BBQ Sammies & Salad for #marketfriday

Recently in Discord, @princessj190 mentioned that she had plans to chill with some friends and eat barbecue, which prompted @dreemsteem to report that she'd recently had Korean Barbecue. All that talk about barbecue made me realize it had been quite some time since I'd had it, so I had to seek a remedy for that!

Since I currently am living in the countryside outside of a small town (population apx 3000), there are no barbecue places nearby. I'd probably have to drive for 30 minutes at full highway speed 60 mph (96.5 kph) to reach the nearest BBQ place that comes to mind. But, fortunately, my local market has a decent barbecue, prepackaged, in the meat case. It isn't as tasty as fresh BBQ from a restaurant, but it's acceptable and certainly more convenient!

The brand is Brookwood Farms, headquartered in Siler City, NC (US). It is sold in a one-pound (454g) plastic tub. According to the packaging, it is pit-cooked, and already has BBQ sauce mixed-in. It is a ready-to-eat and is quite good for a pre-packaged item. I find it quite satisfying straight out of the fridge without heating, but brief heating would be a simple thing for those who prefer such. I've had it several times in the past and was never disappointed, as their product is consistently good quality.

For anyone not familiar with the word "barbecue," you might know it in different languages around the world. It is any meat that is slow-cooked for a long time with a lower heat than might be used to prepare a quick meal. Barbecue is often cooked over a charcoal or wood fire, outdoors, and with a cover to retain the heat. Sometimes, it is done in a pit dug in the ground, with the fire lit in the bottom, the meat placed on a rack suspended slightly above, and the pit is covered with rocks or a piece of sheet metal, then sealed around the edges with dirt to keep the heat inside. Cooking times vary depending on the temperature of the fire and how the meat is cut, but an entire day is not uncommon, and some light the fire to cook all night long while they sleep. Because of the longer cooking-time over lower heat, the meat is tender (more so than rapidly cooked meat) and juicy.

Chicken is often cooked this way. In my part of the world, however, pork is the meat of choice. I've heard it said that beef is almost always used in Texas, though, and they don't count anything other than beef as true, bona-fide "barbecue." 😂

My brother told me that Texas beef barbecue is usually sliced, but in the southeastern US, barbecue pork is often "pulled" (from the bone) into stringy pieces and subsequently chopped with a meat cleaver. Regardless of what meat is used or the method to prepare it, it is often placed on a plate with side items such as baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, and many other favorites. Barbecue sandwiches are common, too, with sauce and a pickle. While on a business trip to eastern North Carolina one time, a barbecue restaurant I visited featured a "Carolina Barbecue Sandwich" on their menu that had pulled pork and cole slaw between the buns!

It is also interesting to note that as one travels through the southeastern US as I have, the sauce that is used with barbecue varies from region-to-region. I distinctly remember different sauces being used in western North Carolina as opposed to eastern North Carolina. South Carolinians have their own recipe, as does Memphis (Tennessee) and other places. Some sauces are vinegar-based, some are tomato-based, some are mustard-based, and all have varying balances of tanginess -versus- sweetness, as well as different viscosity (thickness).

When I bought the barbecue this week, I bought some soft, drool-worthy brioche rolls and made barbecue sandwiches. Instead of the traditional side dishes, I opted to visit the salad bar of my local market. I got a container and filled it with wild greens, cherry tomatoes, onions, roasted red pepper, sliced zucchini (called "courgette" in some parts of the world), sliced yellow squash, nuts, raisins, bacon crumbles, and fresh fruit. I got enough salad to feed me for three meals, and it was a wonderful accompaniment to the BBQ sammies!

Do you have barbecue, or something similar, in your area? How do you prepare it? What sauces do you prefer? Let the #marketfriday folks know!

 😊

Now I feel like a bbq😅

Here, driving anywhere for about half hour is like normal - more so because we are stuck in traffic … just thinking

Right? Me too! It is 2:30 in the morning and I am eating a tootsie roll, thinking of BBQ.

Here, driving is at least a half-hour, but, usually more. I can get somewhere faster by walking.

Right? :) But, it has its tradeoffs! I go to all the cool concerts, get free entertainment and I can get a pizza at 3am, walk or bike to most places and uber knows where I live.

Ha!

Oh my God I should mute you! I ran out of them and here you are parading them in front of me! I just posted and now I have to go finish the market Fridays. I need to make an effort to post as often as I can, but no more than once a day. I used to post twice a day, because that is what everybody was telling me to do but I found that I cannot Ford to keep voting the same person, especially if they're posting two and three times a day. I would run out of power. I need to get a handle on how I felt because I am always low. Now I need to go to the store and get more Tootsie Rolls. Thanks a lot. You know I have fomo. I'll see you in the comment section.

Hahahahhahahahahhahaa

But didn't you already mute me??? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I sometimes post twice a day too but that's because I do one for myself and one for DreemPort at times... I think that's ok though ..when you're leading challenges and stuff...

I think people.usually spend their vote on my personal posts and skip the DreemPort stuff hahaha

So ..my computer died while I was trying to post!!! It was FULL OF BATTERY!!! I didn't even bring my cord

So now my post is gonna be ugly 😩

Oh well...at least the winners will know who they are lol

BBQ! Yes, please! Stand outside and I'll pick you up on my way by there! We'll hit up one of those almost local places. I am not sure if I have a preference. I grew up in the Northeast and BBQ meant it was on a grill. :) I love all BBQ and having lived in North Carolina for about a year and a half, there was plenty to be had. Pinehurst? Near Fayetteville. I am not sure what kind they have there, but, I want to say it was vinegar-based. I loved it in Texas and yes, it is true. The beef was king, although they would give you a chicken if you insisted.

I have never had the premade ones, but, given how far you live and the number of mouths you feed, it is a great idea. I will say that sometimes, I make some and freeze the leftovers, especially I nobody wants to eat them again. I like the idea from the salad bar! I would never have thought of that. When I think about it, I like a BBQ that has a little bite to it and is a tiny bit sweet. So sweet with a bite! But, I am up for any of it! Brioche bun! Bonus, baby! I'm in!

Thank you so much for taking me along! I had fun!! #MarketFriday has evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is normal for where you live? These are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I can only hope this to be true.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
  3. Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated)
    5. Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
  5. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. If you don't and someone reads it, there is nothing to tie #MarketFriday to that post.
  6. Please only one post each week. Believe it not, I run out of voting power if you put in many more than that.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Don't know if it's just me but I sometimes feel like leftover barbecue porks tests better after a long night in the fridge 🤔 plus it doesn't hurt that it comes In handy for that quick meal when you need to move fast, still waiting for the day our precious barbecue makes its way to the breakfast tables "barbecued pork and tea" 🥰

You are absolutely right! I think it has a lot to do with the flavors being able to marry up with each other and you know what they say? The flavors that play together, Stay Together. Or something like that but I have to agree with you! I think my pork BBQ tastes better overnight myself!!

Who knew right?

i don't even know how to mute people/?? which makes me scared that someday i'm gonna bump it hahahaha

i had to FOLLOW three people again last week cuz something was wonky! and i always feel bad that people don't know that i NEVER unfollow anyone. hahaha

i'll just ignore them if they annoy me hahahaha but i never unfollow LOLOL

so warning - if you get an unfollow by me - message me right back and say "hey jerk - you unfollowed me" and we will both bust up laughing and i;ll follow you back hahahaha

That's the thing. If you need somebody you can't message them. Way to take that back if they mute you you can't message them. The unfollow button is there another button on my phone and I have unfollow people on mistake and I can see it if I'm paying attention. You get a little pop-up message that says you unfollowed whoever. If I don't see it I get a nastygram because the person knows I did it mistakenly. I have no idea why the buttons are so close but it's a real pain in the you-know-what.

oh man - the saltiness of the fries... hahahaha i want it all right now!!!!!!!!!

and yes - we did have bbq for our family, even though we were in the northeast too - but that's cuz my family's cooking roots came from the south hahahahaha

I love coleslaw right on the sandwich, it is like heaven! Do you know what I am having for dinner tonight? Yes! That! I was wanting it last night, now, I am rewarding myself for waiting for the right time.

Oh, how lucky with Southern Roots. Mine is Pennsylvania Dutch and French. A strange combination for sure, but, the food is so good. The French side always.

I have been in the same position with trying out the various places for different BBQ and I do love it all, but, hello! Texas is where I ate the most of it. I guess it helped that I lived there the longest of anywhere as a grownup, but, the Washington, DC area is coming in a close second.

I loved Rudy's out there and Cooper's BBQ If you ever get there, try them! You won't regret it! I am having a great weekend! I hope you are too!

PS... What are you having for dinner?

i'm dying for more bbq now hahahaha

its only 1:28 here though - so i haven't even thought about dinner LOL i have so much to do before thinking about dinner LOL and i've given myself a little break today before rushing to it - and now i'm like... hmmm don't let any more time go by hahahahahaha

but i want to keep talking about bbq and yummy food ROFLLLLLLLLLLLl

ok - i'll start no later than 2 pm ;) that gives me 31 more minutes to have fun hehehehe

enjoy that dinner - oh yes! i love pulled pork sammies with coleslaw RIGHT on it!!!!! YES YES YES! EAT IT UP!!!!! :) and eat your first bite and then hold your bun up and say "THIS FIRST BITE IS FOR YOU DREEMIE!!" hahahahahahahahahahah

Omg @dreemsteem, I can find your comment! So I just started off at the beginning. I did not mute you too silly girl oh, but I thought I did. It's not terrible to post two or three times a day. I know a lot of people to do, but because I am just posting for myself I find that I do better if I just post once. I actually don't have time to post more than that right now and even though I have 2 tags, I don't post everyday in Market Friday. You have another place to post so that makes sense to do two.

@dswigle @dreemsteem @princessj190 ~ I have discovered that I am not the only creature in the house that likes BBQ. I made the last BBQ sandwich last night and ate it. There was a little BBQ left in the container so I decided to see if the cat might enjoy it (I'm still looking after one of my sister-in-law's cats.) OMG, he went wild over it! I split it into two servings for him, just in case he didn't like it none would be wasted. But he cleaned his little bowl in no time! Looks like I will have to buy another container soon, for him if not for me! 😂

Ha! Don't you just love a down-home Kit Kat? @thekittygirl

Who knew?

I think that is so cool that the cat likes BBQ! Does he usually have table food or cat food? Do you know what your sister-in-law feeds him? I am still laughing at the thoughts of it. My cat liked Bourbon and ginger ale, believe it or not, and it wasn't mine, but, it wasn't fed to her either! She would sneak over and begin drinking it like she was dehydrated. (She wasn't!)

I have no idea what made her even try for that, we don't allow them to get up and free feed. I love it and I hope you grab a picture someday for #Caturday! Wouldn't that be fun? Oh, yes! I would say you have another fan! :)

He usually eats cat food. Occasionally, I will buy a chicken breast in the Deli "food to go" section of my local market and share some of it with him. He gets half-n-half to drink sometimes in a little bowl, and he loves to drink the juice from a can of black olives! But other than that, it's usually just cat food, but he seems happy with it. I buy ABOUND™ natural cat food, as that is what my sister-in-law was buying for him, and it is a healthier blend that most of the cat food in the stores. I switch between the natural Chicken and Salmon blends and he loves it!

I really ought to just start saying "my cat" because he has been here under my care almost as long as he was with my sister-in-law. She took him in when his original rescuer became terminally ill. My sister-in-law is in a place now that only allows one cat, which is how I ended up with this fellow. He's an older cat, like me, at 16-ish years old and his energies meld well with mine. I don't see her being able to take him back anytime soon, and he will be here two years this coming January. He has actually been featured in many of my #caturday posts, so he is already well known on Hive!

OMG, Bourbon & Ginger Ale...? Your cat has good taste, no doubt! That is hilarious! 😂

Black olive juice! We are a match made in heaven! I love black olives! Ginger ale and Bourbon... and only the good stuff. Seriously. Sniffs the cheap stuff and meows. I need to take a video of it. Hilarious!

Well, off to make a Sunday post. I always post so late. :( I cannot get my shiza together!

Have a great night, my friend! Happy Halloween! In all fairness, I was taking care of the ghosts and goblins!

Good thing you're handy in the kitchen and don't have to drive to another city to fill a craving.

Barbecuing is huge where we live. I don't like the barbecue pre-cooked on my food (it's always too sweet & too much) and prefer when a "dry rub" is used instead.

You have not lived till you try all the different types of barbecued meats. Speaking of which, I had my first "Carolina Barbecue Sandwich" in Gatlinburg TN about 15 years ago. Delicious! Did you taste it yet? @thekittygirl

Your post made me hungry!
