collaboration with @garybilbao and his @elcomentador project. This is something close to my heart. I posted a couple of times recently about this.

Logo

I see the lack of commenting on Hive as a real problem. If you are someone who only makes a few cents on each post then there has to be something else to keep you coming back. On other platforms you may make nothing, but you will enjoy the interaction you get. If you have worked hard on a post then you want some responses, even if it is criticism.

I am still in the top 100 for comments and even higher when it comes to replies.

Chart
From HiveBuzz

I am mostly voting manually and I do my best to leave comments when I vote, especially if the post is lacking in that regard. I also vote up responses I get as I have enough HP to give them some payout. Anything less than about 2.7c is burnt. I can give added incentives in the form of BEER and ENGAGE tokens.

Of course quality matters as much as quantity. Thankfully I have seen very little in the way of 'Nice post' comments. I know some people do not have much time to respond, but if you are posting then I think it is polite to respond to comments you get.

Advantages of commenting include:

  • Making connections
  • Getting your content seen
  • Rewards!

A healthy commenting experience is good for Hive. Be part of the improvement.

Hive five!

Man, that has to be all time comments because I really expected myself to be higher on that list than where I am. I feel like all I do is comment. I comment back on pretty much every comment that comes in on my posts. It's a freaking full time job. That is cool they are starting something. I will have to look into it.

Even if you just respond to comments on your own posts then that is something. It does eat time though. I need to limit myself really to get other stuff done.

I'm certainly trying to improve my commenting on hive, I'm actually starting to find more content that interests me recently as well so that helps a bunch.

I still a little short when it comes to being able to upvote comments and not have it burnt but I'm getting close. :D

It has to be fun for me rather than work as I am not making that much. Even if you cannot give comments a decent vote a reply is always appreciated.

I totally agree with you. I had not checked my rank in sometime, but I did today and was pleased to see myself 279. By the end of the year I hope to improve that and get above the 250 mark.

I think comments are a very important part of Hive. I know a lot of people have little time and their social commenting is done on other sites, but if a person were interested in growing their Hive balances then comments need to be made.

For others reading my comment, I started on Steem with nothing, I bought some cards to play splinterlands and that is really the only money I have invested in steem/hive so very little. One of the ways for people to find you and your post/blog is to go and comment on and vote on other peoples post. A vote really is not going to get a person from their page to yours because there are simply to many votes to look through. A comment is another story, they get read, if real, they get followed up on, if made on more than one post a month they get remembered by the post Author, and then curiosity kicks in and they make it to your page/blog.

After awhile of commenting you find you are building a real followers list, and that you may also be getting a real following. For the social side of Hive to Thrive, we need to leave comments and let people know there are people on Hive.

I think there are some old accounts above me that are no longer active, so I could rise a bit more. I have also spent relatively little on St++m and Hive. I am nearly an orca mostly from what I have earned. It can happen, but it takes work.

Granted there was the split and drop, and transfer of funds, but I am still amazed when I look at my account and see it getting close to 6500 HP. It does seem that the more you hold the quicker you grow.

Growth can speed up as you make more from curation. We do need more big accounts to spread the rewards better. Keep having fun.

Truth be told, I was lagging behind in terms of commenting. But as I get to understand Hive better, I see the need to engage and I'm improving.

Would love to see my ranking?😏

Your ranking is fairly low, but it takes time to build up. You can search for yourself on HiveBuzz and sort by each column. Find the content you enjoy so that it does not feel like work.

I try to comment as much as I can and I am part of the engagement league so it keeps me motivated what u don’t like is some people don’t even value your comments like they either don’t respond or just respond once and don’t try to carry the conversion which is the point of a post to spark a conversion sigh hopefully people will get it eventually

Seems like a lot of work to go find big accounts to comment on its not like they have the most riveting content I like to look for things I can give an opinion on and with all these tokens floating around in layer 2 you actually never know how much rewards you can get so comment on people

Totally in accordance with the advantages you mention, I also just read the terms of the initiative #HiveComments, certainly it is not nice when you do not receive either good or bad comments on your posts, I do not have much time in hive or enough voting power but I try to leave a good comment on the posts that I liked and this is done with the intention of somehow assessing that content and also to make myself known. This project @elcomentador comes to fill that void in Hive by giving value to one of the basic ways to make community when interacting with other Hivers.

You should have some Engage from me. Have you looked on Hive Engine? I can see you have less than a dollar. If nothing else you can sell them for HIVE to power up. Some you can stake (power up) so you earn more on appropriate posts for voting.

If cashing out your HIVE from Hive Engine it seems this charges less, 0.25% vs 1% :)

I have no idea how to do any of that. It looks like it will let me send via a memo to people and yes it takes me to a market but I have no clue what to put in.

Yes, I have the 50 Engage thanks.

Which bit is puzzling you? Hive Engine has an FAQ. You can buy and sell any token for their HIVE.SWAP, which is 1:1 with HIVE. Depends on someone wanting to buy it as in any market. I use it a fair bit to shuffle tokens around. Check the rewards page as you may be due some. I'm sure a smart businessman like yourself can figure it out.

Deary me: 8617 I'm way down the oubliette. 😟

What that chart does highlight is something that really ticks me off about Hive and really angered me when I was using Steem. Why is Cica a dolphin and I am not? My stats blow theirs out the water yet I'm a minnow and their a Dolphin?

This is why people get their arse in their hand on Hive and until people wake up and see this and understand peoples frustration the platform will never take off and will be accused of being a Ponzi scheme. #MrGrumpyToday

I don't know if you have heard, but the capitalist system is not 'fair' either. Talent is no guarantee of success. Who you know can be a big factor. I started as a nobody, but have managed to connect with lots of people, some of whom can give me a big vote.

One thing it is not is a Ponzi as that requires you to invest. You don't have to buy any HIVE, but doing so has advantages.

It looks like circa has bought a few thousand Hive, so that is a quick route to dolphin. They delegate it all to one of the curation schemes and earn from that rather than posting. The platform offers various ways to earn and I think that is good. Not everyone is a blogger or interested in the social side. If we can get more investors then there is a chance it will be worth more.

TBH, this is what I don't like about Hive. The explanation you gave of how they achieve this is not acceptable behaviour if you ask me and you of all people shouldn't accept it either! How can Hive be promoted as a Social Media platform with an emphasis on Community when in reality all you have to do is speculate and you can earn far more than those putting in the graft? Now I know you'll be straining at the bit to unleash: "Well that's how capitalism works! Rich people getting richer off the backs of the working class!" so I'm surprised you think that sort of behaviour is acceptable or at the very least shrug your shoulders and effectively say "It is what it is" I'm on the "Hard working families side and sit on the bench of "THE REWARDS SYSTEM IS UNFAIR"

As a side note: It seems to me, everything is geared towards encouraging people to use fiat to buy Hive thus artificially inflating the value. Those of us like myself who do not play that game seem to be penalised. That is the classic model for the foundations of Ponzi by the way.

Buying HIVE is optional, but there are some who prefer to go that way and that will be the main driver in the price going up. I have bought a few thousand I think, but that is still a fraction of what I have earned. The system is very open and anyone can check to see which accounts are buying or selling. I am not a fan of the 'benevolent market' view the Tories love, but in crypto it is what we have to deal with and it may help good projects flourish.

How is it 'artificial' to boost the value of something by buying it? That is how Tesla gets to be the most valuable car company despite producing far fewer cars than others.

What I like about Hive is that some poor kid with a smartphone in Bangadesh could post a cool picture or story and earn enough to feed his family. Okay, so it relies on ways to convert HIVE to food, but with a frictionless transaction system that may get easier. HIVE could be a convenient currency for some communities. Currently it seems that people who are already well off earn a lot of the rewards, but in time the distribution could improve. It is an experimental economy and we get some say in where it goes. I find that exciting.

Still not a Ponzi.

If some poor Bangladeshi can buy a family meal for $0.38 after paying exchange fees I'll eat my hat!
Put those rose-tinted glasses down mate.

Seriously, if this update goes the same way as the last Steem one did I'll stop posting and playing the active part you encouraged me to do. Now I'm not stupid, my staying or leaving has no effect whatsoever but I'd far rather have friendship rewards on Twitter et al than watching my efforts wasting their time while money speculators clean up on the Hive platform after insuring it was manipulated to increase their returns while others get fook all.

I know that some people in Venezuela have been able to pay their rent with what they make here. When monthly wages are $5 or less a few cents can make a difference. There will be people willing to buy HIVE as it has value to them. Local economies can bypass the markets and rates can be negotiated. I met a guy from Ghana a while back who was doing this. It is part of the economic experiment. I would think you would be in favour of such enterprise.

I have lots of friends on Hive and that is part of what keeps me coming back.

My dear, you are a reference in the art of commenting. In fact, that's why I contacted you that time and asked for your support. But as you said, you are doing a great job at Hive and, well, you are already supporting me in being a great commentator and making this Beehive a better place.
You have it very clear and the experience has confirmed it, your numbers certify it.
The advantages of commenting include:

Making connections
Make your content visible
Rewards!

That's exactly what I talked about in one of my posts. https://peakd.com/hive-133872/@garybilbao/5-razones-para-comentar-en-hive

Hi, @steevc
That's a cool tool I did not know hivebuzz had (to check different ranks).
I don't think I am anywhere close to any top selection, but I do enjoy commenting. I agree with your summation of the advantages:

Making connections
Getting your content seen
Rewards!

About the tokens you can give as incentives, how do you get to give them? if you receive them, what can you do with them? can they be transformed into hive/HP?

I love all these charts and stats. I got in early with St++m so my numbers are good.

Commenting is extremely important for community building @steevc, and I'm completely in alignment with what you're saying.

Although it is brand new, this "alt" account exists purely for curation — hereunder commenting — purposes, and is planned to be a sort of vehicle for engaging with content that isn't necessarily CAT related... even though LEO is a cat, of sorts. This is also going to be a 100% manual curation and engagement account. The reason I decided to do this actually precedes all the noise currently surrounding LeoFinance and is simply based on having enough LEO voting power to spread the wealth a bit around that platform, while not having enough HP to make much of a difference on Hive proper.

Which isn't to say that I won't still be putting a lot of effort into the original @curatorcat account. The post I read immediately before yours was from @nathanmars asking if we would still be here in 2025... and my answer to that remains a resounding "yes!"

I think this is really starting to build a great vibe on the platform now too. People are really starting to get to know each other. I've met and gotten to know a lot of people in a short bit of time through the Twitter campaign and that's leading to much more interaction on here.
