Market Friday and Boarding a Horse

avatar
(Edited)

This week we will look at the world of horses. Boarding them in particular. When you live in a place that doesn't have enough room to keep your horses, you naturally start looking for alternatives.

He was bought at the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction which is held yearly. The auction has two purposes: it helps control the size of the herd, keeping it a sustainable size. There are generally about 60 plus foals born on Assateague Island, which is over on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Second, it is used as a fundraiser for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. The firemen use some of the funds to care for the ponies throughout the year, vaccinating and throwing bales of hay if it is a harsh winter.

Henry: almost four months old

There was a time I had to go back to school, moving was inevitable and so we entered the world of boarding the horses. I actually didn't think it would happen and the silver lining, if there could be one is the move was stateside instead of somewhere else in the world. Because these pictures were taken at different times in his life, some were taken by my kids and some by me. We like to keep it in the family.

ist barn.jpg

You can usually choose one of two ways to board your horse. Full boarding, where you pay someone to groom, feed, and do all the care for your horse. They provide the feed and hay and exercise and you come and jump on your horse and ride.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see different markets and cultures of our friends here on Hive.

bathing.jpg

Then there is partial boarding, which means that the owner of the horse is responsible for most, and sometimes all of the work. The barn just gives you shelter. Like renting a room. Typically, the owner is responsible for providing their own hay and feed, feeding their horse, and mucking the stall.

Bathing. Because who doesn't love a clean horse? Those all fall under partial. Floating their teeth, which they file or rasp their teeth to make the chewing surfaces moderately flat or smooth. A horse's upper jaw is congenitally wider than its lower jaw, so if it is not done, their teeth will wear unevenly, making it harder to chew. Normally, wild horses don't need their teeth floated as their foraging keeps this all in check. But, when they are being domesticated like he is, they lose that ability. To be fair, he is an easy keep. I give him a handful of grain only to make him feel like he is getting something. In the wild, they forage for food in the salty marshlands, and their staple food is marsh grasses, seaweed, and whatever green plant there is.

ferrier and firest timee 2.jpg

Then, of course, the Ferrier to shoe the horses. Henry is lucky. As a wild horse, his breed doesn't need to be shoes, but, rather just kept in check with a nice file job. This was his first-ever manicure. The partial board pays their own and makes their appointments, checking to see if it is convenient to the barn.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: A King was traveling to a neighboring kingdom when he suddenly became ill. He had two sons, and they came to visit the King in this neighboring kingdom before he died.

On his deathbed, he promises his kingdom and all its treasures to whichever son owned the horse that is the LAST to return to their home kingdom.

The king dies and the two sons are left to wander on the outskirts of town trying to be the last one to return home.

After days of not accomplishing anything, they seek advice from a Wiseman. After counseling with the Wiseman, they immediately saddle-up and race for home.

What did the Wiseman tell them?

source

Answer! Can you guess??? The Wise man told them to swap horses. This way, they would want to get the horse that his brother "owned" home first.!!

The facilities are great here. Cross Country jumps and even water jumps. You have to sign up to get the use of the facilities. Lessons are available to learn something new. I would say that most people that ride English (that I know of) will show their horse, so having good trainers available is a plus. Or you can bring your own, with permission. Insurance reasons and all.

They have everything that a good equestrian facility needs.

running.jpg

With horse care costs rising and incomes shrinking, there are many horse owners worrying about the expense of boarding, while the facilities are looking for ways to reduce costs. So they have what they call cooperative boarding, where you pitching with the chores and they reduce your board. They usually have a calendar and you sign up for chores, like mucking stalls every weekend or feeding in the evenings. They tally the chores or points and your board is reduced by that much. It is a win-win situation for everyone.

I hope you enjoyed a little bit the world of boarding. Who knows, if you have an empty stall, it may be for you! :) Another different market of sorts. It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! center>

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

A great and beautiful passion. Horses are wonderful animals that intimidate me when I'm close to them. Because I never had it close, as a child.
Your passion can be seen in every sentence and every photo. I understand that it is expensive to have a horse, especially in city conditions. I admire you that you can develop this passion, both for yourself and, especially, for your children.

I didn't always live close to the city, and pretty soon, I may move further out. You know, only a thought. I grew up around horses, my aunt and uncle were both trainers and were very thoughtful to show all of us kids the world of horses. It is expensive to have a horse, but, most of the time with them was spent in my own barns or friends that had extra room.

My mom was always afraid of horses, which I didn't know until I was an adult. She said the sheer size of them intimidated her. I don't like kickers, and thank God none of ours do, but, I have seen some that do and it isn't pretty. The last place I want to be is in a stall with a kicker.

Yikes.

Thanks, Dan! @bluemoon I appreciate you stopping by and leaving your words!

It is obvious that you have been close to horses since childhood, that you love them and you are used to them.
I was really wondering if you abandoned the intention to move, to buy another house.

I am not too sad. I am not ready to move. I really like where I live and it suits my needs. Of course, if the unrest continues, I may change my thoughts on that.

The move is definitely off. No transfers for now, for who knows how long.

That is okay, I usually try to allow for fate to win and don't try to go against it. :)

I was never a horsey person. When I was 19 my girlfriend had a horse and it kicked me whenever she wasn't looking!

No way!! What a little stinker! I am not sure I would care for horses either. As a matter of fact, I used to help someone out with their horses, right up until on cornered me in the stall, and kicked me! It didn't want to come in from the pasture. I had no idea that the horse's temperament was so hot!

Love horses but you really need to be in the right place to own one they are definitely more expense not that you can take them for a walk in the park like a dog. Henry looks like a pretty clam beautiful natured horse.

That Henry is a likely looking colt.

I'm a strictly Western type of rider. In fact, I'm basically cowboy taught.

Over the years I've had friends that owned (and mostly boarded) horses. I never see them unless there is a 'less than vet grade' problem. I do know how to file clean and trim hooves. When I was a kid we almost never shod our horses. Maybe once a year in the fall for roundup. Maybe.

My dad had a fancy mare (half quarter half thoroughbred) that had split a hoof (caught in a roll of barbed wire) that had to be carefully tended her whole life. He'd gotten her for near nothing because of the hoof but she dropped a couple of great foals and was an honest to god 5 gated horse. In spite of the hoof she was his favorite, and he rode her lots. The stud colt she dropped was a blanketed Appaloosa. He turned out to be real popular for the guy that bought him.

Thanks for a great post about something most of us never think about. I do have to say that a couple of those horses are living in fancier digs than I do...

Henry is such a spunky little guy! He makes good company with the others and I agree that many people take on full boarding if they don't have to pay much for it (much being relative in my book)Most of the people I know go for full board, but, what is the fun in owning a horse if the only involvement is riding when you have time? You miss out on one of the best bonding experiences ever! Shoeing is expensive so I am glad the one is made for that.

In San Antonio, where I lived for a short time, Retama Park was a race track and when a real winner came up lame, they sold them for breeding. Oh, the good blood that came out of some of them. I adore riding a 5 gaited horse! I love that wonky 5th gait! I know just how your dad feels. He probably took good care of her and she knew he favored her. You know how animals are. They can feel it. That sixth sense and all.

I still have the house and barns that you first saw them in, but, it is not right here, so I board right now. Here was the gang when Henry was younger. It was sent to me by a neighbor that saw them running like a herd. :) Thanks for stopping by. You always leave such awesome comments!

Previously? They were at the ShoreHouse, in Texas the barn was right there...Two of them were even in North Carolina for a while! Here, where I am now, they were at my friends for a short while and they have been in a self-care facility. Like renting a room, but, it was so close, I could walk. The cost is more than I want, but, one of the girls started showing and so we needed better facilities.

I live in a gated community that does not have allowances for horses, barns, or the like. It's against the HOA! However, we all get our fresh eggs from the farmer who lives not too far from here! LOL

Sometimes in life, we have to make compromises we didn't think we would have to. Have a great day!

HOAs don't allow much of anything ! I rarely ever say never about things, because by this time I have done many things I said I'd never do snicker..... but.... My brother lives in a place with an HOA and you can't even put a kiddie pool in your yard for the grands for a few hours, even if you were going to dump it and take it up immediately when done. What ?? Too many rules and I don't ever think I would pay for a a place to live (like owning it, not renting).... where there were THAT many rules.

I do understand some of the horse type things with space and all that..... but for real, time to sell and move to the ranch....LOL

The HOA here isn't too bad, I can even have a hottub if I want. A shed, but, alas, no barn. Well, I do have a nice place over at the shore that is being renovated (again) but, the reason he isn't over there is I don't live there full time. So that is a problem. Although, he was born over there and spent much time there. I am still tied to here for now, but, you know. Here today, moved tomorrow... :)

I would never want to live in a place with that strict of an HOA. Most are not that way and to be honest, I don't mind this one. Many places don't allow horses, nothing to do with land, just city ordinances. LOL

Beautiful post and photos Denise! Henry is a handsome fellow! I've never owned a horse but I did save one once..I was at a friends farm that had horses and the horse was having trouble getting up because it had laid down too close to a drain. I pointed it out to my friend and it took two guys to help the horse up and he (my friend..lol) told me that I probably saved the horse as its stomach would have gotten twisted. Happened a long time ago but I still remember that..for now anyway..lol. 😊 💕 This is a my #marketfriday post: https://hive.blog/hive-196308/@deerjay/market-friday-shopping-for-alpine-asters

Thank you so much! We call him Henry Houdini because ever since he was small, he was an escape artist. When he was young, I would find him in another one of the other horses pastures... He got lonely as he was raised in a herd of wild horses and didn't want to be alone. My neighbor had a goat named Niki Marie and she loved Henry and kept him company. I didn't know goat and horses were used to keep each other company. LOL

I hope all is well in the birdhouse and you are really enjoying the time with your grandson! Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, leaving your words behind!

I believe you. You are American, after all!! I can honestly say you probably had an awesome childhood, and there is a lot to be said being raised with horses. We are showing, but, not as much as a year or so ago. A lot of training and riding goes into it and I just don't have the time right now. And neither do the kids.

I love barrel racing and two of the horses ride Western and English, but Henry is all about the fun. And barrel racing is fun. He also likes the precision of jumping and English.

Oh yes the old boy is well cared for. Some might call it spoiled LOL. Cant say I am not a bit jelly lol. I mean free room and board with plenty of attention, what a life! I never paid board. I had the um pleasure of taking care of them all by my lonesome self and it wasnt even really "mine" pfft. I enjoy watching other people's pasture ornaments LOL...it costs less this way!

Well, I am forced to pay board for a bit, but, it won't be long before they all get their own place again. Of course, I can't keep trailing them back and forth to the shore, so, for reasons I won't go into that here, but, boarding them is the best option right now.

They wish they were lawn ornaments. We still show, so you know they get worked out. :) You don't realize how much time we spend with our ornaments, shining them up.

Thank you very much for your nice comment and generosity. I used to ride a horse by the seaside as a kid. They used to have retired horses from the race working along the seaside. The staff just walked the horses with kids sitting on horses’ backs.
It would be nice to be able to communicate with horses!

Final photo with horsing around tells a story of joy, perhaps telling you the wiseman said to share not swap horses.

Your dinky little chap is a heart stealer, Oh the joys of a pony and open field to ride, sharing secrets when cleaning their "bedroom" or nibbling together on a little grain.

Life can only be better sharing it with four legged friends, wishing you a wonderful day and keep smiling Denise, it is contagious.

Although I love seeing horses, I am afraid of being alone around them. I went riding but never by myself. For some reason I can`t explain, I am afraid of horses.

I actually do not think that that is unusual at all. My mom loved horses and she was down at the barn all the time however she was absolutely petrified of them if they came up to her pyramid. I think it's just the absolute size of them and knowing that they are powerful. That and some of them can be quite skittish so that's all at the back of my mom's mind I'm sure it's on yours too. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your words behind. It's always fun to see you.

I had no idea about boarding for horses, I am a city gal. Thank you, I learned something new. I dont’t know... If I had a horse, I would want him close to me. No boarding. 🤪

That is true! All of them have followed us all over! And lived with us, however, the job called for a different location, one in which horses are not part of the property, but boarded, so... as much as I don't like it, it has worked out okay except its a drain on the $$!

Sometimes life throws you a curve and I have just learned how to catch better.

I agree! No boarding is so much better!

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

I can see that handsome Henry definitely is a loved member of the family! How old is he now?
Owning a horse is something I longed for since I was a little girl and still hope to do one day. Never met a horse I did not like!🐎

It was enjoyable to see your awesome photos and learn what's involved with boarding a horse in this creative Market Friday post! @dswigle
