¡Bienvenido! (11).png

¡Feliz día tengan todos! || ¡Happy day everyone!

As a classroom teacher I face at the end of each school year a situation that sometimes overwhelms me and that is the anguish of parents because their children, who will be promoted to primary education, do not know how to read and write, a situation that sometimes I find difficult to explain and precisely now during a school year that took place in confinement, with few opportunities to provide children with experiential situations for learning and the opportunity to interact with their peers, has made it more difficult to answer this question to parents.

In general, parents tend to compare their children's learning processes with those of other children, even ridiculing them when they are not able to perform tasks that according to their age should be done, which often fills the child with frustration and even crying, receiving from adults words such as "don't be a child, you will cry for that" "you should learn like your cousin" and so we hear endless comments that are not the most suitable for an infant.

It is then an arduous task to explain to parents how the reading and writing process develops in their children and when there should be a concern if there is no evolution in this aspect.

Generally, due to their lack of knowledge, parents demand more from their children than they can give according to their age, which generates a series of frustrations that instead of promoting learning are limited by the child's denial.

For a long time, the paradigm has been created that children are obliged to read and write at 6 years of age, that is to say, that when they enter elementary school they should have already consolidated these processes, which is why parents urge teachers to develop activities within their classrooms that promote these processes, Now, in early education, the curriculum is very specific in stating that during their stay in the children's centers the child should start each of the processes that will later be consolidated when they reach elementary school, of course, if the child has the maturity and interest in these processes, they will surely consolidate them at the age of 6.

Now, as every year at the end of the school period, parents enter into a kind of anxiety when they see that their children are not able to master the pencil to write correctly or recognize syllables and even read short sentences, they express the importance of these two aspects for what will be the success in primary education, in addition to this, they categorize teachers as incompetent for not achieving the consolidation of these two aspects of these students, which often generates some incidents within the institution where I work as a director.

I have always said that it is necessary to agree on what are the real elements that a preschool child needs to succeed in primary education here I will emphasize that pencil and paper does not define you as an individual on the contrary there are other elements that influence your school success and that most parents discard, because unfortunately our culture is framed in measuring intelligence by what you write, read and calculate, there is no room for anything else and precisely there lies the origin of my approach.

Simply put, the child who does not manage to be novel with his peers in the acquisition of learning will be seen as a problem student by his teacher and the valuation of his parents is sometimes cruel when they label them as "lazy or gross" and this is where my speech to them has always been the same:

"It is more important to teach emotional intelligence, to respect agreements and to be independent than to force our children to consolidate processes that are very complex and where their brain maturity influences arduously, this does not mean that the student can not be initiated in the recognition of letters, sounds and writing words, but what we must understand as parents is that punitive teaching does not bring good results for our children, we should not worry if our 6 year old child does not read or write perfectly, what we should do instead of blaming him or her for not being able to read or write perfectly, what we should do instead of blaming him or her for not being able to read or write perfectly, But what we must understand as parents is that punitive teaching does not bring good results for our children, we should not worry if our 6 year old child does not read or write perfectly, what we should do instead of blaming them for their failure, fill them with a motivating environment that according to their interests can be acquiring the experience to learn. We should not anticipate the processes everything should be with fluency and the security that being prepared will overcome the process of reading and writing.

Currently the school year is ending in my country and precisely have already come on my Whatsapp messages from representatives explaining me their concern about the lack of reading and writing in their children and the need for them to repeat the school cycle, before a pandemic year where children have not learned anything, certainly the confinement brought a pedagogical emergency that will bring sequels in the future in the student population, but as the days pass as parents we must remain calm, ask for guidance, read and even become that teacher that our child could not have.

The solution to the problem is not that the child repeats a school cycle, if not assimilate that to go to primary school is not a prerequisite to be a reader or writer, if not as parents have the constancy to give them learning opportunities without the pressure of a sheet, pencil and a book, because the best learning is not planning and that comes surrounded by the playful this last aspect is vital in children.

I hope someday to stop giving my end of the year speech to explain the above.

This is well written and a great fit for the more general Education community. This is a more specific community sharing experiences and knowledge to help parents education at home.
