@KidSisters 👭 Suriname School Update 🏫 The Good & The Bad 👍👎
At exactly 9:30am a horn honked outside our gate, and it was a neighbor informing us we needed to rush to the school before 10am to receive news on the fate of the @KidSisters' education.
👨👧 Away We Go 💨
Excited for any education-related news, I tied up my turban in record time and darted out the door with Sakana to find out the news.
Sakana and I maintained a light jog all the way to school, surprised to arrive at 9:45am somehow. We masked up per new rules and walked inside to meet Sakana's 1st grade teacher.
🐵 Monkey-B Goes To 2nd Grade 🎓
Her teacher informed us her 2020 "Rapportboekje" was finished and that she would be allowed to enter the 2nd grade.
Sakana's highest marks were in Arithmetic, Art and Culture. I should mention that anything less than a 6.0 is failing, so Sakana did barely squeak by in many subjects this year.
We paid 35 SRD (about $3 USD) for the 2nd grade school-year fees, collected all her used books from the previous school year and were reminded to return one textbook tomorrow.

🤐 Some "Niet-Zo-Goed" News For SreyYuu 😨
SreyYuu's 4th grade teacher speaks English fluently, so I was was saving most of more complex questions for her.
Her teacher plays by the rules 100%, so I wasn't able to pay the 35 SRD and collect her old schoolbooks without first returning her borrowed books.
She also informed me SreyYuu would be repeating the 4th grade, as her marks were too low in "Nature Education," "Dutch language" and "Suriname History."
I was a bit deflated to hear this, but I put my faith in the judgement of the teacher. It is a shame though, as SreyYuu had some good friends in this class that she will no longer be with.
As a non-Dutch speaker, the school system had already placed her one grade lower than her age last year when we arrived in Suriname, so now she will have a significant gap in the maturity levels of her classmates.
🧠 School Again Some Day ✍️
We were give the date of September 1st as the hopeful day school can start again as somewhat normal. That seems like ages from now, and the girls have already been out of school so long.
I would dare to say, based on SreyYuu's ever-increasing gains, if school would've never stopped, she could've made enough higher marks towards the end of the school year to barely pass.
Well, COVID-19 rules the world, so what can we do? The @KidSisters educational fate was determined only on what they had achieved in the first half of their first school year in Suriname.
💻 What They Don't Know 😕
Homeschooling was made an absolute necessity because of the public school failure to educate our girls in some way during the lockdown.
In the months that have passed since the Suriname public school system failed us, SreyYuu has learned photography, new recipes, blockchain and crypto skills, how to blog, tons of plant and biological knowledge, and much more.
This is why it's important for us parents to educate the kids on what's really important. Since the lockdown SreyYuu has learned how to support herself 100% financially (if she were living in much cheaper Cambodia) via Hive blogging.
SreyYuu, your Dad is very proud of you. You make an awesome tofu larb and your practical computer skills are better than most adults. You're also learning 4 languages: Khmer, English, Dutch and Spanish.
You will be so much smarter than your parents, believe me, and you'll have more passports than your parents too, if our efforts pay off one day.

It is a shame that the Suriname educational system could not have provided some sort of at-home learning support for children during the COVID event — hand-out materials or a syllabus at the very least, if not ZOOM-based conference. It is also a shame that SreyYuu's homeschooling advances could not have counted as "life experience" to advance her, grade-wise. 😕
But, perhaps this next school year will be even easier for her to excel, now that she has all that extra learning under her belt! 😊
It's also a shame they couldn't give you a little more advance notice of that meeting! 😮

It was a big let down for us, but a surprise that Cambodian filled the gap with a totally free E-School Cambodia app.
I was very let down they didn't pass her, mostly because she was improving exponentially by the week. I'm sure if they would've tested her in some way, she would've done good enough to pass.
Either way she's acquiring skills for this new strange world. Sakana, on the other hand, developed a strong bond with her teacher, so I hope the new one can build the same bridge.

Spirits are positive again now, and SreyYuu knows this place is not our forever home, so she's not too troubled by this info.
It's much more important in this modern world that she can lie to a consular man or customs officers with great confidence, as these skills will have a greater impact on her future opportunities.
Some homeschool links would be awesome. Everything I find from the Netherlands is high-quality, but never free. I'm not even sure I've found a quality free iOS app for Dutch yet, so anything is apprecialoved.
The VP is Ronnie Brunswijk by the way, so I am watching closely for a similar government style. At least the improved relations with the Netherlands and the USA might stimulate the economy, which could in turn help us.

Remember the of Suriname Country, remember the City of Nickerie. There are many Indonesian people who live in Suriname.
I heard that, and there are many in Paramaribo too, but I have never heard anyone speaking Javanese. I think they have taken on Dutch language and culture fully. Most of the Javanese here don't even know anything about Indonesia, very sad. The Javanese food here is terrible too, worst Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng I've ever had.
Suriname is a small country, located in South America, Suriname with a population of about 575 thousand inhabitants, Suriname is know as acountry of four continents, in addition to Javanese people account for 15 percent, there are also Dutch people, Africans, and Americans. Thank you.

The kids in schools close to me are luckily all without masks.

The masks and temperature checks are now required for school, so it's our only option if we want to give the kids a nearly free education.
But, as Cambodians, mask wearing is nothing weird. There is so much brake dust unregulated diesel smog, that you can actually feel it hit your eyes there. Most Southeast Asians have been wearing masks for many non-corona related reasons for years, so it's not a weird feeling for them.
I do wish it wasn't necessary, but we aren't even control of where we can exist as a united family, so we're used to having to having much less freedom than this. We've learned to drop the mask below the nose and do nose-only breathing anyways, something I've just learned recently is very healthy, as many people choose to breathe only through the mouth, which is not the healthiest method.
I've noticed my nostrils are working better than ever because the mask has forced me to do it, because after breathing through a mask for 10 minutes in the tropics, you'll quickly realize that's impossible long-term.
Yes, it makes sense what you say about Asia... they are more used to masks.
Still, the "trap"/trick is when the body gets less oxygen through mask wearing,
he acidizes and sends out more stress hormones, that might get you tested positive...

We have mandatory masks now inside any place. The bus an transit say that children 12 and under don't require them. There must be a reason for that but no one thinks that maybe it's not good for anyone to breed bacteria behind the muzzle face diaper then breath it into your own lungs. We have been going on the bus without one and usually we are the only ones. People give us dirty looks with their eyes and shake their heads. If the bus driver says something I will get off and walk. The drivers almost all don't wear them.
That's a real toughie for SreyYuu. While it's not a bad thing to take things at a learning pace that suits her, especially given the circumstances that she's starting at the beginning with some things, it can still make them feel like they aren't good enough when they get held back while their peers move forward. We all know what an incredibly intelligent and hard working girl she is from what she posts on here and it's not even in her native language! I hope she can also see that and understand that being held back at school is no reflection on her abilities and capabilities, as much as it may feel like that on occasion.
I've always told my youngest daughter when she started gymnastics later than most, your abilities shouldn't be counted on what age you are when you can do something, but on how long and how much you've been working on those abilities. Someone younger than you may have many more years experience in something than you have.

She hasn't been posting much lately for too many reasons to explain, but she is going to start doing her homeschool journal again three days a week for Home Edders. I'm just working on a more sustainable template now.

I have been so impressed with your children. They can beat out many kids that I know around here with their genius. I happen to be a fan of unschooling. I wish I were as bright as your kids when I was younger. In fact even now haha.
Funny you say this, because I have a funny story. There is a boy across the street with no manners, and he's full of Caribbean confidence and ego at only 7 years old. Unfortunately he's their only playmate, so I have to allow some interaction.
This little boy says the rudest things, and our kind little traditional Cambodian girls don't know how to respond to this Caribbean ego.
Well, the other day I saw the boy crying outside our house, and apparently it was because the girls "roasted" him Cambodian style after he talked too much trash. One thing Cambodians shouldn't be underestimated for is being able to make fun of you in a way that gets to your core.
We practice roasting each other all time, as I want to make sure they are quick on their feet. I've told @Sreypov if we ever get the chance to go the USA some day, she needs to be prepared for someone to cuss her out at Wal-Mart just for being Asian, so needs to have some quick comebacks on standby.
That was amazing hahahaha/ I love it so much. I wish I could have witnessed the scene with the kids.
I am kind of shocked that @Sreypov would be cussed at for being Asian. That happened to me in Canada years ago when I was a kid but now you can't say anything about anyone's race. I myself got in trouble at work with a verbal warning just for referring to a co worker as the black guy because I couldn't remember his name. If I would go to Walmart here I would blend in so perhaps it's different in the United States.

And the stuff they learned while at home has been highly beneficial even if it doesn't show up on a piece of paper :)
Yeah, I kind of expected this, but there was little we could do with zero communication from the school for about 4 months.
I guess that is life, hopefully it teaches them to be more resilient, and that know you can't even count on a government for an education.

Such different subjects they have in school there! Happy for MonkeyB going on to grade 2 and happy your kids have such an awesome dad that does homeschooling - I love SreyYuu homeschooling posts - looks like she is learning lots!
Yeah, some of the subjects translated to English have really weird names. I promise to have SreyYuu doing her homeschool journal more frequently very soon.
I think she's become bored with the format, so I'm reworking it to make it a little shorter and easier for her to complete in less time.
