Here's an Insect for this #butterflyday by @whatisnew

Although they may look like small bees or wasps, Hover flies are true flies.

They get their name because they are often seen hovering in the air like a helicopter, then darting a short distance, and then hovering again.

These insects are beneficial. They are valuable in the garden in the fight against aphids.

Hover flies are nearly as effective as ladybugs and lacewings at controlling aphids.

@melinda010100 I do not think we have hover flys here but sure could use them. In the spring aphids are terrible, I have gotten where I just let them do there thing then the plant grows back.

I have not paid any attention to them until I took these photos and tried to identify what kind of bee it was! I will pay attention next year to see if I see them again.

Nice photos of the little critters! Are they like hummingbird moths in their movements? I don't think I've seen one of those around the gardens here.

... No insects in the gardens today, though!

I must admit that I have only noticed them when they have landed on the flowers like this one. I'm pretty sure that I have always mistaken them for a bee.
