Exact Fit Fail

Hi fellow Ranters,

Today I had a fail with the brake job I recently tried to do with the little man.

Exact Fit Fail

One of the things that’s good and important from a repair standpoint is to have parts and shops that are reliable for giving you things that fit your car. This is especially true when it comes to brakes!!

When the little man and I were working on brakes for the car I noticed that some of the stuff wasn’t at all an “exact fit”. I tried to adapt to the situation and see what would happen but it wasn’t going to work. The various parts weren’t the right size as annoying as that is!

I highlighted here the offender. The brakes on the car are a pain in the ass in the first place but they include these spring clips that keep the brakes in place. I get the purpose but shit did I hate the execution of it lol. The clips are supposed to end flush with the base of it. You can see here the clip extended out a few millimeters and that meant nails on a chalk board sound when you’re driving. It was insane how loud the brakes were because this piece of metal was scraping against the steel rotor. I knew I had to go back and fix it before I tried to drive it otherwise something worse could break. Not good but thankfully something I was able to take care of.

The original one from Subaru is obviously a perfect fit, it doesn’t protrude into the brake rotor so it operates smoothly and nicely. I originally was going to throw these away before driving the car since I’ve got enough junk but I decided to give it a drive since it was a pain in the ass to do the work. Thankfully I did! I would’ve been dumpster diving to get them back lol

The rotors themselves were also not a perfect match. This car is proving to be a real pain in the ass right now lol.

I spent the time taking the old ones off and all that only to put it on the ground. One of the things you absolutely have to do when doing any repairs, I’ve learned over time, is put the old versus the new to check sizes. This saves you from having to spend the time putting everything back on only to find out that it’s not going to fit. As you can see the new rotor is a few millimeters wider than the original and that’s not going to work. Was shitty to realize this but glad I did before I got too far in the job lol.

I’m going to complain to them on their portal. I love the parts store that I go to, they always have good stuff but maybe Subaru just isn’t a well supported brand with them which is tough. Back to the web to figure out what other people are buying for this stuff! But of a pain in the ass but better than another failed brake repair job lol.

What’s your repair job fail? Let me know!

I must say, I hate working on brakes, specially on the drum brakes of my classic VW, all that dirt, and when parts don't fit it is just worse!!

Ah drum brakes are the worst! Lol. I hate those damn springs, they take so long to get on and off properly!

I've seen this community but have never used it. I'm sorry to see you're having problems with your car and parts.

My nephew had a Subaru a couple of years ago but have sold it as it was consuming too much.

It's amazing though that you are fixing your car yourself. Not many do that these days.

You’re welcome to use my community for whatever you want! :D I made it multipurpose so lots of different stuff can fit in here. Many use it for a good rant like this one lol. They advertise exact fit but it wasn’t an exact fit for sure!

The Subaru was a car I always dreamed of having. They are all wheel drive, not very expensive and had good quality. After owning one, I don’t mind the car but we won’t be buying another one is all I can say. Lots of small issues that add up! We bought it brand new too, so it’s not like we inherited someone’s screw ups.

Thanks for stopping by! :D
