PHOTO SERIES - GET STAPLED!

THE INSPIRATION

Selecting staples as subject matter to photograph never entered my thoughts. I was walking along a street I frequent often and stopped dead in my tracks at the sight of wooden utility poles texturized by staples. I had to walk up close, study them, and run my hands over them to feel the texture. I’m sure passersby thought I was just another weirdo seeing some strange vision they did not share.😆

THE SHOOT

I didn’t have my camera with me at the time, so I went back another day to photograph them. There were approximately four different utility poles, with several years of staples embedded in them and holes where others had previously staked a claim. The utility poles are located where the sidewalk is narrow and packed with people moving in both directions. These photos were taken in February 2020, just prior to when people became terrified of each other.

When I was shooting these images, I had to constantly move out of the way of people brushing up against me and nudging me every which way. I also had to be careful I wasn’t accidentally pushed out into traffic, that’s how many people there were. It’s now cemented in my memory that I captured not only images, but also the experience of being in such tight quarters with people who were completely fearless of being in contact with each other.

Initially, these images brought to mind insects and also birds. Now, I am reminded of people and life before.

omg I find this amazing but gives me anxiety at the same time lmao

So funny u stopped dead and that u prob looked like a weirdo to some passersby lol I wouldn't mind either of course! :D

These shots indeed remind me of insects, not of birds tho, I see them like some kind of industrial ants... the last photo is the one that "disturbs" me the most :D

Awesome post!! :D 💙

LOL, I think I know what you mean. 😄

I literally did just stop dead and got shoved a bit as people went by. I pay no mind to what people think because I'm too focused on what I'm doing when being creative.

Industrial ants is a very good description. I like that. For me, it's only the last photo that makes me think of birds, a cloud of them taking off in flight, as if seen from a distance. Now, I have to ask @ailindigo, because I'm curious, what is it about the last photo that you find "disturbs"?

Thank you for checking out my post and your comments! 😄

Yeah I see it now, I would say it's many ravens taking off in flight (bc of the industrial/dark aspect of it) lol

And damn, dunno, it's a bit hard to stand, the overall texture of the many staples, it's like a lighter trypophobia lol

u welcomeeeee 😝

Ravens, I like that. They are one of my favourite bird friends.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to learn something new. I had no idea what trypophobia was. Now that I've taken a look into it, I see what you mean and I agree. I will also add that I have a fascination with such things. 🤣

So sick... I am always drawn to odd stuff like this when taking photos 😂Isn't it intriguing to imagine what all the things these staples once displayed were? And how old the oldest one might be?

Thank you! Oh yes, I see you have a similar vision. Delightful! Yes, odd stuff, things that go not noticed and so on. Yes, very much intriguing to imagine about them.

I studied them closely and it looks like some were there so long they became embedded in the staples, since it's multiple layers built up in several areas. From what I could ascertain, I would say that at least 10 - 15 years, as my guess. What would have been displayed would be all kinds of different things (1000's), depending on what was going on at whatever point in time. 🤔

i was sure that photos are fresh, because there is no paper so i thought that people just gave up on putting things there because there are no shit ton of people walking by.

The photos are just over a year in freshness testing 😜

There is a "post no bills"😉 rule for hydro poles, so notices are put up and ripped down repeatedly, for years. Notices are still being put up and there are still people out, but I have not been in that particular area since I took those photos. There would be much less walking by now though.

You're right, there are a lot of associations. It's a Tamron 90mm. I've had it for some time and I agree, it's a good lens that's treated me well.

Thank you!
