Half full or half empty

avatar

"Is your glass half-full or is it half-empty
Are you only having one or one too many
Are you drinking alone or having one more with me
Is your glass half-full or is it half-empty"

"Is your glass half-full or is it half-empty
Are you leaning either side of the fifty-fifty
Are you leaving alone or leaving here with me
Is your glass half-full or is it half-empty"

Faith and I went out with a couple of friends last night, had dinner and afterwards sat in the bar chatting about all sorts of things, as friends sometimes do. The bar, and nearby restaurant, was full of people, not noisy, but quite vibrant; We had a nice night.

On the way home around midnight a song started playing on Spotify by a band called Old Dominion, a country music outfit from the USA. Some of the lyrics made me think about perspective, the perspective people have in life and how it can affect them. The song itself is about a guy and a girl in a bar but the question asked in the song is what I pondered.

Is your glass half-full or is it half-empty

As it turns out one of the friends we were having dinner with is now on a mental health plan and having counselling. I won't go into it here but essentially her son and his wife have acted quite poorly towards her and denied her access to see their two young sons. It has been going on for almost two years now and she has struggled to cope with the loss and her own feelings, a son and grandsons also. She feels out of control and there is little chance of the situation reversing itself.

We each feel particular ways internally, for various reasons, and depending on the severity or import of those reasons (and scenarios), can begin to feel despondent, depressed or have a bleak outlook on life, and ourselves. It's at these times when we need to ponder the glass half full or half empty scenario and determine how the scenario at hand, and our subsequent feelings, make us feel; Indeed, what impact we allow them to have on our well-being, attitude and life moving forward.

Our friend is an intelligent person, works in a professional environment and has a lot of life-experience; But we are pleased to see she's taken the glass half full attitude and decided to get some professional assistance to address her feelings with the focus being on controlling the controllable things in her life.

We all have a choices to make in life and the implications that derive from those choices unfold throughout our lives...Seeing things negatively, the glass half empty ethos, can sometimes feel easier as it generally requires no action, ownership and responsibility; It rarely results in a vibrant and enjoyable life though. The alternative can be more difficult journey, but also more rewarding.

I've gone down both tracks over the course of my life although learned quite rapidly that there is only one best course of action and only one real choice for me and it has helped me control the controllable things plus design and create a life I am happy to live; My best version of it.

It's interesting what a simple lyric in a song can lead one into thinking and contemplating huh?

Half full is the only way to be. It is harder but hey, nothing that's worth something is easy!

By looking at situations in a negative light allows the situation to control you.
The opposite is true if you look at the hurdle in front of you as a challenge.
By facing a difficult situation face on, that approach will at least give you the chance to resolve the issue, and at the very least empower you.
If something is bothering you, get up off of your ass and do something about it.

Yeah, the old do something ethos seems more productive than wallowing in misery. Thanks for commenting.

Yes, it is quite interesting. Props to your friend for taking the initiative and seeking some counseling. Some people look down on this, but what better place to think things out then out of an office with a man/woman who you pay to keep their mouth shut. In the end, we are the ones who make the changes for ourselves, but for some reason it does tend to help to say them aloud. Probably something about bringing out the thoughts of our subconscious to re-evaluate them in the conscious mind, and then repeating that process. It's like giving our moral a tune-up, and having an observer causes us to do our best work on the engine.

I agree, it's the individual who makes the changes in oneself although sometimes having a roadmap to help guide one through that process can be good. These days mental illness is the new black it seems, it's almost fashionable to have a therapist although I think that there are many who genuinely need that passive ear to listen and a softly spoken voice to guide.

I'm sure I've been "glass is half empty" several times in my life. These days if there's stuff in the glass at all then it's fine because it's better than a completely empty glass XD

Unless doing the dishes in case I'd prefer it was completely empty ;D

I think some people find my attitude annoying

Situation with your friend sounds sucky but good that they're taking positive steps.

Yeah, one certainly doesn't want a half full, or half empty glass if doing the dishes, it would make it difficult to dry!

Yeah, she's doing ok. I still find it mind boggling that her sone (a once-friend of mine) could have done what he did. She's going ok considering all that and the counselling is the last stage to get herself ready to move on with confidence. Good on her I think.

This post made me remember that there's a (half full?) bottle of wine in the fridge that I can dig into after a Monday... don't worry, it will be accompanied with some left over squid-ink pasta that we made last night!

Hmm, looks like my post has had a positive effect on someone then. Enjoy the vino and pasta. Legit dinner for a Monday night. Just ordered a pizza myself, cooking isn't something either of us can handle tonight so...yeah, pizza it is. 😁🍕

Italian Mondays.

Perhaps you require an Italian massage to de-stress?

Just as in life, the glass is always full. It is a matter of what we choose to fill it with. In the glass shown, it is half full of wine and half full of air. What do you choose to fill your life with?

I'm a firm believer in the design and create ethos when it comes to my life so that's what fills my glass to varying degrees. It encompasses everything in life from the physical and material aspect to the emotional and mental aspects. My glass is always half-full of that ethos and the associated attitude....Everything else is a bonus.

Howdy sir galenkp! Very true and the friend is wise to get some help. Half full means no ownership or responsibility..you sure nailed that one!

I guess it's different for all of us and really comes down to the individual and how each wish to see their life.

Precisely and it's amazing how many people chose victimization and defeat instead of success and victory.
