Analog love: my experience with Lomography / Amor analógico: mi experiencia con la Lomografía

In an increasingly digital world, going back to analog is only done as they say: for the love of art, and it requires effort and money, but sometimes it is the price you have to pay to experience different things in life.

En un mundo cada vez más digital, volver a lo analógico sólo se hace como se dice por ahí: por amor al arte, y requiere esfuerzo y dinero, pero a veces es el precio que hay que pagar para experimentar cosas diferentes en la vida.

Although in my childhood I knew and still have two simple roll film or reel cameras (which I have not used for years), like many I put analog photography aside when I was able to buy a digital camera long after they were released.

Aunque en mi infancia conocí y aún tengo dos cámaras sencillas de rollo de película o carrete (que no uso hace años), como muchos dejé a un lado la fotografía analógica cuando pude comprar una cámara digital tiempo después de que salieran al mercado.

Those of us who like to capture images, undoubtedly technology allowed us to save money, take hundreds of shots, erase the ones we don't like, edit, etc., without having to worry that we ran out of film or how much the development of the images will cost us, and now with the cameras integrated into the cell phones, many people don't even think of buying a separate one to take their pictures.

I had also forgotten about that until a while ago, surfing the Internet and looking at photography things, I found out through an article about the existence of something called "Lomography", and what is that?

Well, it's an experimental, artistic photography movement, based on a compact, automatic Russian camera, the Lomo LC-A (Lomo Kompakt Automat) 35mm.

The design of the Lomo LC-A was inspired by the Japanese mini camera Cosina CX-1 and became its competition, millions were sold around the world, especially in the countries that made up the socialist bloc (Soviet Union, China, Bulgaria , Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, German Democratic Republic, Poland, Yugoslavia, Albania, North Korea, Mongolia, North Vietnam and Cuba).

The Lomography brand has released several models of cameras, built almost entirely of plastic, which makes them look like toys. Apart from its peculiar history, what attracted me the most about Lomography was when I saw the photos that were obtained with these cameras. I fell in love! the images had effects that seemed incredible that could be achieved with a simple click.

Aparte de su peculiar historia, lo que más me atrajo de la Lomografía fue cuando vi las fotos que se obtenían con estas cámaras. ¡Quedé enamorada! las imágenes tenían unos efectos que parecía increíble que se pudiesen lograr con un simple click.

I immediately found out where they could be purchased and I found the official website: lomography.com, I went to the Store section and I really liked a fuchsia camera called Diana F+ Mr. Pink, and it was the one I bought along with a box with three rolls of color film.

The interior of the Diana F+ Mr. Pink / El interior de la Diana F+ Mr. Pink

This camera created in 2006 also has its history, it turns out that it is inspired by one that came out in Hong Kong in the early 1960s, made by a company called Great Wall Plastics Factory. It was super cheap, it cost $ 0.99 USD and almost all plastic, except for some metal parts and it used 120 film, a format that was very popular in Asia at that time. A few years later, in the mid-1970s, it was discontinued due to the rise of 35mm photography and Instamatics, made by Kodak.

One of the things that most caught my attention about the Diana F+ was that it used 120 film, something I had never seen before, the roll is longer and thinner and allows you to obtain 12 or 16 photos depending on the format you choose.

Although the camera is easy to use, I had lost practice placing a film, so the truth is, I had to read the instructions well to be able to use for the first time this precious tool.

The part of developing the photos was an adventure also because I couldn't find any place that processed 120 films, finally after several days I found one.

I would have liked to do the development and copying of the images myself, but I didn't know anyone who would allow me to do that. I remember that in the university, in the Chair of Photography I had the opportunity to do it and it really is a magical process.

After this experience, I bought two lenses to continue taking different shots with my camera, although until now I have not used them because currently it is very difficult to find where to develop the photos and it is very expensive.

For me, whether with Lomography cameras or not, analog photography has its charm, that uncertainty of not knowing how your images turned out until the moment of developing them, so I will continue to use them from time to time.
