I'm home from shopping and I like to organize all of my produce in large containers so I can see what I have. It is much easier for me to plan out my meals when I know what I have. It's all about the refrigerator check. What have you got in your refrigerator? Refrigerator check!

Getting my cart and putting a strategy for getting in and out of the market. I have memorized what is on which aisle, but, every once in a while, they mix it up, just to keep me on my toes, or more likely, to make me search the store just so I can see what I missed.
This week is a week of basic necessities. Fruit, vegetables and perhaps some meat. I am doing the needful. How many people like to shop for food? I have to be honest. I really don't. I like to eat and I don't mind cooking, but, if it isn't in my garden, I would rather go to the produce stands, where they grow it and sell their goods directly to you, selecting the yummy goodness of the fresh from the farm food, but seems like I am waiting for some of the crops to be ready, so it seems like I am always making the fifty-yard dash through the grocery stores. Just to be done with it. Can I be the only one that feels this way?
Growing my own would solve it all, but, time doesn't allow for me to work a large plot that is needed to cover all my needs. I have small areas with berries, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, cucumbers, eggplant, and radishes.
Are you vegan? I'm so sorry!!! May I suggest that we close our eyes and run through this section!?? Hold hands now and let's make a dash for it! One, two, three... go!
There are benches all over the store to give you a place to sit down if you want/need to. The aisles are ginormous and can fit two motorized wheelchairs in the smame aisle and still have leftover room.

I have always loved potatoes. Baked, mashed, fried, scalloped boiled and in a cassarole.

It's a beautiful market and as I can see your big refrigerator fully loaded. I love to see outside market as it's very clean and well placed things compare to our country. Here still lockdown going on so can't visit many places. We generally buys vegetables and fruits on Saturday which enough for whole week.
Especially closer to the bigger cities, the US Markets have always been pretty orderly and clean. There are farmers' markets that are somewhat similar to yours, but, usually smaller and many of them. They would be shut down by the health department if it wasn't kept clean. The regulations are stricter, that is all.
There is a huge population to feed over there and the amounts needed to satisfy this need mean there needs to be a lot of food. Vendors sell without permits, so they are on the fringe and that is where it starts to get a little messy.
I don't fault them. They need to make a living to support their family. It is a hard situation to keep order in those markets. I have to say that some of them are so huge, it gave me a moment of pause. :)
We are not on lockdown, but, places are still closed, but are looking at reopening on June 11. It varies from State to State.

LOL. The last of my fresh fruit/veg in here is one apple. There is some cut up and cooked sweet potato in one of the yogurt tubs, beside the cut up and cooked chicken in a gelato tub, because I am going to make a pot pie with it but I don't have the spoons to do it all at once so I prepped those in advance.
Other than that, milk, leftover mac n cheese in the pot, actual yogurt, ginger ale, tortillas, cheese in the tupperware with a knife for cutting it on top. And then of course the stuff in the door. :)
I love to make pot pies! I usually put everything in one container in the freezer. I'm so lazy. :)) Plus, yes... okay, I am just that lazy.
I like saving and using the little leftovers. Truth be told, I don't like having leftovers forever, but, I frequently make two dinners at once, like macaroni and cheese and macaroni salad for the next day. More creative than that, but, you get the idea.
I was losing food in my refrigerator, one of the reasons I switched over to the see-through containers. I just saved them from purchases of grapes and other large produce. I found it kept the produce better too, for some reason.

I was gonna ask, because they looked like reused salad and whatnot containers to me. Hey, you're saving them from the trash too! The losing food part is why I only buy a little fresh fruit and veg at a time. I am one person with an irregular eating habit, so if I bought large packs of anything it would likely go bad. I'll grab a couple of apples or a couple of sweet potatoes or some such unless I'm doing a specific recipe, or I might do a large amount of citrus to juice it. But even if I'm walking through thinking everything looks good, I generally will choose one fruit and one veg and that's it because six different fruits is still too much. XD
Absolutely. I still have 4 in the family, so I need larger amounts. The plastic containers come from BJ or Costco and usually contain grapes or kiwi or something in bulk. If I had to buy them, I wouldn't. I have moved back over to pyrex for storing and gave away the Tupperware and Rubbermaid.
But, I get it. I only buy what I need for the week or ten days. I like it fresh. I reuse those plastic things over and over, as was meant to be, not a throwaway. What are they thinking?
I do make it ahead and why not? I love easy meals and I even went to Michaels and bought individual pie tins, that way, I can make everyone's just the way they like it. Then I put their initials on the pastry crust so I can identify them. If I have lots of things, I make extra pies and put them in the freezer for a lazy meal. :))
I don't blame you for the one fruit and one veggie. Waste not, want not.
And what's so extra infuriating is that that they aren't recycled. They'll have the number on them, and people will put them in the recycle bin and rinse them out all proper, but recycling facilities almost everywhere do not have the right equipment to actually recycle them, so it's just a show. I think at this point we need drastic action re: the plastic pollution. Like laws mandating cradle to grave packaging. Bring back returnable glass bottles and unpackaged produce. If a manufacturer wants to use crappy packaging, then there needs to be a bin to collect it at the store and it is shipped right back to them, preferably onto their CEO's lawn. ;)
Individual pie tins is SUCH a good idea when you have a family with different needs and wants. That would make it so much easier for allergies or if someone is vegetarian and another isn't, etc.
We have one of the few that actually does collect them and recycle them. A few years ago, they wouldn't recycle GLASS! What? I have to say that most of the stores here (with the exception of BJ and Costco and Sam's do sell unpackaged goods. They are very antiplastic here. But, there are still some in the bakery and the butchers unless you have them cut it for you. Then they will use butcher paper.
I buy my milk in recyclable glass bottles or from the farmer close enough to me (he delivers! No lie!) and I see them letting the world go to Hell before they do anything about anything. It takes away from their profit. Guess what, when there is no world left, will the profit really matter?
The pie tins are even good for you! Then you can make a few of them and freeze - pull out for an easy night!
Ooh Denver didn't recycle glass either until really recently! They would take it, of course - but in the single stream system, it was the last thing to come out and it would be broken and they couldn't recycle it like that. They would "reuse" it once as LANDFILL LINER, which to be fair prevented some rock mining I guess but still, glass is infinitely recyclable and it was going in a landfill! I don't know what they did to fix it but when I mentioned on a post online that that was the case, Denver Recycles actually replied to me all huffy that that was old news and they recycled glass now. I was like, well then you need to tell people that? LOL
I try to avoid plastic as much as possible but it's not always possible. And now since covid, even the one place I could bring my containers for some bulk things has prebagged them. Thankfully most stores offer at least a lot of unpackaged produce; but Trader Joe's is notoriously awful about that. SO MUCH PLASTIC. And their whole schtick is organic crunchy granola no GMO type stuff - and they're covering it with plastic. I'm like Y'ALL.

I do generally make a big batch (like, a whole pot pie) and then freeze some of it for later, both to prevent waste and to make more variety in my diet by spreading it out. But I'll also eat the same thing for days at a time. I also tend to get on a kick where I want the same thing a lot - I'll have a soup kick or a pasta kick or a burrito kick or whatever, for weeks - and then I'm satisfied and move on. X3

😂 - I agree. My friend and I have put together the doings to put our shopping through the cash till, then remove all the packaging and put the goods in recyclable containers or paper wraps and leave the packaging at the store. It mainly involves having two sets of shopping bags, a little purse with scissors and other implements to get into packaging, and a sanguine but determined attitude.
On the one hand, I love that because stores do have the power to tell manufacturers, "We're not going to carry your product until the packaging doesn't suck." On the other, if it's a chain store and the store manager tries to tell corporate that customers are fed up and doing that now, will they even listen?

I think there is a move and, ironically, COVID has hastened it, as more people are questioning the whole consumption thing, whether it's from a "can I afford it now I've been furloughed/lost my job/the economy has tanked and taxes are coming" to "actually, why am I doing this anyway?"
Yep. I've seen a lot of talk from people who were able to work from home going "do you know how much better my life has been not having to go to the office? I save time, money, energy... "

I do love shopping for food these days. I didn’t used to, especially when I went to the store without a plan. But now I eat more vegetables than ever before snd try to have a list of specific ingredients for specific dishes, and that makes all difference.

Yes!!! I usually know my menus before I go shopping. Less waste and less time trying to figure out what I need! Exactly. I used to have moments of: What am I going to do with these anchovies and okra? You know what I mean. Now, I have a plan for it when I buy it.
It is easier to shop now as I do eat better. Better = more vegetables and those need to be fresh. Most of what I buy is on the perimeter of the store.
The refrigerator stays organized or I lose food to waste. If I cannot see it getting older, I might miss using it. It works for me, but, most people don't like being so OCD, and my sisters make fun of me. All in jest! Thank you for stopping by and have a great weekend!

That is a lot of apples and there isn't an apple that I wouldn't try at least once! I love fresh fruit and vegetables and when you can't grow your own, most of these are bought locally, so they are pretty good. Their organic section is huge and there isn't a growing season in the area in the winter except for hothouse... so, this is one of the better bets once I run out of my canned goods.
The answer is to can more.

Canning?!!! Don't you want to do a canning post Denise? It is probably the one thing I haven't tried in all my homesteading ventures. Making jam and marmalade yes (groan) but not preserving veggies. I use my dehydrator to do "sundried" veggies - love the tomatoes like that. But we never have cans of anything

Well, they aren't cans, but, called canning. In jars just like jam and marmalade, but, larger, putting up green beans and beets, carrots, etc. I have had a dehydrator for probably 20 years and we love it. I agree, sundried veggies are awesome, especially the tomatoes and peppers. I do both for different things.
Surprisingly, people have found different ways of representing #MarketFriday. I did take a couple of months off during COVID (I put #MarketFriday on vacation) and just recently came back, one of the reasons it is a little quieter. Most people continued to post, but, after almost 4 years, I needed to take a few weeks off.
When the time comes, I may make a post on it. I never think about that. Thanks for being part of the challenge!

It is easier for me to keep track of what needs to be used. It gets messy, but, a few minutes, and it is all reorganized again. I have less waste and keeps me on top of my food.
Everything has a place, that is how. Plus, I have another refrigerator. It has bulk things in there. How has life been going? Now I need to go check you out.

Most of the Commissaries are pretty large, but there are fewer of them than there used to be. In the DC area, we have five, which is a lot of them, but, there is a lot of military around here. See how empty?? Shocking. Still.
I have to keep it organized and everything in its place. That way, I can keep track of what I need to use and what I need to shop for also. Don't worry, it drives my sisters crazy. :))

The same grocery store. It is my go-to, not even because it is closest. Ft. Meyers, right next to Arlington Cemetery is closer, but this one is bigger. I have five of them to choose from around here.
I am waiting for my Farmer's Market to open, one of them anyway, but, this season has been kind of weird. Spring in February, then a few cold days to kill the plants, then summer, then spring. We will be lucky to get any veggies this year. Supplementing from the grocery stores is not only the only way to go in the winter, but hopefully, they will be better than last year. Some of the farmers sold directly to the local markets during COVID.
This year has got to be better! I am awaiting the glory! I know it is right around the corner!

At the beginning of covid, instead of going grocery shopping one main time a week with a couple of other whim pickups in-between, I only went once every three weeks for a power buy. After a couple of months I went in one day and they had changed things around, making it hard for me to get in and get out as fast as possible. I thought it should be against some kind of law to change the grocery stores around during covid. LOL....
Like always, what I thought didn't help anything ! ha
Yes!!! Exactly! I have no idea what they were thinking after I had memorized their store. Especially during COVID. The manager said he did it to make it easier for people, targeting items that were used frequently. No kidding. Thanks a lot, you just made my life more difficult.
It should be against the law or he should be fined heavily. I can't believe they didn't read those thoughts... Perhaps they should have asked Alexa what you think? To think that we all put those listening devices in our house AND paid for them.

That's like the covid vaccine have nano chips where we are all tagged now if we got the vaccine. We know better though, those of us who carry cell phones,we are already "chipped" by our phone possession. :) We volunteer all the time !
I have Alexa and her little dots all over the house. She has free reign to hear all of my secrets. :)) And I love her. She is helpful in the kitchen and plays sweet tunes to me. What is not to love?

Wow!!! Denise, I love your refrigerator !!!! I need to learn how you put it together and such an order !!!! ha ha ha I remember this riddle))) I imagined what the face of the robber was))) I also love potatoes. I read about it that potatoes are not useful because of the starch in the composition and something else. I think that this is not entirely correct. I was surprised that people without masks in the store 😮 In Israel, if a person does not have a mask, then he is not allowed to enter the store. stunningly beautiful flower!

The picture you see is before the pandemic. I was not allowed to take pictures in there since the pandemic. We are mandated to wear a mask, although the CDC announced yesterday that anyone who has had the shots, does not have to wear masks anymore. I am not sure how they will prove who had the shots and not. It is a ridiculous way to try to get back to normal. There will be plenty of people that haven't had them that will just not wear a mask.
I have to find another site for the riddles. :)) I have used so many, I have forgotten. Perhaps I must find a different diversion.
The refrigerator is done to keep my using what needs to be used first. I can see everything and it is easier for me to use what I can put my eyes on. I don't believe what they say about potatoes either. I have eaten them my whole life. Too much of anything is not good. Even things that are "good" for you. Thank you, it was in the store.

in Israel they were allowed to be without masks only on the street. In the premises, masks are required. who made the vaccine, we have a document - a green passport. so you can prove that you were vaccinated. I am glad that in your country there is a conversation about removing masks. this means that the situation is improving. Take care of yourself!!!
Thank you! You too! The talk is that those who are vaccinated can be without masks, but, my worry is the variant. Supposedly the Pfizer and Moderna make it less likely for the virus to become bad, but, of course, we will all know as time goes on.

I like shopping for food. I however have not been back inside a store. I have a mountain of returnables that will help to fund my future retirement, but I havent broken down and taken them in yet. If and when we get to a herd immunity level I will venture back but for now, I will suffice with doing the needful via curbside.
That works and especially if you feel unsafe, then absolutely. I have never done curbside, but, I think it is a good idea for people who like it. I take all the precautions and do the returns. I keep as much normal as I can, but, I will say that I take 110% of the precautions.
For a while, they weren't returning anything, but, they have dropped that long ago.
I cannot tell you why I don't like shopping. I like farmers' markets, but, grocery stores, not so much.

I love the way you arrange your fridge. We have ours arranged similarly. When buying fruits and veggies, I usually don´t use any plastic bags in the store (unless I buy some really small items like baby mushrooms or something), I just put everything in the cart, then into my own bag at the cash deck, take it home and then arrange the stuff neatly in the fridge in transparent plastic containers that I use over and over again, just like you :)
Thank you! That is awesome! I don't put anything in plastic bags unless I have to, and yes, having your own grocery bags saves bringing any more trash home. My stores also have paper, but, why? I can save on that too.
People don't get that you can use them over and over. I will say that I have been doing this for years and years and there is definitely less waste or overbuying when I can see what I have. I still have a family that I cook for, so my refrigerator is always full unless I go shopping every day.

There are actually a lot of people who are moving (finally) towards that way. When the supermarkets prepackage things (like the big box stores) it is hard to get around, but, I never shop there, so it doesn't affect me. The merchandise is not as nice as the other stores, but, people on a budget are trying to afford to live.
It does destroy our planet and so, I willingly give up something if I had to for a world that is worth passing on to my children, and their children, and their children. Do people not get that?
