Drooping Eyelids

Today, we going to learn a little more about the Eye lid and take a look at a common condition associated with the eye lid known as drooping eyes.

Introduction

The eye is the part of the eye we see when our eyes are closed. As the name suggest it is the lid of the eye, it covers and closes the eye when work is done. Not only that but it also closing the eye at the sign of impending danger or hazard so as to protect it. An action popularly referred to as blinking.

The Eyelid also has aesthetic qualities and this the Ladies exploit to enhance their beauty. The lid spreads tears across the eyes to keep it lubricated and to help avoid the condition of Dry Eye Syndrome. In situations like lagophthalmos when the eye refuses to close completely then the patient may suffer from extreme cases of Dry eyes.

Drooping Eyes

The eyelid has muscles which keeps it together and help it to function appropriately. The most well known and important ones are the orbicularis oculi which help close the eye and the levator palpebral superioris. The orbicularis is innervated by the facial nerve and they common condition associated with its dysfunction is the bell's palsy where one is unable to close the eye and may have to be surgically patched. The levator does the opening of the eye and it's innvervated by the oculomotor nerve and a lesion or dysfunction is what results mainly in drooping eye lids.

Drooping Eyelids may also come about due to weakening of the muscles within the eye lid as we age. Although this is a mild case of the condition it may still be noticeable and may have some negative effects. There are also conditions like mystenia gravis, turmor and stroke which may cause drooping eye lids. Stye, chalazion and meibomian gland dysfunction may also project the view of drooping lids although everything goes back to normal once treatment is completed.

Effects of Drooping Eyelids

One major response of patients in response to having droopy lids is its affecting their beauty and appearance. Which is why the lot would opt for the surgical correction in extreme cases. Droopy lids also affect the amount of light that gets into the eye and tend to reduce visual acuity and visual field view.

Treatment

The condition is mostly treated by an ophthalmologist or a neurosurgeon especially in cases where it stems from innervation. In senile cause patient may only be advised and helped to alleviate discomfort. Should there be a need for surgical intervention the levator may be shorten to help bring the lid back into place. In cases where the underlying cause stem other condition then they would have to be treated to get rid of the drooping. Droopy lids may also cause Dry Eye as the lid do not perform as they ought to.

Conclusion

Our eyes are delicate and so needs to be cared and catered for at all time, hence it is pertinent that one reports any anomaly to their health practitioner as soon as possible to avoid further complications in the future.
